On Track by Canada. Railway Safety Act Review Committee Pdf

Presents the report of a committee established to review the impact of the federal Railway Safety Act on the safety of: the construction or alteration of railway works; the operation and maintenance of railway works and equipment; non-railway operations affecting railway safety; and the administration and enforcement of rail regulation. In its review, the committee heard presentations and reviewed submissions from railway companies, unions, interest groups, and private citizens, with full consideration to work already carried out on the effect of the Act by Transport Canada and by previous review commissions. Sections of the report cover the evolution of railway regulation from 1867 to the current Act; the state of railway safety and safety trends; the roles and responsibilities of railways in safety management; the legislative framework governing railway safety; the roles and responsibilities of government regulators; issues related to grade crossing safety, environmental protection and safety, and substance use and abuse among railway workers; provincially regulated railways and provincial approaches to railway regulation; railway safety in the future, in view of advanced railway technologies; and recommendations for reform. Includes glossary.

Rail Safety by Sharon Niel Pdf

The Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) rail-safety oversight framework relies on inspections to ensure railroads comply with federal safety regulations. FRA inspects railroad infrastructure and operations, identifies safety defects, and may, if warranted, cite the railroads for violations of federal safety regulations. This book examines the overall framework that FRA, the states, and the railroads use to ensure rail safety; the extent to which FRA and the railroads assess safety risks and allocate resources to address those risks; and what challenges, if any, exist to FRA's current safety framework, and what ongoing and emerging issues FRA faces.

Reliability and Safety in Railway by Xavier Perpinya Pdf

In railway applications, performance studies are fundamental to increase the lifetime of railway systems. One of their main goals is verifying whether their working conditions are reliable and safety. This task not only takes into account the analysis of the whole traction chain, but also requires ensuring that the railway infrastructure is properly working. Therefore, several tests for detecting any dysfunctions on their proper operation have been developed. This book covers this topic, introducing the reader to railway traction fundamentals, providing some ideas on safety and reliability issues, and experimental approaches to detect any of these dysfunctions. The objective of the book is to serve as a valuable reference for students, educators, scientists, faculty members, researchers, and engineers.

Rail Transportation by Joseph A. Christoff Pdf

In 1980, the Staggers Rail Act fostered substantial changes in the railroad industry. By 1995, fewer large freight railroads accounted for most of the industry's revenue and train miles. At the same time, these freight railroads substantially reduced their workforce and track networks. Congress and railroad labor have raised concerns that these changes in the industry could compromise safety. This report provides information on operational and safety trends in the railroad industry and describes how the Federal Railroad Admin. has responded to these trends by developing a new partnering approach for improving safety on the nation's rail lines.

Railway Safety, Reliability, and Security: Technologies and Systems Engineering by Flammini, Francesco Pdf

Human errors, as well as deliberate sabotage, pose a considerable danger to passengers riding on the modern railways and have created disastrous consequences. To protect civilians against both intentional and unintentional threats, rail transportation has become increasingly automated. Railway Safety, Reliability, and Security: Technologies and Systems Engineering provides engineering students and professionals with a collection of state-of-the-art methodological and technological notions to support the development and certification of ‘real-time safety-critical’ railway control systems, as well as the protection of rail transportation infrastructures.

The Economics of Railroad Safety by Ian Savage Pdf

The American public has a fascination with railroad wrecks that goes back a long way. One hundred years ago, staged railroad accidents were popular events. At the Iowa State fair in 1896, 89,000 people paid $20 each, at current prices, to see two trains, throttles wide open, collide with each other. "Head-on Joe" Connolly made a business out of "cornfield meets" holding seventy-three events in thirty-six years. Picture books of train wrecks do good business presumably because a train wreck can guarantee a spectacular destruction of property without the messy loss of life associated with aircraft accidents. A "train wreck" has also entered the popular vocabulary in a most unusual way. When political manoeuvering leads to failure to pass the federal budget, and a shutdown is likely of government services, this is widely called a "train wreck. " In business and team sports, bumbling and lack of coordination leading to a spectacular and public failure to perform is also called "causing a train wreck. " A person or organization who is disorganized may be labelled a "train wreck. " It is therefore not surprising that the public perception of the safety of railroads centers on images of twisted metal and burning tank cars, and a general feeling that these events occur quite often. After a series of railroad accidents, such as occurred in the winter of 1996 or the summer of 1997, there are inevitable calls that government "should do something.
