The One World Schoolhouse by Salman Khan Pdf

A free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere: this is the goal of the Khan Academy, a passion project that grew from an ex-engineer and hedge funder's online tutoring sessions with his niece, who was struggling with algebra, into a worldwide phenomenon. Today millions of students, parents, and teachers use the Khan Academy's free videos and software, which have expanded to encompass nearly every conceivable subject; and Academy techniques are being employed with exciting results in a growing number of classrooms around the globe. Like many innovators, Khan rethinks existing assumptions and imagines what education could be if freed from them. And his core idea-liberating teachers from lecturing and state-mandated calendars and opening up class time for truly human interaction-has become his life's passion. Schools seek his advice about connecting to students in a digital age, and people of all ages and backgrounds flock to the site to utilize this fresh approach to learning. In The One World Schoolhouse, Khan presents his radical vision for the future of education, as well as his own remarkable story, for the first time. In these pages, you will discover, among other things: How both students and teachers are being bound by a broken top-down model invented in Prussia two centuries ago Why technology will make classrooms more human and teachers more important How and why we can afford to pay educators the same as other professionals/DIV How we can bring creativity and true human interactivity back to learning/DIV Why we should be very optimistic about the future of learning. Parents and politicians routinely bemoan the state of our education system. Statistics suggest we've fallen behind the rest of the world in literacy, math, and sciences. With a shrewd reading of history, Khan explains how this crisis presented itself, and why a return to "mastery learning," abandoned in the twentieth century and ingeniously revived by tools like the Khan Academy, could offer the best opportunity to level the playing field, and to give all of our children a world-class education now. More than just a solution, The One World Schoolhouse serves as a call for free, universal, global education, and an explanation of how Khan's simple yet revolutionary thinking can help achieve this inspiring goal.

Salman Khan by Devapriya Sanyal Pdf

A name that's synonymous with packed theatres shouting his name and crowds of young men cheering for him, Salman Khan has been reigning in the popular imagination for three decades now. However, superstardom came with its share of troubles. Salman has found himself in the news once too often, almost as though he were controversy's favourite child. Endlessly discussed as well as criticised, he is an object of adulation, fantasy and reverence in the cultural space. Tabloid pieces, stories and gossip-all tend to collapse him into a formula, making him lose his exclusivity when he is one of a kind. Salman Khan: The Man, The Actor, The Legend offers new perspectives on cinema and the peculiar glow of this star's superstardom in a consumerist society. It cuts through the many layers of his personality, the gossip and the rumours to focus on the star's aesthetic formulation-on what exactly it is about film and television, the star system and the capitalistic society that make him such a huge icon. It looks into Salman Khan, the phenomenon, in-depth, considering there have been fewer enquiries dedicated to charting his stardom than some of his contemporaries. A fascinating account of one of Bollywood's towering figures, this is a candid portrait of Salman Khan-the man and the superstar-and what makes this legend thrive across generations.

Quicklet on The Charlie Rose Show: Salman Khan by David Corrick Pdf

ABOUT THE BOOK Although I was a young child in the late 1960s and early 1970s, I was a huge fan of the sketch comedy television program Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. A recurring spoof on the program was the presentation of “The Flying Fickle Finger of Fate Award.” The award was bestowed upon the famous and infamous in recognition of various “achievements” which the recipients would just as soon forget. In Salman Khan’s case, he has been touched by the type of fate which is inspirational, remarkable, and may very well prove to benefit countless generations to come. In viewing Mr. Khan’s May 5, 2011, interview on Charlie Rose, I was vividly reminded of the fact that as careful and meticulous as we may be in planning our future, the unforeseen and the unforeseeable can circumvent our plans in an instant, changing our lives forever. None among us could have predicted the circumstances and experiences we would encounter over the course of the past year, the past week, or even the past day. Clearly then, we are incapable of predicting future events. To me, that lack of predictability provides hope through difficult times and engenders gratitude during times of ease and prosperity. Another overall theme that struck me during the interview is that sometimes opportunity presents itself in disguise. We may start out on a simple path, not really expecting the path to lead very far, but then that path can inexplicably widen until it becomes a five-lane highway. Mr. Khan was simply trying to help a cousin with her homework when the “flying fickle finger of fate” intervened and transformed him from a Harvard-trained hedge fund analyst into a global “accidental educator.” MEET THE AUTHOR David Corrick has a BA in psychology, an MS in counseling psychology, and a JD from UOP-McGeorge School of Law. He has worked as both a law review writer and an editor while in law school. He graduated from law school in 1994, with distinction. He was also admitted into the Roger J. Traynor Honor Society based on his academic record. David is a Bay Area native; born and raised in the Oakland/Berkeley area. He went to Sacramento for law school, and has recently returned to the Bay Area. David plays baseball in an adult league in Sacramento. He enjoys working-out, traveling, and attending performing arts events. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Little did Salman Khan know when he started tutoring a cousin in math in 2004 that his generosity of spirit would lead him to become a global innovator in education and would gain him the respect of luminaries such as Bill Gates. Mr. Khan’s improbable journey is only in its beginning stages. His vision and efforts could very well revolutionize the way education is delivered and people learn throughout the world - a revolution no less startling than the advent of the microchip. Salman Khan is a Bengali-American born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1977 to immigrant parents. He is the founder, chairman, and lone faculty member of Khan Academy, an online computer resource which provides brief tutorials on a laundry list of subjects, ranging from algebra, to American civics, to SAT preparation. The tutorials have been translated into seven languages and have been viewed over 100,000,000 times. At present, Khan Academy, which is headquartered in Mountain View, California, offers approximately 2,800 tutorial lessons, freely accessible to all. Mr. Khan was working as a hedge fund analyst in Boston when he began tutoring his cousin, Nadia. His successful tutelage of Nadia led to other family members seeking his academic assistance, and he willingly obliged. Despite his initial resistance, in 2006, a friend convinced Mr. Khan that it would be more efficient to videotape tutorials and post them on YouTube. Buy a copy to keep reading!

Asha Parekh The Hit Girl by Khalid Mohamed Pdf

Asha Parekh was to the movies born. Ever since she was knee-high, she faced the camera as a child artiste, while performing simultaneously at dance fetes. An alumnus of Bombay’s The J. B. Petit Girls’ High School, she devoted after-school hours to learning classical dance from exacting gurus. Given a break as a leading lady by Filmalaya Studio’s Sashadhar Mukherjee, she debuted opposite Shammi Kapoor in the romantic entertainer Dil Deke Dekho. Instantaneously, the audience and the critics agreed: “A star is born.” Followed a concatenation of silver and golden jubilee hits, which established her as the quintessential Hit Girl. Possessed of all the requisites of the cinema of the 1960s and the ’70s – felicity at instinctive acting, intricate dance skills and the ability to invest conviction into the roles of zestful, glamour-exuding film heroines – she made an impact, too, with parts demanding gravitas. Apart from films in Hindi, she has also acted in films in Gujarati, Punjabi and a film in Kannada. The Mumbai film trade, to date, acknowledges her as one of the heroines with the highest number of successes. Her innumerable dance ballets on stage have earned her untold acclaim, at home and overseas. Among her other facets, she has been involved since decades in running a charitable hospital. She was Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (1998-2001) and has been associated with the Cine and TV Artistes’ Associations and other organisations dedicated to the welfare of film industry workers, technicians and actors. She turned producer and director with several top TRP-rated TV serials like ‘Kora Kagaz’ and ‘Palash ke Phool’ and programmes like ‘Baaje Paayal’. Currently she has chosen to retire from acting, but adds, “Never say never.” She lives by the famed Juhu shoreline in Mumbai.

A Guide to Convolutional Neural Networks for Computer Vision by Salman Khan,Hossein Rahmani,Syed Afaq Ali Shah,Mohammed Bennamoun Pdf

Computer vision has become increasingly important and effective in recent years due to its wide-ranging applications in areas as diverse as smart surveillance and monitoring, health and medicine, sports and recreation, robotics, drones, and self-driving cars. Visual recognition tasks, such as image classification, localization, and detection, are the core building blocks of many of these applications, and recent developments in Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have led to outstanding performance in these state-of-the-art visual recognition tasks and systems. As a result, CNNs now form the crux of deep learning algorithms in computer vision. This self-contained guide will benefit those who seek to both understand the theory behind CNNs and to gain hands-on experience on the application of CNNs in computer vision. It provides a comprehensive introduction to CNNs starting with the essential concepts behind neural networks: training, regularization, and optimization of CNNs. The book also discusses a wide range of loss functions, network layers, and popular CNN architectures, reviews the different techniques for the evaluation of CNNs, and presents some popular CNN tools and libraries that are commonly used in computer vision. Further, this text describes and discusses case studies that are related to the application of CNN in computer vision, including image classification, object detection, semantic segmentation, scene understanding, and image generation. This book is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students, as no prior background knowledge in the field is required to follow the material, as well as new researchers, developers, engineers, and practitioners who are interested in gaining a quick understanding of CNN models.

Indian Film Stars by Michael Lawrence Pdf

Indian Film Stars offers original insights and important reappraisals of film stardom in India from the early talkie era of the 1930s to the contemporary period of global blockbusters. The collection represents a substantial intervention to our understanding of the development of film star cultures in India during the 20th and 21st centuries. The contributors seek to inspire and inform further inquiries into the histories of film stardom-the industrial construction and promotion of star personalities, the actual labouring and imagined lifestyles of professional stars, the stars' relationship to specific aesthetic cinematic conventions (such as frontality and song-dance) and production technologies (such as the play-back system and post-synchronization), and audiences' investment in and devotion to specific star bodies-across the country's multiple centres of film production and across the overlapping (and increasingly international) zones of the films' distribution and reception. The star images, star bodies and star careers discussed are examined in relation to a wide range of issues, including the negotiation and contestation of tradition and modernity, the embodiment and articulation of both Indian and non-Indian values and vogues; the representation of gender and sexuality, of race and ethnicity, and of cosmopolitan mobility and transnational migration; innovations and conventions in performance style; the construction and transformation of public persona; the star's association with film studios and the mainstream media; the star's relationship with historical, political and cultural change and memory; and the star's meaning and value for specific (including marginalised) sectors of the audience.
