Modern Korea: All That Matters by Andrew Salmon Pdf
In no nation on earth has history accelerated with such speed as in Korea. A medieval dynasty at the end of the 19th century, it underwent a traumatic colonization, then, in its hour of liberation was divided by the great powers at the end of World War II. Devastated by a fratricidal war, the peninsula has remained divided ever since. South Korea is the greatest national success story of the 20th century. From the ashes of war, it transformed itself, against the odds - and against much advice - into an industrial powerhouse and thriving democracy. Now a high-tech wonderland, it is undergoing social and cultural transformations that add further layers to its dynamic DNA. North Korea is an economic, social and political disaster, successful only at totalitarianism. Having transmogrified from a blood-and-iron communist dictatorship into a bizarre, neo-fascist monarchy, it is a black hole at the heart of Asia. Engulfed by paranoia, the regime presides over a malnourished populace, a 1.1 million man army and a nuclear arsenal. From nuclear missiles to Samsung smartphones; from assassins to salarymen; from Kim Il-sung to Psy; this is the extraordinary story of the flashpoint peninsula that dominates talk in boardrooms and newsrooms. Korea, the author argues, provides two stark benchmarks for national development: Epic success and catastrophic failure. And its final chapter has yet to be written.
The history of salmon worldwide is not a happy one; overfishing and habitat loss have destroyed the once-great Atlantic runs and severely damaged those of North American's west coast. Only in Alaska have management regimes and habitat protections safeguarded the fish that so many depend upon--so far. Alaskans know that to face the challenges ahead we need to recognize our shared dependence and responsibility. We need to know one another's stories and to question what it will take to maintain salmon runs, ecological health, and the place of salmon in our lives. Made of Salmon brings together over fifty diverse Alaskan voices to celebrate the fish that holds a central place in the lives, cultures, and values of those who depend on salmon for food, livelihoods, recreation, and a sense of community. The longer works by some of Alaska's finest writers thoughtfully and artfully explore the significance of salmon in the lives of Alaskans. The shorter, more anecdotal works add their writers' own "salmon love" to the mix. Photographer Clark James Mishler visually captures Alaskans fishing for, catching, preserving, and eating salmon from Southeast to Bristol Bay and points between and beyond. This book is an effort to bring heart-and-mind stories from every corner of our salmon-loving state into a conversation that will delight and energize readers everywhere.

In a triumph of marketing, the Tasmanian salmon industry has for decades succeeded in presenting itself as world’s best practice and its product as healthy and clean, grown in environmentally pristine conditions. What could be more appealing than the idea of Atlantic salmon sustainably harvested in some of the world’s purest waters? But what are we eating when we eat Tasmanian salmon? Richard Flanagan’s exposé of the salmon farming industry in Tasmania is chilling. In the way that Rachel Carson took on the pesticide industry in her ground-breaking book Silent Spring, Flanagan tears open an industry that is as secretive as its practices are destructive and its product disturbing. From the burning forests of the Amazon to the petrochemicals you aren’t told about to the endangered species being pushed to extinction you don’t know about; from synthetically pink-dyed flesh to seal bombs . . . If you care about what you eat, if you care about the environment, this is a book you need to read. Toxic is set to become a landmark book of the twenty-first century.
At present fishing for salmon in Norwegian home water is carried out with drift nets, bag nets, bend nets, lift nets and stake nets in the sea, and mainly by rods in the rivers. Catch statistics have been collected since 1876, but reliability of the statistics is questionable. The rates of exploitation on many Norwegian salmon stocks are very high, and data are presented and discussed for River Laerdal, River Eira and River Imsa stocks. As a result of this heavy exploitation with nets, the frequency of net-marked salmon entering rivers is high especially for griIse, although most net-marked salmon are only slightly damaged. It is suggested that mortality of salmon that are net-damaged hear or in brackish water is relatively small compared with salmon that escape from nets on the high seas. Some possible effects of selective fishing are also discussed. 159 Status of Exploitation of Atlantic Salmon in Norway REFERENCES Anon. (l985a) Salmon and sea trout fisheries 1984.
