American Trade Unionism (Classic Reprint) by George M. Janes Pdf

Excerpt from American Trade Unionism HE aim of this little book is to present as clearly as possible within the space allowed the salient features of American trade-unionism. Like all social movements which excite the hopes and fears of men, trade-unionism has more often been the oh ject of passionate denunciation or defense than of scientific inquiry. But whether we like it or not the organized labor movement in some form has evidently come to stay. There are no labor problems in a backward country like Turkey, where repression and not expression is the rule. The trade-union movement is at least an expression of life and a desire for some thing better on the part of the laborer, and that is one reason among others why it is found in advanced industrial countries like England and the United States. Differences of opinion concerning most sub jects are usually the result of ignorance, and definite knowledge concerning any subject is at least the beginning Of wisdom. The Lesson of Black Friday by Gerald Gould Pdf

Excerpt from The Lesson of Black Friday: A Note on Trade Union Structure I have attempted in the following pages to make clear two things (i) the actual technical structural weakness of the trade union movement at the present moment, which is obviously a question of pure fact and unrelated to our judgment of whether the aim of trade unionism is good or bad and (2) the under lying assumption oi present - day trade union activity. The Peculiar Sanity of War by Celia Malone Kingsbury Pdf

During wartime, paranoia, gossip, and rumor become accepted forms of behavior and dominant literary tropes. The Peculiar Sanity of War examines the impact of war hysteria on definitions of sanity and on standards of behavior during World War I. Drawing upon Joseph Conrad's comprehensive understanding of war's impact on soldiers and civilians alike, and extending Michel Foucault's construction of madness and reason, Kingsbury expands the definition of war neurosis to include peculiar sanity at home as well as on the front lines. While other investigations of World War I consider shell shock to be the only definable war madness, Kingsbury is the first to build a powerful argument around the insanity of the home front's vilification of the enemy. Ultimately, Kingsbury's study establishes peculiar sanity, among civilians and soldiers, as an inevitable response to war's madness. The Peculiar Sanity of War begins by locating the roots of war mania in Edwardian hypocrisy, then moves on to examine the way propaganda operates in nontraditional texts, such as housekeeping guides, and in the novels of Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, H. G. Wells, Rebecca West, Edith Wharton, Willa Cather, Rudyard Kipling, Virginia Woolf, and H. D. Celia Kingsbury's eloquent and moving book . . . brings together war and madness in unexpected ways. Beginning with a phrase from Joseph Conrad, she diagnoses the condition of a culture gone awry, a 'peculiar sanity.' . . . --from Laurence Davies's foreword

Hardhats, Hippies, and Hawks by Penny W. Lewis Pdf

In the popular imagination, opposition to the Vietnam War was driven largely by college students and elite intellectuals, while supposedly reactionary blue-collar workers largely supported the war effort. In Hardhats, Hippies, and Hawks, Penny Lewis challenges this collective memory of class polarization. Through close readings of archival documents, popular culture, and media accounts at the time, she offers a more accurate "counter-memory" of a diverse, cross-class opposition to the war in Southeast Asia that included the labor movement, working-class students, soldiers and veterans, and Black Power, civil rights, and Chicano activists. Lewis investigates why the image of antiwar class division gained such traction at the time and has maintained such a hold on popular memory since. Identifying the primarily middle-class culture of the early antiwar movement, she traces how the class interests of its first organizers were reflected in its subsequent forms. The founding narratives of class-based political behavior, Lewis shows, were amplified in the late 1960s and early 1970s because the working class, in particular, lacked a voice in the public sphere, a problem that only increased in the subsequent period, even as working-class opposition to the war grew. By exposing as false the popular image of conservative workers and liberal elites separated by an unbridgeable gulf, Lewis suggests that shared political attitudes and actions are, in fact, possible between these two groups.

In Defence of October Leon Trotsky’s work In Defence of October is the title of a speech delivered to a meeting of Social Democratic students in Copenhagen advancing the cause of the Russian Revolution. Stalinism and Bolshevism By contrast, in Stalinism and Bolshevism Trotsky examines the revolution’s bureaucratic degeneration which finally resulted in the Stalinist antithesis of the democratic workers’ state.
