Whistler to Cassatt by Timothy J. Standring Pdf

A revelatory look at an underexplored chapter of American art, which took place not on American soil but in France In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American artists flocked to France in search of instruction, critical acclaim, and patronage. Some, including James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and Mary Cassatt, became highly regarded in the French press, advancing their careers on both sides of the Atlantic. Others, notably William Merritt Chase, John Twachtman, Childe Hassam, and Thomas Wilmer Dewing--part of the association known as The Ten--found success working in the style of the French Impressionists, while Henry Ossawa Tanner, Cecilia Beaux, and Elizabeth Jane Gardner focused on genre and history subjects. This richly illustrated volume offers a sophisticated examination of cultural and aesthetic exchange as it highlights many figures, including artists of color and women, who were left out of previous histories. Celebrated scholars from both American and French institutions detail the complex history and diverse styles of these expatriate artists--styles ranging from conservative academic modes to Tonalism--and provide original perspectives on this fertile period of creativity, expanding our understanding of what constitutes American art.

Americans in Florence by Francesca Bardazzi,Carlo Sisi Pdf

"The relationship American impressionist painters had with Italy, particularly with Florence, was very intense between the mid nineteenth century and the start of the twentieth. After the Civil War, hundreds of painters came to Italy. Florence, Venice and Rome had by long tradition been the centre of the Grand Tour and were places made legendary by those who wanted to know and study the art of the past, while also exercising a powerful fascination because of their climate, landscape, atmosphere and people. The catalogue features painters who, though not explicitly adhering to the new impressionist language, were fundamental examples for the younger generations, including Winslow Homer, William Morris Hunt, John La Farge and Tomas Eakins. They were followed by great precursors such as John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who could lay claim to considerable cosmopolitanism. The heart of the book will consist of works by artists who stayed in Florence, among whom were some genuine exponents of the American impressionist group, the Ten American Painters (William Merrit Chase, John Henry Twachman, Frederick Childe Hassam), and by Franck Duveneck, who played a particularly important role in the relations between American and local artists, gathering a school around himself, the so-called 'Duveneck boys'. The link between the activity of the Americans in Florence and their compatriot intellectuals, collectors, writers and art critics will also be studied: Gertrude Stein, Mabel Dodge, Bernard Berenson, the brothers Henry and William James, Egisto Fabbri and his family, Mabel Hooper La Farge, Bancel La Farge, Charles Loeser and Edith Wharton."--Publisher's website.

Critical Voices by Meaghan Clarke Pdf

Critical Voices is a fascinating account of women writing about art in Britain at the turn of the twentieth century. Meaghan Clarke employs extensive original research in order to demonstrate the significant contribution made by women to the art world and draws on a diversity of sources, including diaries, letters and periodicals, to highlight the many different forms their criticism took. Focusing in particular on the work of three women - Alice Meynell, Florence Fenwick-Miller and Elizabeth Robins Pennell - Clarke argues that in order to understand fully art debates of the time it is essential we broaden our understanding of the role of women in the construction of art history. John Singer Sargent, James MacNeill Whistler, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Elizabeth Butler, William Holman Hunt, Frederic Leighton, Walter Sickert, Henrietta Rae, and Rosa Bonheur are among the artists considered.
