Saturday Is for Funerals by Unity Dow,Max Essex Pdf

In the year 2000 the World Health Organization estimated that 85 percent of fifteen-year-olds in Botswana would eventually die of AIDS. In Saturday Is for Funerals we learn why that won't happen. Unity Dow and Max Essex tell the true story of lives ravaged by AIDSÑof orphans, bereaved parents, and widows; of families who devote most Saturdays to the burial of relatives and friends. We witness the actions of community leaders, medical professionals, research scientists, and educators of all types to see how an unprecedented epidemic of death and destruction is being stopped in its tracks. This book describes how a country responded in a time of crisis. In the true-life stories of loss and quiet heroism, activism and scientific initiatives, we learn of new techniques that dramatically reduce rates of transmission from mother to child, new therapies that can save lives of many infected with AIDS, and intricate knowledge about the spread of HIV, as well as issues of confidentiality, distributive justice, and human rights. The experiences of Botswana offer practical lessons along with the critical element of hope.

Do Funerals Matter? by William G. Hoy Pdf

Do Funerals Matter? is a creative interweaving of historical, sociocultural, and research-based perspectives on death rituals, drawing from myriad sources to create a picture of what death rituals have been; and where, especially in the Western world, they are going. The Classic Edition includes a new preface from the author reflecting on changes in the field since the book’s initial publication. Death educators, researchers, counselors, clergy, funeral-service professionals, and others will appreciate the book’s theory- and research-based approach to the ways in which different cultural groups memorialize their dead. They will also find clear clinical and practical applications in the author’s exploration of the five ritual anchors of death-related ceremonial practice and help for professionals counseling the bereaved surrounding funerals. Based on nearly four decades of research and teaching on funeral rites, this volume promises to fill an important gap in the cross-cultural literature on bereavement, while answering an important question for our generation: Do funerals matter?

The Thoughts and Happenings of Wilfred Price Purveyor of Superior Funerals by Wendy Jones Pdf

A historical fiction debut. “An old-fashioned story exploring first love, loyalty and loss—this diverting novel is pure pleasure” (The New York Times Book Review). Under the heady influence of a springtime picnic and vague notions of obligation, young undertaker Wilfred Price blurts out a marriage proposal to a woman he barely knows. Much to his consternation, she says yes. As Wilfred attempts to extricate himself from the situation, his betrothed’s overbearing father presents further complications. And when Wilfred meets another woman he does wish to marry, a comedy of manners ensues. Set in rural Wales during the 1920s, Wendy Jones’s charming first novel is a deceptive, subtly humorous entrance to the mores and social conventions of a world gone by. “A life-embracing novel.” —The Boston Globe “A skillfully drawn comedy of manners.” —The New Yorker “[Jones’] characters are delightfully drawn, lovingly described, and infused with life that transcends the printed page.” —World Literature Today “Wilfred’s sentimental education is wrought so delightfully and affectionately.” —Sunday Times “Light, compassionate drama about a small, very tightly bound, ancient corner of the world.” —The Guardian “This is a spryly told tale whose heart is an ample match for its more knowing qualities.” —Daily Mail “A comedy of errors in rural Wales evolves into a dark tale of family secrets in this very accomplished debut.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Four Funerals and Maybe a Wedding by Rhys Bowen Pdf

In the days leading up to her wedding to Darcy O'Mara, Lady Georgiana Rannoch takes on the responsibilities of a grand estate, but proving she can run a household just may be the death of her in the new Royal Spyness Mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service. If only Darcy and I had eloped! What I thought would be a simple wedding has been transformed into a grand affair, thanks to the attendance of the queen, who has offered up the princesses as bridesmaids. Silly me! I thought that withdrawing from the royal line of succession would simplify my life. But before Darcy and I tie the knot in front of queen and country, we have to find a place to live as man and wife... House hunting turns out to be a pretty grim affair. Just as we start to lose hope, my globetrotting godfather offers us his fully staffed country estate. Mistress of Eynsleigh I shall be! With Darcy off in parts unknown, I head to Eynsleigh alone, only to have my hopes dashed. The grounds are in disarray and the small staff is suspiciously incompetent. Not to mention the gas tap leak in my bedroom, which I can only imagine was an attempt on my life. Something rotten is afoot--and bringing the place up to snuff may put me six feet under before I even get a chance to walk down the aisle...

Returning Home Ain't Easy But It Sure Is a Blessing by Seestah Imahk S.,Seestah Imahküs Pdf

"Returning Home Ain't Easy But it Sure Is A Blessing" is a very moving and penetrating work that every African whether he or she intends on repatriating to Africa or not, should read. It is an "invaluable guide" to all Africans who are desperately trying to make their way back home. To re-locate is not a simple matter. It requires a determination to succeed, a firm faith in God the Almighty and patience to learn and re-learn. The power of this book prepares a plan for those wanting to return home to re-acquaint themselves with the land of their Afrikan ancestors. This book shows wisdom, extreme sensibility, and sense of humor necessary to help one to re-settle and make their home in Ghana or anywhere in Africa for that matter. The discourse also includes Ghanaian law as it relates to the subject of Dual Citizenship and The Right of Abode for Afrikans born in the Diaspora. This book can help those who may choose to walk the path of "Return", but should also be read by those who do not intend to re-locate as it is a book, which imparts valuable information about a country in Africa, one of the countries that many African-Americans repatriate to...Ghana. Her straightforward choice of words makes for an admirable, enjoyable, serious and commendable read.

In Taiwan, strippers are hired to entertain funeral guests throughout the ceremony. Undertakers for the Tongan royal family weren't allowed to use their hands for 100 days after preparing a king's body. In the late 1800s, New Englanders would gulp down a cocktail of water and their family member's ashes in order to keep them from returning as vampires. Jungle Blue by Otchere Darko Pdf

Jungle Blue tells a sad story about a man whose dreams and his destiny move in opposite directions. Born with unique physical challenges, he endeavours to overcome all the odds against him. He succeeds and becomes one of the greatest in his community. After that he sets himself a new and higher goal. Then something happens that casts a dense cloud over his future. A strange circumstance takes away his hope; or put in a less painful language, his hope and his future are put on hold for at least two years. This narration is a proxy account of Jungle Blue’s life given by his servant who has been deported to London for two years. During the two-year period, his servant will study for a qualification that will enable him to return to, and transform his community of origin. Even though, his servant will return after two years, his absence during that time is going to be difficult for him. While in London, his servant becomes the symbol of his master who epitomises the inhabitants of the community he hails from. Through this deported servant of Jungle Blue, the reader is presented with a description of two sets of people: the servant, his master and the community of origin of the two, as one set; and Londoners and the London community within which the servant proxy now lives, as the second set. This gives the novel a dual setting..... ‘the indigenous community of origin of Hope and his master’ and ‘the new community of London’ which is going to be the deportee’s new place of abode. This dual setting is intended to create the premises for effective comparison between two sets of people from two sets of communities with two systems of civilisation that are here and there interposed, juxtaposed and transposed throughout the various phases of the narration. Names of people and places used in the novel, including those of the indigenous communities and; and, also, including the new London community to which Hope is deported are all fictional. No names and no events in the novel relate to any real people and real situations. Any semblances to any real life situations should therefore be seen as merely coincidental and unintended.

Funerals in Africa by Michael Jindra,Joël Noret Pdf

Across Africa, funerals and events remembering the dead have become larger and even more numerous over the years. Whereas in the West death is normally a private and family affair, in Africa funerals are often the central life cycle event, unparalleled in cost and importance, for which families harness vast amounts of resources to host lavish events for multitudes of people with ramifications well beyond the event. Though officials may try to regulate them, the popularity of these events often makes such efforts fruitless, and the elites themselves spend tremendously on funerals. This volume brings together scholars who have conducted research on funerary events across sub-Saharan Africa. The contributions offer an in-depth understanding of the broad changes and underlying causes in African societies over the years, such as changes in religious beliefs, social structure, urbanization, and technological changes and health.
