A New Christian Identity by Amy B. Voorhees Pdf

In this study of Christian Science and the culture in which it arose, Amy B. Voorhees emphasizes Mary Baker Eddy's foundational religious text, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Assessing the experiences of everyday adherents after Science and Health's appearance in 1875, Voorhees shows how Christian Science developed a dialogue with both mainstream and alternative Christian theologies. Viewing God's benevolent allness as able to heal human afflictions through prayer, Christian Science emerged as an anti-mesmeric, restorationist form of Christianity that interpreted the Bible and approached emerging modern medicine on its own terms. Voorhees traces a surprising story of religious origins, cultural conversations, and controversies. She contextualizes Christian Science within a wide swath of cultural and religious movements, showing how Eddy and her followers interacted regularly with Baptists, Methodists, Congregationalists, Catholics, Jews, New Thought adherents, agnostics, and Theosophists. Influences flowed in both directions, but Voorhees argues that Christian Science was distinct not only organizationally, as scholars have long viewed it, but also theologically, a singular expression of Christianity engaging modernity with an innovative, healing rationale.

Science and Health 1875 by Mary Baker Eddy Pdf

A reprint of the historic 1st Edition of the book, Science and Health that over the course of more than 400 editions has uplifted the word Today in the year 2016 - the 150the anniversary year of the discovery of Christian Science in 1866 - it becomes appropriate to look back in time to the revolutionary change in the perception of God and man with which the great uplift began that history tells us coincides with the greatest period of peace in the world. It took Mary Baker Eddy (named Mary Baker Glover at the time) a full nine years of scientific spiritual development until she was ready to publish the first edition of a comprehensive textbook of the science that she had discovered, which is presented in this book. While the book was constantly upgraded in the course of more than 400 editions, since the its first publication in 1875, the revolutionary spirit that shines through its pages from the very beginning is still valid today, and valuable for inspiring healing effects as it did from its first day on. I am republishing the historic text to enable a fuller appreciation of the depth of her work from the beginning, and the great amount of work by Mary Baker Eddy that preceded the final edition of the book in 1910, a labor of love spanning 35 Years. This reprint of the 1st Edition has all of Mary Baker Eddy's errata applied, instead of merely appended. - Rolf A. F. Witzsche

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures 1889 by Mary Baker Eddy Pdf

The 48th Edition (1889), presented here, is historically significant as the year of its publication marks a turning point in the development of the Church of Christ Scientist. 1889 is the year in which Mary Baker Eddy closed the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, dissolved the church as a corporate structure, and moved away from Boston to the quiet Concord where she devoted herself for the next two years to a major revision of the textbook on Christian Science that became the 50th Edition, published in 1891. With this step completed, she reorganized the church on an 'incorporeal' bases, based on a deed of trust and governed from 1895 on. by the by-laws of its Church Manual, the Manual of the Mother Church, which she is the author of. The 48th Edition marks the beginning of this turning transition. I personally find the 48th Edition interesting, and glad to be sharing it, for its revolutionary concepts that mark the beginning of the great transition. Referring to the earlier, now historic editions of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy counsels, ..".do not attempt to dispose of the earlier editions." Fortunate is he who has all former revisions, together with the original edition of 1875! They are indicators of successive stages of growth in Christian Science, ...Keep them all; they will prove a "treasure trove." ... "Let the new (modern) volume be studied in connection with earlier editions. The very contrasts help to see how the thoughts have risen only as we have been able to receive them. ... It is simply because the advancing thought, or demonstration, of Christian Students has ascended to that plane which makes it both possible and practicable for us to have the new (modern) Work. MARY BAKER G. EDDY -from the Christian Science Journal, April, 1891. This reprint edition has been prepared with great effort in a project to make the earlier editions, which have largely disappeared from the landscape, accessible again, and this not only in printed form, but also in PDF form that is electronically searchable, and selectively printable. During the editorial process, I, as editor of the printed format have taken the liberty to include a number of subheadings into the Table of Contents, shown in brackets, that I find of personal interest and have included for this reason, to share my interest. Please note, it is an enormously tedious task to recompile a printed historic book with historic terminology and spelling. While great care has been taken to verify the electronically scanned and converted text for accuracy, some typographical errors may have made it past the guard. If so, please excuse the oversight. Leaving Christian Science by Lauren Hunter Pdf

Whether you're a Christian Scientist searching for answers or a former follower still struggling to let go of the difficult and confusing teachings of Christian Science, this book can help you on your search for truth. In these ten intensely personal narratives, former Christian Scientists bravely recount their journey out of the religion and into authentic, biblical faith in Jesus Christ. Each chapter addresses a different theme, shining light on theological inconsistencies taught by Mary Baker Eddy in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. These themes include matter, Jesus Christ, contagion, prayer, and sin. With reflection questions, pastoral teaching, related Bible verses, and a guiding letter from the author, each story navigates common obstacles and paves the way for a deeper understanding of the Christian faith. For those yearning to find truth, there is hope to be found here.
