Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management by John G. Moore Pdf

The third International Symposium on the Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management was held in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 17-20, 1980, as part of the Annual Meeting of the Materials Research Society. The purpose of this Symposium was to provide an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of scientific research dealing with all levels and types of radioactive wastes and their management. Since its inception in 1978, this annual Symposium has provided a unique opportunity for scientists of widely differing backgrounds to share in such discussions. The proceedings of the first two meetings were published as Volumes 1 and 2 in this series. The fourth Symposium is scheduled to be held in the autumn of 1981. The efforts of many people went into making this meeting a success. The scope of the 1980 Symposium was guided by the follow ing Steering Committee: K. J. Notz (Chairman), Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA G. H. Daly, Department of Energy, USA D. E. Ferguson, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA R. H. Flowers, Atomic Energy Research Establishment, UK F. Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management by Gregory J. McCarthy Pdf

During late 1978, a symposium entitled "Science Underlying Radioactive Waste Management" was one component of the Annual Meet ing of the Materials Research Society held in Boston, Massachusetts. The purpose of this Symposium was to bring together for the first time the entire range of sciences that form the basis for the treatment, solidification and isolation of radioactive wastes. Some 79 papers were presented to an international audience of over 300. The Symposium was such an impressive success that another will be held at the 1979 Annual Meeting of the Materials Research Society. The proceedings of the forthcoming symposium will also be published and it is for this reason that the present volume has been desig nated Volume 1. The scope of the Symposium was defined by the following steer ing committee: Rustum Roy, The Pennsylvania State University (Chairman) Richard S. Claassen, Sandia Laboratories Don Ferguson, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Victor I. Spitsyn, U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences, Moscow David B. Stewart, United States Geological Survey Torbjorn Westermark, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. The program was organized by the following committee: Gregory J. McCarthy, The Pennsylvania State University (Cha- man) Harry C. Burkholder, Battelle Memorial Institute Arnold M. Friedman~ Argonne National Laboratory Werner Lutze, Hahn-Meitner Institut, Berlin John G. Moore, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Robert W. Potter, II, United States Geological Survey Richard L. Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management XXVIII by John M. Hanchar,Simcha Stroes-Gascoyne,Lauren Browning Pdf

This popular and long-standing proceedings series has become the premier international forum for scientific and engineering issues related to all levels and types of radioactive wastes and their management. The volume covers the usual range of topics, from studies on spent fuel, UO2, glass and ceramic waste forms, to container and radionuclide behavior studies. A highlight of the volume is a series of presentations on performance assessment. A new topic for the volume is waste-, tank- and site-cleanup and decommissioning.

Corrosion of Ceramic and Composite Materials, Second Edition by Ronald A. McCauley Pdf

Corrosion of Ceramic and Composite Materials, Second Edition is a primary source of guidance for the assessment, interpretation, and inhibition of corrosion phenomena. This book discusses all aspects of corrosion of ceramics, including environments, mechanisms, and materials, and the means to minimize or eliminate corrosion. The author compiles key findings and literature highlights from nearly a decade of scientific advancement, covering emerging techniques in corrosion analysis, characterization, and prediction. He provides at-a-glance coverage of national and international testing procedures for the evaluation of materials stability. The book covers the fundamentals of corrosion by gases, liquids, and solids of several ceramic materials including crystalline materials, glasses, composites, bioceramics, and advanced ceramics. It also discusses property/corrosion relationships and testing. The book collects a generous number of models, figures, and studies illustrating techniques to minimize and reduce the effects of various mechanisms contributing to the corrosion of civil, aerospace, and military structures. The second edition includes a review of all the current literature since publication of the first edition, an additional chapter on composites, and major sections added on bioceramics and weathering of construction materials. Corrosion of Ceramic and Composite Materials, Second Edition explains existing corrosion problems and offers an excellent guide to the design and development of corrosion-resistant structures.

Geological Repository Systems for Safe Disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuels and Radioactive Waste by Michael J Apted,Joonhong Ahn Pdf

Geological disposal has been internationally adopted as the most effective approach to assure the long-term, safe disposition of the used nuclear fuels and radioactive waste materials produced from nuclear power generation, nuclear weapons programs, medical, treatments, and industrial applications. Geological repository systems take advantage of natural geological barriers augmented with engineered barrier systems to isolate these radioactive materials from the environment and from future populations. Geological repository systems for safe disposal of spent nuclear fuels and radioactive waste critically reviews the state-of-the-art technologies, scientific methods, regulatory developments, and social engagement approaches directly related to the implementation of geological repository systems. Part one introduces geological disposal, including multiple-barrier geological repositories, as well as reviewing the impact of nuclear fuel recycling practices and underground research laboratory activities on the development of disposal concepts. Part two reviews geological repository siting in different host rocks, including long-term stability analysis and radionuclide transport modelling. Reviews of the range of engineered barrier systems, including waste immobilisation technologies, container materials, low pH concretes, clay-based buffer and backfill materials, and barrier performance are presented in Part three. Part four examines total system performance assessment and safety analyses for deep geological and near-surface disposal, with coverage of uncertainty analysis, use of expert judgement for decision making, and development and use of knowledge management systems. Finally, Part five covers regulatory and social approaches for the establishment of geological disposal programs, from the development of radiation standards and risk-informed, performance-based regulations, to environmental monitoring and social engagement in the siting and operation of repositories. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Geological repository systems for safe disposal of spent nuclear fuels and radioactive waste is a standard reference for all nuclear waste management and geological repository professionals and researchers. Critically reviews the state-of-the-art technologies, scientific methods, regulatory developments, and social engagement approaches related to the implementation of geological repository systems Chapters introduce geological disposal and review the development of disposal concepts Examines long-term stability analysis, the range of engineered barrier systems and barrier performance
