FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF PHARMACOGNOSY SCIENCE by Prof(Dr)Sailesh Narayan ,Dr. Sabita Kumari ,Mr. Sandip Chatterjee Pdf

This textbook marks a pioneering attempt to align with the updated syllabus set by the Pharmacy Council of India for semester-4, focusing on Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry-I. While numerous established authors have penned texts on Pharmacognosy, this edition distinguishes itself by presenting information in a simplified manner, complemented with abundant tables, figures, and essential diagrams. The primary goal is to facilitate easy comprehension for students. Aligned with the revised syllabus of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) course regulations 2014, this book follows the norms outlined in Regulations 6, 7 & 8 and subsequent amendments from 2017 onward, ensuring uniformity across India. The content is structured to match the semester-wise syllabus, with Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry-I falling under semester-IV. This subject comprises five sub-units: Unit – I: Encompassing discussions on the history, scope, interconnections with related disciplines, and contemporary applications of Pharmacognosy. It delves into crude drug classifications, various sources, and emphasizes quality control techniques, including detection methods for adulterants through microscopic evaluation and camera lucida. Unit − II: This unit provides a comprehensive exploration of cultivation, collection, processing, and storage of naturally derived drugs. It emphasizes Good Agricultural Practice, factors influencing cultivation, and the role of plant hormones. Additionally, it covers crop improvement techniques such as polyploidy, mutation, and hybridization, as well as the conservation of medicinal and aromatic plants. Unit − III: Explores alternative cultivation methods through in-vitro techniques, specifically plant cell and tissue culture. It traces the historical development, types of cultures, nutritional requirements, growth, and maintenance under sterile laboratory conditions. The unit also touches upon applications of plant tissue culture in Pharmacognosy. Unit − IV: Focuses on Pharmacognosy's role in allopathy and traditional medicinal systems like Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy, and Chinese medicine. It elucidates the significance of plant secondary metabolites and methods for identifying alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, volatile oils, and resins. Unit − V: Covers the study of biological sources, chemical nature, and uses of drugs derived from plant fibers and primary metabolites. Detailed discussions include their chemistry, sources, preparation, evaluation, therapeutic uses, and commercial utility as Pharmaceutical aids. Additionally, it delves into important drugs obtained from marine sources. This book endeavors to offer contemporary knowledge in a systematic manner across all units. Your feedback and constructive criticism are invaluable and will be incorporated into future editions to rectify any shortcomings. SYLLABUS UNIT-I Introduction to Pharmacognosy: (a) Definition, history, scope and development of Pharmacognosy (b) Sources of Drugs – Plants, Animals, Marine & Tissue culture (c) Organized drugs, unorganized drugs (dried latex, dried juices, dried extracts, gums and mucilage’s, oleoresins, and oleo- gum -resins). Edible Wild Plants: An alternative approach to food security by Shabnum Shaheen,Mushtaq Ahmad,Nidaa Haroon Pdf

This text focuses on underutilized wild plants that can help to reduce food deficiency in developing nations. Edible wild plants are viewed as a potential solution for overcoming food insecurity for families in these regions, with a specific focus on sustainable production and conservation measures. Detailed analysis of specific wild plants is provided, including the nutritional contents of each plant. A full list of edible wild plants is included for the benefit of researchers, plus a pictorial guide for easy identification of these plants. Specific case studies are provided in which edible wild plants are used to reduce food insecurity, and the diversity of edible wild plants is studied from a global perspective. In developing countries, a significant obstacle to human survival is the increasing gap between food availability and the growing human population. Food insecurity results in less consumption of fruits and vegetables and leads to mineral and vitamin deficiency for individuals in these regions. Edible Wild plants: An alternative approach to food security focuses on growing and using wild plants in order to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition. Wild edible plants are inexpensive and are a rich source of antioxidants, vitamins, fiber, and minerals. As the first book to specifically focus on edible wild plants and their vital role in food security and nutrition, this text is incredibly valuable to any researcher studying innovative potential solutions to food deficiency in the developing world.

Innovative Saline Agriculture by J.C. Dagar,P.C. Sharma,D.K. Sharma,A.K. Singh Pdf

The land degradation due to salinity and waterlogging is a global phenomenon, afflicting about one billion hectares within the sovereign borders of at least 75 countries. Besides staring at the food security, it has far reaching and unacceptable socio-economic consequences since a large proportion of this land is inhabited by smallholder farmers. The anthropogenic-environmental changes and the climate change are further adding to the problem of salinity and waterlogging. The phenomenon of sea-level rise will bring more areas under waterlogged salinity due to inundation by sea water. Thus, dealing with the salinity in reality is becoming a highly onerous task owing to its complex nature, uncertainty and differential temporal and spatial impacts. Nevertheless, with the need to provide more food, feed, fuel, fodder and fiber to the expanding population, and non-availability of new productive land, there is a need for productivity enhancement of these lands. In fact, the salt-affected and waterlogged lands cannot be neglected since huge investments have been made throughout the world in the development of irrigation and drainage infrastructure. The social, economic and environmental costs being high for theon-and/off-farm reclamation techniques, saline agriculture including agroforestry inculcated with modern innovative techniques, is now emerging as a potential tool not only for arresting salinity and waterlogging but for other environmental services like mitigate climate change, sequester carbon and biodiversity restoration. This publication attempts to address a wide range of issues, principles and practices related to the salinity involved in rehabilitation of waterlogged saline soils and judicious use of saline waters including sea water. Many of the site specific case studies typical to the saline environment including coastal ecologies sustaining productivity, rendering environmental services, conserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change have been described in detail. Written by leading researchers and experts of their own fields, the book is a must, not only for salinity experts but also for policy makers, environmentalists, students and educationists alike. More importantly, it contributes to reversing the salinity trends and teaches to sustain with salinity ensuring the livelihood of resource-poor farming families leaving in harsh ecologies including coastal areas which are more vulnerable to climate change.

Science of Ashwagandha: Preventive and Therapeutic Potentials by Sunil C. Kaul,Renu Wadhwa Pdf

Rapidly increasing aging population and environmental stressors are the two main global concerns of increasing incidence of a variety of pathologies in the modern society. The complex etiologies and pathologies cause major challenges to disease treatment. On the other hand, several herbs are known for their health-caring and disease-curing activities. Ashwagandha, a popular herb in Indian traditional home medicine, Ayurveda, has gathered increasing recognition in recent years when the chemically synthesized drugs for single target therapies showed limited success and adverse toxic effects. Ashwagandha is known as a powerful adaptogen and trusted to enhance function of the brain, reproductive system, cell-mediated immunity and increase the body's defense against disease, and possess anti-inflammatory, anticancer and anti-arthritic activities. In this book, for the first time, we provide a complete portrait on scientific understanding of the effects of Ashwagandha and its active principles for a variety of preventive and therapeutic activities.
