Second Course in Algebra (Classic Reprint) by Herbert Edwin Hawkes Pdf

Excerpt from Second Course in Algebra This book is designed to follow the authors' First Course in Algebra or any other text of similar scope and treatment. Experience shows that when a student returns to the study of algebra, after even a summer's vacation, a review is very necessary; and that it is absolutely indispensable if he comes back after a year spent on geometry. The review presented in the early chapters is brief, yet sufficiently thorough. Each review topic has been given a broader and more advanced treat ment than is permissible in a first course. New material is used throughout and many new applications are given in order to make the entire review appeal to the student as fresh and inviting. Elementary Algebra by John C. Stone Pdf

Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: Second Course Tms volume has been prepared as a companion to the first course in elementary algebra, written by the same authors. As its title suggests, the second course is designed for students who have had the equivalent of the work given in the first course. The first course gives one year's work, including the topics now generally taught in the first year of the average high school. The second course reviews the topics treated in the first course, amplifies the treatment in the latter by the addition of new matter where necessary, and extends the course to include all topics required for admission to college. Excerpt from Milne's Second Course in Algebra Equations and problems are especially emphasized. The problems are based on interesting facts gathered from a vari ety of' sources, including physics, geometry, and business. A few traditional problems are included for the purpose of familiarizing the pupil with them in case they appear on examination papers as well as for their disciplinary value. The formulae and applied problems are easily within the com prehension of the students for whom they are intended. Functionality has received brief but sufficient attention in the chapters on Graphic Solutions, where its utility is apparent. Practical Algebra Second Course (Classic Reprint) by Jos V. Collins Pdf

Excerpt from Practical Algebra Second Course The conception of functionality is developed as carefully and fully as it can be for pupils of the maturity of those who study algebra. The claims of this topic are now being strongly urged by the highest authorities. Many of the features of the author's First Year Course, such as simplicity of presentation, minimum number of cases in topics, treatment of factoring and of graphs, constant reference to the axioms in the solution of equations, systematic testing for accuracy, translating to and from algebraic language, conservatism in the order of topics, etc., will be found likewise in this book. The inductive treatment, so prominent a feature of the First Course, is partly replaced in this by the deductive, because pupils are now far better prepared to understand its meaning. First Course in Algebra (Classic Reprint) by Herbert E. Hawkes Pdf

Excerpt from First Course in Algebra The present revision of the Complete School Algebra bears substantially the same relation to the revised First Course and Second Course that the first edition bore to the original texts. In the revision of each of these texts material for which there is no strong demand from teachers has been omitted, and the entire work has been rewritten in the interest of greater simplicity and directness of appeal. The collections of exercises and problems are for the most part new and contain a larger proportion of easy exercises with simple results than the first edition. A striking feature of the revision is the inclusion of a large number of oral exercises in connection with the introduction of each new idea or Operation. It is the object of these exer cises to present the new concept in complete isolation from any complication of notation or technique so that the student becomes familiar with its content and bearing before he is asked to make use of it in written work. These oral exercises may well be taken up when the advance lesson is assigned, so that the pupil may be certain that he understands the idea involved in the new work before he leaves his instructor. Another feature scarcely less important is the character and position of the examples and hints. The aim has been to help the student at the exact point where he needs it and to avoid the insertion of lengthy and difficult solutions before they can be completely understood. The definitions and axioms have been expressed in the simplest language which is consistent with scientific accuracy. Many definitions which are usually found in elementary texts but which do not contribute to the clearness of the subject are omitted. Elementary Algebra by Cajori Pdf

Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: Second Year Course This book contains a brief review of the fundamental opera tions of algebra followed by a thorough presentation of the topics usually included in the work of the third half year. The material is so arranged that the choice of topics for review or advance study may be easily made. The book contains not only a large number of practical problems but also practical applications of graphs. Material for drill in the manipulation of exponents and radicals will be found in Chapter VII. Great pains have been taken to make the subject of logarithms accessible to beginners. The most difficult part in learning to compute with logarithms is the process of interpolation. Of the various arrangements of logarithmic tables which have been suggested, we have selected the one which renders interpolation easiest. The chapter on logarithms is introduced earlier than usual, on account of the great practical importance of the subject. If desired, it can be taken up later, after Chapter VI. The concept of a function does not receive isolated and abstract treatment; it is pre sented as a fundamental idea in proportion, variation, and graphics. Its connection with problems of everyday life is firmly established. The aims of the First Year Book have been kept in view in the preparation of this text. Emphasis is thrown upon clear ness of exposition and the use of expressions which recall the axiomatic processes involved. Continued stress has been laid upon oral exercises. Several of the practical problems given in the text were suggested by the perusal of an English book, T. Percy Nunn's Exercises in Algebra (including Trigonometry), Part I, 1913. Excerpt from High School Algebra Complete The Second Course in Algebra, beginning page 241, is designed for use in the second or third year of the high school course. In common practice the mathematics courses in high schools require a year of geometry following the first year algebra, but this course does not assume a knowledge of geometry; it may follow in a continuous study of the sub jcet through a year and a half or two years, as required in some schools. It must offer an Opportunity to the short term student to get a well established notion of the subject through quadratic equations. This text is arranged to satisfy such a course. All unnecessary theorems, proofs, and processes have been omitted. The problem lists are very short and are to be supplemented by the instructor from the experience of the class. It is, in fact, a course in generalized arithmetic, arranged to face the de mands made by the ninety per cent Of students who expect to leave school either during or at the expira tion of the high school course. School Algebra (Classic Reprint) by H. L. Rietz Pdf

Excerpt from School Algebra This Algebra is the second volume of a series of two books. It contains material for a half-year course and presupposes a year's work such as is provided in the authors' First Course, or any similar text. Since, in many schools, a year or more intervenes between the first and second courses in algebra, it has been deemed advisable to include a review of the First Course before proceeding to new subjects. This part of the book is, however, more than a mere hasty resume. While the student is reviewing the topics of the first year, he is at the same time making a distinct advance by seeing the subject from new view-points, which his added maturity and training enable him to appreciate. The selection of new topics in this Second Course is in accord with current practice in the best high schools. While the book contains material for thorough preparation for college, the authors have not had in mind solely the students making such preparation, but rather the great body of students who will go no further in our educational system than the high school. The chapter devoted to the notion of a function is introduced in 0 the belief that the high school student should become somewhat familiar with the idea Of the correspondence between two re lated variables. Along with the notion of a function, the graph is presented with a View to leading the students to picture and to visualize this correspondence.
