Second Intermission by Lois Breedlove Pdf

Who Can Tell Her Story? Deborah Blessing is a German Baptist who has chosen to play a devout Muslim woman in the play Afghanistan. She's in awe of the playwright, a Marine veteran named Jake Abbott, and hero worships the professor for the play's production, Gail Tremont. They're two of the reasons she's standing up to pressure from her community to act in the play. But mostly, it's the character herself. A devout woman of faith who risked her life for some strangers deserved to be played by a woman of faith. Who else could give her voice? This novella continues the story of Gail Tremont and Jake Abbott, following after book 2, The Show Goes On. While the novella isn't necessary to the plot of the trilogy, it offers some steamier romance between the two — and a side-journey into Deborah's story. Second Chance Romances features four women friends (and a few others) who have each other's backs. And really? There's little you can't do if you've got friends like that. You might even take another chance at love.

The Forward Frontier by Scott J. Bockus Pdf

"Thus, traveling across the country would soon commence, and I was excited by the prospect. So far, I had been in want of a new kind of adventure anyhow, as I had lately overstayed my welcome in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I had learned all the identifications of all the trees, shrubs, plants, animals, insects, rocks, clouds, and soils in that place; and met all the people I had need to. I grew somewhat tired of those mountains - covered in rocks and glacial debris and fir trees - though it remains among the most charitable scenes in all my since traveled ones. But ten months in the north woods can take a toll on the wanderer, and on his mind, and it was high time that I depart from it (not my mind of course, but the north woods). I made my courteous rounds and said my goodbyes to friends, colleagues, acquaintances, neighbors, allies, and even enemies alike; I had more of this last variety then I had made room for. Leaving a comfortable home has never been easy, I should think, in all of human history, but alas, I left it and did it passing by all the hills I had grown so fond of, and all the rivers and lakes and streams and ponds that I had swum in and fished in and admired for so long for their freedom and beauty. Indeed, I was leaving New England and heading the other way; away from that quaint and wonderful part of the country begotten in foliage and stuck in the corner of America like the gold nugget clinging to the quartz vein, and into what I could say was the unknown, or at least what could pass for the unknown if questioned by authorities." And so, after living in the White Mountains for nearly a year, Scott J. Bockus took to the road. It was the first time he would cross the Mississippi River and the first time he would pierce the west. An insatiable appetite for travel soon followed. The Forward Frontier is a personal account of his first two plunges into the guts of America.

Bernard Shaw and the BBC by Leonard W. Conolly Pdf

George Bernard Shaw's frequently stormy but always creative relationship with the British Broadcasting Corporation was in large part responsible for making him a household name on both sides of the Atlantic. From the founding of the BBC in 1922 to his death in 1950, Shaw supported the BBC by participating in debates, giving talks, permitting radio and television broadcasts of many of his plays - even advising on pronunciation questions. Here, for the first time, Leonard Conolly illuminates the often grudging, though usually mutually beneficial, relationship between two of the twentieth century's cultural giants. Drawing on extensive archival materials held in England, the United States, and Canada, Bernard Shaw and the BBC presents a vivid portrait of many contentious issues negotiated between Shaw and the public broadcaster. This is a fascinating study of how controversial works were first performed in both radio and television's infancies. It details debates about freedom of speech, the editing of plays for broadcast, and the protection of authors' rights to control and profit from works performed for radio and television broadcasts. Conolly also scrutinizes Second World War-era censorship, when the British government banned Shaw from making any broadcasts that questioned British policies or strategies. Rich in detail and brimming with Shaw's irrepressible wit, this book also provides links to online appendices of Shaw's broadcasts for the BBC, texts of Shaw's major BBC talks, extracts from German wartime propaganda broadcasts about Shaw, and the BBC's obituaries for Shaw.

Opera in the Tropics by Rogério Budasz Pdf

Opera in the Tropics is an engaging exploration of theater with music in Brazil from the mid 1500s to the early 1820s. Author Rogério Budasz delves into the practices of the actors, singers, poets, and composers who created and performed Jesuit moral plays, Spanish comedias, and Portuguese vernacular operas and entremezes during the colonial period, as well as the Italian operas that celebrated the new independent nation in 1822. A Brazilian producer claimed in 1825 that the goal of music-theater was to instruct, entertain, and distract the population. Budasz argues that this threefold goal had in fact been present throughout the colonial period, in different combinations and with different purposes, at the hands of missionaries, intellectuals, bureaucrats, political leaders, and cultural producers. While Budasz demonstrates a continuity from Portuguese theatrical practices, primarily through the circulation of artists and repertory, he also examines a number of localized departures from the metropolitan model, particularly in the ethnic and gender profile of theatrical workers, in the modifications determined by local tastes, priorities, and materials, and in the political use of theater as an ideological and civilizing tool within the paradoxical context of a slave society. An eye-opening narrative of the transformations and uses of a colonial art form, Opera in the Tropics will be essential reading for all interested in the music and theater in Iberian and Latin American culture.
