Seeking Shelter by Cynthia Ehrenkrantz Pdf

Cynthia Ehrenkrantz was six in 1939 when Britain entered World War II. She was twelve in 1945 when the war ended. Seeking Shelter is her vivid child's-eye account of life in wartime England as she lived it: an adored only child in a large Jewish clan whose comfortable existence becomes one of food shortages, gas masks and air-raid sirens, and - worst of all - being sent away for months and years at a stretch to escape German bombs. Contending with bullies, rushing from a warm bed to a backyard shelter when sirens wail. Life is hard but also good: shining in a school play, collecting foil for the war effort, celebrating Passover... These are the mixed realities of wartime that mark young Cynthia forever in ways only adult Cynthia can understand.

Women Seeking Shelter by Jean Romano Pdf

The three women highlighted in this story were chosen to represent a family whose records are all documented through husbands and fathers. They are from very different cultural backgrounds, French, Scots, and English, yet they are the true core of the American woman of their times. Diversity is greater now but it was always part of the countrys fabric. The women had a geographic location near the sea. This ensured a contact with both Europe and South America from the earliest times, not only because of wars, but in response to the world of ships, ship building and trade. In the 19th century, few citizens of the new country were involved in news from abroad as were those from the ports of New England and the docks of New York. Specific events from the life time of the three Sarahs are briefly described to show how modern times are clearly tied to the past. Each successive Sarah was affected by what happened to those who preceded her on the family tree. The Sarahs would also be astonished by the role of women in the 21st century. It is a premise of this book that the past and present are clues to the future and common themes run through history despite superficial changes.

In the Shelter by Pádraig Ó Tuama Pdf

From master storyteller and host of On Being's Poetry Unbound, Pádraig Ó Tuama, comes an unforgettable memoir of peace and reconciliation, Celtic spirituality, belonging, and sexual identity. "It is in the shelter of each other that the people live." Drawing on this Irish saying, Ó Tuama relates ideas of shelter and welcome to our journeys of life, using poetry, story, biblical reflection, and prose to open up gentle ways of living well in a troubled world. In the Shelter introduces Corrymeela, the Northern Ireland peace and reconciliation community Ó Tuama led for many years, and throughout the book he reveals the power of storytelling in communities of conflict. From the heart of a poet comes a profound look at the landscapes we all try to inhabit even as we always search for shelter, a place we can call home. An instant spiritual classic in Ireland and Britain, now brought to a US readership.

Small States and Shelter Theory by Baldur Thorhallsson Pdf

Small states are dependent on the economic, political, and societal shelter provided by larger states and international organizations to survive and prosper. Iceland provides an ideal case study for shelter theory, due both to its smallness as compared with its larger neighbouring states, as well as its status as both an entity and then as a state. That Iceland has historically been so isolated, relative to other small European states, also makes it easier to trace the country’s interactions with other actors, since the impact of each interaction can be measured more definitively thus broadening the theory’s validity and offering new insights into its operations. The contributors to this volume focus on the extent of Iceland’s external engagement with other states and the domestic consequences of this interaction. Societal shelter, in terms of transfer of norms and values, is as of much importance as economic and political shelter. By unpacking the structure of Iceland’s external relations, this book demonstrates both the size-related disadvantages and the unique needs of small states to evaluate, explain, and predict small state behaviour. This book will be of interest to all scholars in international relations, especially those interested in small state behaviour.
