Selected Drama and Verse by Franciszka Ursz Radziwillowa Pdf

This edition presents, for the first time in English, a selection from the repertoire of the first Polish woman dramatist, Princess Franciszka Urszula Radziwiłłowa (1705-1753), with a historical-biographical Introduction incorporating interpretations of her works. Radziwiłłowa's plays treated complex issues concerning intimate relationships. In her poetry she explored new, very personal, means of expression for intimate declarations, in a form of language capable of conveying the emotional distress that could not find expression under existing conventions.

Mathilde Blind: Selected Fin-de-Siècle Poetry and Prose by James Diedrick Pdf

Mathilde Blind’s contributions to the New Woman and Decadent movements in the 1880s and 1890s placed her at the centre of fin-de-siècle literary culture. She rose to prominence in the early 1870s, both as an expert on and proponent of the poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley and as one of the few women writers published in the Dark Blue (1871–73), an influential journal that featured the work of Britain’s leading Pre-Raphaelites and aesthetes. By the late 1880s, she had established close associations with key figures of England’s emergent Decadent communities, from Vernon Lee and Rosamund Marriott Watson to Oscar Wilde and Arthur Symons. When her Dramas in Miniature appeared in 1891, she was fusing aestheticism and Decadence so distinctively in her poetry that Symons evoked Charles Baudelaire in calling the dramatic monologues in the volume ‘flowers of evil’. Her career thus highlights the connections between mid-Victorian aestheticism and late-century Decadence. It also serves as an important corrective to the male-focused narratives that long dominated accounts of these movements. In addition, and because Blind was born in Germany of Jewish parents and part of a community of exiled European radicals, her poetry and prose alike are characterized by a transnational, cosmopolitan outlook that ranges across national borders and consistently engages with Continental writers and ideas. This new edition for the first time brings together the three major volumes of poetry Blind published between 1889 and 1895 alongside a critical introduction and explanatory notes. Because she was also an active reviewer and essayist throughout her career, it includes a selection of her reviews as well as her essay ‘Shelley’s View of Nature Contrasted with Darwin’s’, which serves as an important supplement to her 1889 volume The Ascent of Man. The edition also features a selection of critical responses to Blind’s writing by leading late-Victorian poets and critics.

Shakespeare in Tale and Verse by Lois Grosvenor Hufford Pdf

Excerpt from Shakespeare in Tale and Verse In retelling these tales from Shakespeare, the author's purpose is to introduce Shakespeare to the young, and to such of their elders as find the intricacies of the plots of the dramas somewhat difficult to untangle. For, although in naming the best books of the world, Shakespeare is usually mentioned after the Bible, comparatively few of the great reading public are familiarly acquainted with Shakespeare's plays. The stories that constitute the main plots are given, and these are interspersed with the dramatic dialogue in such a manner as to make tale and verse interpret each other. The author has endeavored to tell the stories from Shakespeare's point of view; to interpret sympathetically and truthfully the motives of the dramas and of the characters; to omit unessential details; and to select for quoting passages that are notable for strength and beauty, and those that have especial significance in revealing character. Dramatic Extracts in Seventeenth-Century English Manuscripts by Laura Estill Pdf

Throughout the seventeenth century, early modern play readers and playgoers copied dramatic extracts (selections from plays and masques) into their commonplace books, verse miscellanies, diaries, and songbooks. Dramatic Extracts in Seventeenth-Century English Manuscripts: Watching, Reading, Changing Plays is the first to examine these often overlooked texts, which reveal what early modern audiences and readers took, literally and figuratively, from plays. As this under-examined archival evidence shows, play readers and playgoers viewed plays as malleable and modular texts to be altered, appropriated, and, most importantly, used. These records provide information that is not available in other forms about the popularity and importance of early modern plays, the reasons plays appealed to their audiences, and the ideas in plays that most interested audiences. Tracing the course of dramatic extracting from the earliest stages in the 1590s, through the prolific manuscript circulation at the universities, to the closure and reopening of the theatres, Estill gathers these microhistories to create a comprehensive overview of seventeenth-century dramatic extracts and the culture of extracting from plays. Dramatic Extracts in Seventeenth-Century English Manuscripts: Watching, Reading, Changing Plays explores new archival evidence (from John Milton’s signature to unpublished university plays) while also analyzing the popularity of perennial favorites such as Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The study of dramatic extracts is the study of particulars: particular readers, particular manuscripts, particular plays or masques, particular historic moments. As D. F. McKenzie puts it, “different readers [bring] the text to life in different ways.” By providing careful analyses of these rich source texts, this book shows how active play-viewing and play-reading (that is, extracting) ultimately led to changing the plays themselves, both through selecting and manipulating the extracts and positioning the plays in new contexts. Verse Plays and Epic by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Pdf

This volume presents the four plays and the narrative poem that, along with Faust, established Goethe as one of the masters of European verse drama and epic. These works in particular display a balance between poetic form and ethical sensibility that characterizes much of Goethe's work during the era of Weimar Classicism. Here we are offered new translations of the dramas Iphigenia in Tauris, Torquato Tasso, The Natural Daughter, and Pandora and of the epic poem Hermann and Dorothea.
