Development Of Educational Services, 1879-1896: Selections From Educational Records Of The Government Of India (new Series) by Suresh Chandra Ghosh Pdf

Description: This volume consists of records of Govt. of India relating to development of Educational Services and aspects of modern academic profession. Since 1920 the Education Department of the Government of India has produced a series of volumes consisting of selections from the departmental records. Between 1958 and 1971 the National Archives of India and since 1971 the Educational Records Research Unit at Jawaharlal Nehru University have been entrusted with the function of selection and publication of educational records. The present volume, under the New series published by the JNU, as a part of an earlier volume, consists of selected records of the Government of India relating to the development of the educational service, and more generally on aspects of the growth of the modern academic profession in its early stage. In the Foreword the General Editor of the series provides a brief survey of the context in which the Education Service develops and a critical overview of policy characteristics such as bias against native recruitment to higher grades of the service, the academically dysfunctional influence of the bureaucratic ethos of the government services, the inadequacy of educational finance etc. The Editor of this volume in his introduction offers a commentary on the sequence of developments leading to the foundation of the Indian Education Service. The volume will be useful to educationists and historians as well as to those who are interested in the growth of the academic profession in modern India.

The Great Indian Education Debate by Martin Moir,Lynn Zastoupil Pdf

A bitter debate erupted in 1834 between Orientalists and Anglicists over what kind of public education the British should promote in their growing Indian empire. This collection of the main documents pertaining to the controversy (some published for the first time) aims to recover the major British and South Asian voices, broaden our understanding of imperial discourses and recognise the significant role of the colonised in the shaping of colonial knowledge. Bringing together into a single volume documents not easily obtained - long out of print, never before published, or scattered about in sundry books and journals - enables modern readers to judge the relative merits of the various arguments and undermines the common impression that the controversy was simply an exercise in colonial power involving only Europeans.

Pathways to Nationalism by S. Ganeshram Pdf

This book examines the socio-economic factors in the rise and development of nationalism in the Tamil-speaking region of the Madras Presidency in India between 1858 and 1918. It analyses the dynamic interaction between socio-economic conditions and nationalism in Tamil Nadu by applying both historical methods of documentary analysis and a sociological perspective. The volume looks at the advent of Western education and the role of Christian missionaries, the growth of the local press, socio-religious reform movements, decline of indigenous industries and the land revenue policies of the colonial government to arrive at a comprehensive portrait of the rise of nationalism in the Madras Presidency. The volume is invaluable for scholars of colonial history and the Indian freedom movement in southern India.
