This book is derived from the first of nine discourses contained in the first volume of Stephen Charnock's The Existence and Attributes of God. He was born in 1628 in London. He studied under Dr. William Sancroft who was once the Archbishop of Canterbury. A detailed account of his life is included in the text. The Old English style is preserved. There is one instance where Stephen Charnock initially lists a set of arguments out of the order in which he addresses them later in his writings. Since there is no other instance of this in the rest of the discourse, the sequence of the initial list has been updated to correct this obvious and unintentional error by the author. Section headings have been added to help guide the reader through his flow of thoughts. The section titles themselves are derived, wherever possible, from actual quotes in the passage. In some instances, a section break was clear but the passage that followed did not provide a straightforward statement that could be easily leveraged as a summary of the passage. Biblical references have been updated to reflect current norms.

The Existence and Attributes of God comprises the first two volumes of the works of Stephen Charnock (1628-1680), an English puritan divine who was highly skilled in philosophy, patristics, Reformed theology, and Biblical languages. These volumes are his abiding monument. They are worthy of being compared with the finest in theology. "When the existence and attributes of God are called into question, to whom else can we better go than to Stephen Charnock'' . . . ''those [things revealed belong to us and to our children forever]. One of the greatest tragedies in these spiritually starved times is the sad fact that most Christians know so very little about their God. "Charnock displays God's attributes not as impersonal abstractions for the mind to juggle with, but as qualities observable in the concrete actions of the living God of which the Bible speaks. The technical terms and sometimes, arguments of scholastic theology are employed, but always with a Biblical orientation. Charnock has no desire to speculate, but only to declare the works and ways, the nature and character, of the God of the Bible. The substance of his doctrine is characteristically Puritan and representatively Reformed." (Dr. James I.
