Selections From the Sources of English History by Charles W. Colby Pdf

Excerpt from Selections From the Sources of English History: Being a Supplement to Text-Books of English History B. C. 1832 The design of this book is stated in the early part of the introduction, and little excuse could therefore be found for making the preface more than a list of acknowledgments. Two points, however, which are not mentioned elsewhere, may properly be spoken of here. Firstly, care has been taken to keep both passages and comment within the compass of boys sixteen years old. They may meet with a certain number of unfamiliar allusions, but few which a glance at the Encyclopedia Britannica will not clear up. In the second place, and as a kind of corollary, the spelling and style of printing have been modernised wherever I feared that an archaic guise might prove a stumbling-block. Some will consider this a piece of vandalism, like the stupid "restoration" of an old building, but, rather unwillingly, I sacrifice the picturesqueness of a sixteenth or seventeenth century page for the sake of rendering its text more intelligible. The friends who have assisted me with advice, information and other aid are many, and on the completion of a pleasant task I thank them cordially for their varied suggestions and services. Among those who have helped me materially are Prof. C. E. Moysc, Dean Walton, Mr. P. T. Lafleur, Prof. Frank Carter and Mr. C. H. Gould, of McGill University ; Prof. Charles Gross, Prof. A. B. Hart and Mr. T. J. Kieman, of Harvard University; Prof. G. M. Wrong, of Toronto University; Dr. C. A. Herter and Mr. Alex. Falconer. In preparing the printer's manuscript the help of Miss Helen Fairbaim has been most grateful. I am also indebted to several translators and publishers for permission to reprint pieces of which they enjoy the copyright. Original Sources of English History (Classic Reprint) by L. F. Salzman Pdf

Excerpt from Original Sources of English History Arlier generations of schoolboys learnt English History as a series of unrelated facts set out in text-books of doubtful accuracy but indubitable dullness these facts, and above all the dates of their occurrence, they memorized, at the command of their teachers, with the intelligence, if not always with the fidelity, of the average parrot. More of such teachers and text-books have survived the passage of years than might have been hoped; but for some time past more enterprising teachers have supplemented their text-books with Source Books - selections of excerpts and translations from ancient chronicles and contemporary records. Yet, so far as I know, no writer has attempted to show the relation between these extracts and the text-books, or to explain on what bases History is built up. This little book - which had its origin in a course of lectures on The Original Sources of English History, which I gave at St. George's School, Harpenden - seeks to fill that gap. Its objects are two; first, to give the reader some general idea of the materials which the historian can, and should, use, and next to indicate the fascinating light on history which the student can Obtain by indulging in research among those materials. If any critic would complain that I have omitted much worthy of mention, I would retort that I am well aware of that fact, and that, had I chosen, I could have written a prodigious learned book that would have completely failed to serve my purpose. That purpose is not to satiate but to stimulate the appetite. Those who are interested in what I have written will gain more by following the subject up for themselves; those who are bored may at least be grateful that I have been brief. For the same reason I have not attempted any elaborate biblio graphy; the few hints I have given of the where abouts of materials are sufficient to start the enthusiast on his path - a path on to which even the most portentous list of books would never beguile anyone else. Readings in English History Drawn From the Original Sources, Intended to Illustrate a Short History of England by Edward Potts Cheyney Pdf

Excerpt from Readings in English History Drawn From the Original Sources, Intended to Illustrate a Short History of England All intelligent teachers of history realize the desirability of having their students do more reading of history than is contained in the text-book, and most of them agree that this is best found in records and writings contemporary with the events being studied. But the practical problem of providing such readings for classes is by no means easy to solve. Those who have tried to procure the necessary number of copies of books, to discover English translations, to find applicable passages, and to make practicable requirements best know the difficulties of the task. I hope this book of readings from the original sources of English history will help to overcome these obstacles. It provides in easily accessible form a body of such material as large as can be actually utilized by most classes. It is intended to be used as a close companion to my Short History of England. The matter contained in it is arranged in the same order as the subjects taken up in the text-book, and is selected with a view to the further explanation and illustration of the principal points there discussed. It differs also from previous collections in drawing on a somewhat greater variety of historical material, and in being, it is believed, the result of a more extensive and prolonged search for suitable illustrative passages. Selected Readings in English History by Harriet Emily Tuell Pdf

Excerpt from Selected Readings in English History In offering to teachers of English history a new collection of readings the compilers of this volume believe that they arc meeting a widely recognized need. The time was when teachers in convention discussed the value of such collateral reading. Now they seek for ways and means. The value of the work is no longer in question. The general sentiment of teachers and the requirements of the colleges alike demand more than the best textbook can offer. The new demand, however, creates new problems. Where and how may suitable readings be obtained? The best equipment, undoubtedly, is furnished by a large school library with a great variety of books from which to choose and many duplicate copies of the most useful works. Hut the expense involved is very great - so great as to be in many cases prohibitory. The best alternative appears to he a collection of such extracts as arc suited to the purpose. By this means the pupil is furnished at moderate cost with the best a library affords. If the selections prove interesting he is impelled to go further afield by himself. The selection of such material is not easy. The need is for vivid and interesting reading calculated to produce a clear and definite impression. At first sight the field from which one may choose appears wide and fruitful, but it soon narrows down to a very limited area. Selections from the sources ''have been widely recommended and somewhat lavishly supplied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
