Semantic Techniques for the Web by Francois Bry,Jan Maluszynski Pdf

The objective of this state-of-the-art survey is to give a coherent overview of the main topics and results achieved by the Network of Excellence REWERSE on "Reasoning on the Web", funded by the European Commission and Switzerland within the "6th Framework Programme" (FP6), from 2004 to 2008. The material has been organized into eight chapters, each of which addresses one of the main topics of REWERSE: hybrid reasoning with rules and ontologies, lessons in versatility or how query languages adapt to the Web, evolution and reactivity in the Semantic Web, rule-based policy representations and reasoning, component models for Semantic Web languages, controlled English for reasoning on the Semantic Web, semantic search with GoPubMed, and information integration in bioinformatics with ontologies and standards. Each chapter gives an in-depth coverage of the subject and provides an extensive bibliography with pointers to further literature.

A new edition of the widely used guide to the key ideas, languages, and technologies of the Semantic Web The development of the Semantic Web, with machine-readable content, has the potential to revolutionize the World Wide Web and its uses. A Semantic Web Primer provides an introduction and guide to this continuously evolving field, describing its key ideas, languages, and technologies. Suitable for use as a textbook or for independent study by professionals, it concentrates on undergraduate-level fundamental concepts and techniques that will enable readers to proceed with building applications on their own and includes exercises, project descriptions, and annotated references to relevant online materials. The third edition of this widely used text has been thoroughly updated, with significant new material that reflects a rapidly developing field. Treatment of the different languages (OWL2, rules) expands the coverage of RDF and OWL, defining the data model independently of XML and including coverage of N3/Turtle and RDFa. A chapter is devoted to OWL2, the new W3C standard. This edition also features additional coverage of the query language SPARQL, the rule language RIF and the possibility of interaction between rules and ontology languages and applications. The chapter on Semantic Web applications reflects the rapid developments of the past few years. A new chapter offers ideas for term projects. Additional material, including updates on the technological trends and research directions, can be found at http://www.semanticwebprimer.org.

Reasoning Techniques for the Web of Data by A. Hogan Pdf

Linked Data publishing has brought about a novel “Web of Data”: a wealth of diverse, interlinked, structured data published on the Web. These Linked Datasets are described using the Semantic Web standards and are openly available to all, produced by governments, businesses, communities and academia alike. However, the heterogeneity of such data – in terms of how resources are described and identified – poses major challenges to potential consumers. Herein, we examine use cases for pragmatic, lightweight reasoning techniques that leverage Web vocabularies (described in RDFS and OWL) to better integrate large scale, diverse, Linked Data corpora. We take a test corpus of 1.1 billion RDF statements collected from 4 million RDF Web documents and analyse the use of RDFS and OWL therein. We then detail and evaluate scalable and distributed techniques for applying rule-based materialisation to translate data between different vocabularies, and to resolve coreferent resources that talk about the same thing. We show how such techniques can be made robust in the face of noisy and often impudent Web data. We also examine a use case for incorporating a PagerRank-style algorithm to rank the trustworthiness of facts produced by reasoning, subsequently using those ranks to fix formal contradictions in the data. All of our methods are validated against our real world, large scale, open domain, Linked Data evaluation corpus.

Ontology Learning for the Semantic Web by Alexander Maedche Pdf

Ontology Learning for the Semantic Web explores techniques for applying knowledge discovery techniques to different web data sources (such as HTML documents, dictionaries, etc.), in order to support the task of engineering and maintaining ontologies. The approach of ontology learning proposed in Ontology Learning for the Semantic Web includes a number of complementary disciplines that feed in different types of unstructured and semi-structured data. This data is necessary in order to support a semi-automatic ontology engineering process. Ontology Learning for the Semantic Web is designed for researchers and developers of semantic web applications. It also serves as an excellent supplemental reference to advanced level courses in ontologies and the semantic web.

Semantics Empowered Web 3.0 by Amit Sheth,Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan Pdf

After the traditional document-centric Web 1.0 and user-generated content focused Web 2.0, Web 3.0 has become a repository of an ever growing variety of Web resources that include data and services associated with enterprises, social networks, sensors, cloud, as well as mobile and other devices that constitute the Internet of Things. These pose unprecedented challenges in terms of heterogeneity (variety), scale (volume), and continuous changes (velocity), as well as present corresponding opportunities if they can be exploited. Just as semantics has played a critical role in dealing with data heterogeneity in the past to provide interoperability and integration, it is playing an even more critical role in dealing with the challenges and helping users and applications exploit all forms of Web 3.0 data. This book presents a unified approach to harness and exploit all forms of contemporary Web resources using the core principles of ability to associate meaning with data through conceptual or domain models and semantic descriptions including annotations, and through advanced semantic techniques for search, integration, and analysis. It discusses the use of Semantic Web standards and techniques when appropriate, but also advocates the use of lighter weight, easier to use, and more scalable options when they are more suitable. The authors' extensive experience spanning research and prototypes to development of operational applications and commercial technologies and products guide the treatment of the material. Quantitative Semantics and Soft Computing Methods for the Web: Perspectives and Applications by Brena, Ramon F. Pdf

The Internet has been acknowledged as a recent technological revolution, due to its significant impact on society as a whole. Nevertheless, precisely due to its impact, limitations of the current Internet are becoming apparent; in particular, its inability to automatically take into account the meaning of online documents. Some proposals for taking meaning into account began to appear, mainly the so-called Semantic Web, which includes a set of technologies like RDF that are based on new markup languages. Though these technologies could be technically sound, practical limitations, such as the high training level required to construct Semantic Web pages, and the small proportion of current Semantic Web pages make the Sematic Web marginal today and also in the near foreseeable future. Quantitative Semantics and Soft Computing Methods for the Web: Perspectives and Applications will provide relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings related to quantitative, soft-computing and approximate methods for dealing with Internet semantics. The target audience of this book is composed of professionals and researchers working in the fields of information and knowledge related technologies (e.g. Information sciences and technology, computer science, Web science, and artificial intelligence).

Emergent Web Intelligence: Advanced Semantic Technologies by Youakim Badr,Richard Chbeir,Ajith Abraham,Aboul-Ella Hassanien Pdf

The success of the World Wide Web depends on the ability of users to store, p- cess and retrieve digital information regardless of distance boundaries, languages and domains of knowledge. The universality and ?exibility of the World Wide Web have also enabled the rapid growth of a variety of new services and applications based on human–machine interaction. The semantics of exchanged information and services should be useful not only for human to human communications, but also in that machines would be able to understand and automatically process web content. Semanticsgive well-de?nedmeaningto web content and enable computersand p- ple to work in cooperation. Today, the crucial challenge becomes the development of languages to express information in a machine processable format. Now more than ever, new advanced techniques and intelligent approaches are required to tra- form the Web into a universal reasoning and computing machine. Web intelligence attempts to deal with this challenge by exploiting information technologies and - ti?cial intelligence approaches to design the next generation of web-empowered systems and services.
