Sensing Spirits by Marc A. Eaton Pdf

Based on ethnographic research, this book examines the paranormal investigation subculture in the US. Presenting interviews with investigators as well as extensive field observations, it explores their reasons for getting involved, their use of different investigative methods, the interpretive processes by which they individually and collectively ‘sense’ spirits, the ways in which these processes are influenced by small group power dynamics, and what paranormal investigation ultimately means to those who participate. While focusing on the practices by which investigators ‘sense’ spirits in small groups, the author also situates paranormal investigation within a broader cultural context and attends to how investigators attempt to legitimize their practice despite being marginalized by both science and religion. A fascinating study of ghosts as an inherently social phenomenon, Sensing Spirits will appeal to sociologists with interests in ethnography, interactionism, cultural studies and subcultures.

Of Spirits and Superstition, Sister Witches of Raven Falls Mystery Series, Book 4 by Nyx Halliwell Pdf

I see dead people…but I’m in big trouble when I become a ghost myself! I’m Winter Whitethorne, psychic medium, and I find it easier to get along with the dead than the living. I’ve perfected invisibility spells so I can ‘ghost’ those I don’t like. Haunted by spirits who refuse to cross over, I struggle to act “normal” and not give in to the bad luck that clings to me as deftly as my ghostly hitchhikers. When my boyfriend, Ronan, is attacked three days before Yule, leaving him in a magickal coma, I accidentally discover my destiny is far bigger than talking to dead people. Not only can I reach across the veil and communicate with them, I have the ability to raise them and change the very fabric of the world. There’s no invisibility spell that’s going to solve that problem. With my ghost cat familiar, Shade, as well as Persephone, a snarky new spirit guide who has a thing for ‘70s sitcoms, I embark on a journey to return Ronan’s spirit to his body and stop a magickal disaster prophesied to take place on Yule. But can I save my one true love and fix magick when I, too, end up a ghost?

Drones, Tones, and Timbres by Carole Pegg Pdf

An indispensable study of the music of Altai-Sayan peoples Based on more than twenty years of collaborative research, Carole Pegg’s long-awaited participatory ethnography explores how Indigenous nomadic peoples of Russia’s southern Siberian republics (Altai, Khakassia, Tyva) sound multiphonies of place in a post-Soviet global world. Inspired by the mountain-steppe ecology and pathways of nomadism, soundscapes created in performative ritual events cross political and multiple-world boundaries in a shamanic-animist universe, enabling human and spirit actor interactions in a series of sensuous worlds. As with the “throat-singing” for which Indigenous Altai-Sayan peoples are famous, senses of place involve sonic relations, rootedness, movement, and plurality. Pegg echoes their drone-partials musical and ontological models in an innovative theoretical entwinement. Three strands form the book’s multivocal drone, the partials of which sound in each chapter: ontological sonicality and musicality that enables emplacement and movement; the importance of shamanism-animism--at the core of Indigenous spiritual practices--for personhood and community; and the agency of sonic performances. Sounding place, Pegg demonstrates, is essential to the identities, ways of life, and very senses of being of Indigenous Altai-Sayan peoples.

American Possessions by Sean McCloud Pdf

Stories of contemporary exorcisms are largely met with ridicule, or even hostility. Sean McCloud argues, however, that there are important themes to consider within these narratives of seemingly well-adjusted people who attend school, go shopping, watch movies, and also happen to fight demons. American Possessions examines Third Wave spiritual warfare, a late twentieth-, early twenty-first century movement of evangelicals focused on banishing demons from human bodies, material objects, land, regions, political parties, and nation states. While Third Wave beliefs may seem far removed from what many scholars view as mainstream religious practice, McCloud argues that the movement provides an ideal case study for identifying some of the most prominent tropes within the contemporary American religious landscape. Drawing on interviews, television shows, documentaries, websites, and dozens of spiritual warfare handbooks, McCloud examines Third Wave practices such deliverance rituals (a uniquely Protestant form of exorcism), spiritual housekeeping (the removal of demons from everyday objects), and spiritual mapping (searching for the demonic in the physical landscape). Demons, he shows, are the central fact of life in the Third Wave imagination. McCloud provides the first book-length study of this influential movement, highlighting the important ways that it reflects and diverts from the larger, neo-liberal culture from which it originates.

Masquerade of the Dream Walkers by Peter A. Redpath Pdf

Through extensive textual analysis, this book concludes that the prevailing opinion about the nature of modern and contemporary philosophy is wrong. It maintains that almost all modern and contemporary philosophy is deconstructed, secularized, Augustinian theology, not philosophy. The work is divided into eight chapters, a guest Foreword by Herbert I. London (President of the Hudson Institute and Olin Professor of Humanities at New York University) notes, bibliography, and an index. Chapter 1 (Protagoras Sees the Ghost of Hippo) considers Cartesian thought, Hobbes, and Newton. Chapter 2 (I Feel the Spirit Move Me) examines Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. Chapter 3 (The Urge to Emerge) investigates Lessing and Rousseau. Chapters 4 (To Dream the Impossible Dream) and 5 (Wake Up, Wake Up, You Sleepyhead) treat Kant. Chapters 6 (I Am Music) and 7 (Looking for God in All The Wrong Places) deal with Hegel. Chapter 8 (Dirty Dancing: Higher Education as Enlightened Swindling) concludes that a lack of philosophical and historical experience coupled with a widespread inability to read philosophical texts according to the intention of the author (1) causes us to mistake secularized theology for philosophy and (2) is a main cause for the decline of contemporary universities.

Life Does Get Better by Sara Khan Pdf

DescriptionThe true and often painful story of a young woman's fight, her desperate need to be heard despite her family's traditional beliefs and their total abandonment. A painful journey which in itself brought the healing she sought but never received. This book contains her story and her poems in a story form. On her journey, she found God, who held her hand and is with her always. This book is an intensely moving and written from the heart and how there was fairy-tale ending. This is an intensely moving and excellently written book. About the AuthorSara Khan was born in 1969, oldest of five children. From an early age, her childhood was an unhappy one, which at such a young age she had no control over. When you are young the people you love most and trust are the people you turn to, she was trampled by family honour, family honour mattered more than anything at times more than life itself, her elders and their beliefs left her very confused. Writing the book brought back her troubled childhood, and although she does not go into detail about her sexual abuse in the book, she started to have flashbacks, and this was upsetting at times, but she managed to stay strong as she knew her story had to be told in order to help other victims. Brought up in a British country and raised with Asian values, which in reality was not a bad idea, if enforced correctly. Surrounded by a large family she always felt deep down as if she was adopted. She felt that she did not belong; inside she was hurting and had no one to share her terrifying pain. She managed to turn her life around and got married but the pain of her childhood was still there. Married to a lovely man, who has been her rock and who stood by her side in her fight for justice. She has two beautiful children who are her world and will protect them forever. Disowned by all her blood relatives for refusing to keep quiet, she wanted time to reflect and to put her suffering into perspective, she felt she had to make her voice heard. Each hurdle has served to make her a stronger person.
