You Don't Really Know Me: Why Mothers and Daughters Fight and How Both Can Win by Terri Apter Pdf

Understand what your teenage daughter really means—and learn to use your arguments to strengthen your bond with her. Mothers and teenage daughters argue more than any other child-parent pair—on average every two-and-a-half days. These quarrels, Terri Apter shows, are attempts to negotiate changes in a relationship that is valued by both mothers and daughters. A daughter often feels her mother doesn't know or understand her, and by fighting hopes to force her mother into a new awareness of who she really is, how she has changed, and what she is now capable of doing and understanding. But mothers often misinterpret their daughter's outbursts as signs of rejection, and they may pull back feeling hurt and confused. Through case studies and conversations between mothers and daughters, Apter shows mothers how to interpret the meanings behind a daughter's angry words and how to emerge from arguments with a new closeness.

It's Not Really Me by Blythe Dunwood Pdf

Walking barefoot makes me feel the ground, and preferably on a mix of yellow and white stones in my backyard. Windy days without the sun and big white puffy clouds make me smile. I love to crochet blankets, and usually choose multicolored yarns of cotton and silk blends, creating my own unique designs. My decorative senses are aroused watching runway fashion shows as I take in the flow of the dresses, along with the unique couture designs that are displayed. I also find myself thrilled watching gymnasts on the unparallel bars and floor competitions as they do multifaceted moves against the mats. I have fun at canine agility matches, watching the dogs move through the obstacle course races. I used to spend a lot of time drawing, and found it very relaxing. When I was first introduced to classical music I thought it was passé, but fell in love with it as I aged, somewhat like a fine wine. Even though I seldom drink wine, my preference continues to be a glass of Beaujolais Nouveau. I have spent many hours listening to Broadway shows, and I have memorized many of the lines from the CD’s. I am truly mesmerized by the incredible performances directly on the Broadway stage. When I was introduced to musicals in the theater on Broadway in Manhattan, it left an indelible impression upon me. The drama and intensity of the performances are truly remarkable. Watching an acrobat at work is also fascinating, even though I have never been able to master the skill myself. Eastern philosophy and yoga interest me, my favorite author being Thich Nhat Hanh. I spent many hours at The Ark bookstore in Santa Fe, New Mexico, enthralled buy one of his books entitled “The Way of Understanding,” and loved his writing style. I never thought I could, or would, ever write a book until now. Seventeen years have passed and I have finally decided to write a book myself. I used to love danger and driving at high speeds in the left hand lane, as well as doing stunt work one time long ago, but more recently came to the realization that it is too risky, despite the fact that it excites me. I enjoy driving, love the road, particularly being outside in the open air in my 4x4 Ford F450 truck. I find it hard to contain myself whenever I take to the streets of Manhattan, and feel the urge to drive like a taxi cab driver. As a kid, and now as well, I take myself right to the edge by going to the park, climbing onto a swing and going as high as I can. Even though I get dizzy and frightened, I feel exhilarated at the same time. I am so very impulsive in thought that I can even imagine the ride on the high swing as I write this bio. Roller coaster rides at Great Adventure were once a true delight for me, but not so much anymore. Now I spend many hours reading articles about psychology, hysteria, self-care articles, all the while practicing mathematics in an effort to sharpen my mind. I am a computer geek at heart, love moving the jumpers in the towers and enjoy setting up networks with encryptions for fun. My idea of a good time is developing my creativity by painting decorative wooden boxes, displaying them around my home and offering them to others so they can share in my enjoyment. I find learning about myself to be of the utmost importance, and also enjoy learning for the mere purpose of knowledge itself. I’m on an endless quest for self actualization, which guides my search for truth, philosophical retention and metaphysical studies as I try to keep my mind stimulated as often as possible.

Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi Pdf

Aminah Mae Safi's Tell Me How You Really Feel is an ode to romantic comedies, following two girls on opposite sides of the social scale as they work together to make a movie and try very hard not to fall in love. The first time Sana Khan asked out a girl–Rachel Recht--it went so badly that she never did it again. Rachel is a film buff and aspiring director, and she’s seen Carrie enough times to learn you can never trust cheerleaders (and beautiful people). Rachel was furious that Sana tried to prank her by asking her on a date. But when it comes time for Rachel to cast her senior project, she realizes that there’s no more perfect lead than Sana--the girl she's sneered at in the halls for the past three years. And poor Sana--she says yes. She never did really get over that first crush, even if Rachel can barely stand to be in the same room as her. Told in alternative viewpoints and set against the backdrop of Los Angeles in the springtime, when the rainy season rolls in and the Santa Ana's can still blow--these two girls are about to learn that in the city of dreams, anything is possible--even love.

Do You Really Get Me? by Joseph Shrand Pdf

Through his I-Maximum Approach, Dr. Shrand helps readers learn how to set aside self-doubt, show others they are valued, and make more meaningful connections. Through his I-Maximum Approach, Dr. Shrand helps readers learn how to set aside self-doubt, show others they are valued, and make more meaningful connections. In a sense, we all try to be mind readers. We “theorize” about whether we are admired or envied, despised or loved. Psychologists use the term “Theory of Mind” to describe our natural tendency to make assumptions about what others think and how they feel about us based on the tone of their voice, facial expressions, and body language. These cues either signal us to open up further and make a connection or to put up a wall to protect ourselves from rejection. But it is also easy to misinterpret these cues and become unnecessarily guarded, such as when someone appears to be angry with us and we later learn they were just having a bad day and the negative signs we were picking up really had nothing to do with us.The more emotional baggage we bring to our interactions, the more likely we are to negatively misinterpret other people’s feelings and the more disconnected from them we become. In this groundbreaking book, Joseph Shrand, MD, instructor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and Leigh Devine teach us that by setting aside self-doubt and assuming the best about ourselves and others, we can make more meaningful connections based on mutual respect and value. This is the heart of Dr. Shrand’s I-Maximum Approach, which teaches us to assume that we all are doing the best we can at any given time. With the heightened empathy that we gain from this approach comes a deeper understanding of our own and others’ mental and emotional states and how they influence our interactions, resulting in stronger connections and more rewarding relationships.

Ask a Manager by Alison Green Pdf

From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together
