Not illustrated. 1849 edition. Excerpt: ... PREFACE. The Reverend Lachlan Mackenzie of Lochcarron was no ordinary man. He has stamped his impress on a large portion of his countrymen. The remarkable contrast between the Highlanders of 1745 and 1845 is in no small degree owing to him. If Dr Macdonald of Urquhart led the clans of the Highlands and Islands under the Christian banner of the Disruption, Mr Lachlan's previous labours had a great influence in rescuing their minds from ignorance and barbarism, and bringing them under the power of the gospel. Neither Knox nor the Covenanters influenced the Highland mind. Hog of Kiltearn, Fraser of Alness, the Frasers of Kirkhill, the Calders, the Sages, the Macintoshes, the Bains, and the Kennedys, Mr Lachlan MacKenzie, and Dr John MacDonald--those were the evangelists and apostles of the Highlands and Islands. They succeeded to the influence over the minds of their countrymen which the ancient chieftains abused and the modern forfeited. To Mr Hog and Mr Lachlan the Highlanders ascribe something beyond ordinary ministers--a high acquaintance with the secret of the Lord, such as the Lowlanders claimed for John Knox and Robert Bruce. Mr Lachlan was a profound divine, an eloquent preacher, a deeply experienced Christian, and, withal, a classical scholar, a popular poet, a man of original genius, and eminently a man of prayer. Highland evangelists have often descended to the tomb without leaving any written remains or memoir. The following pages are an attempt to preserve some recollections of Mr Lachlan. This Memoir is compiled from the recollections of his only surviving sister and her son, some time my next neighbour in the ministry. The Sermons are from Mr Lachlan's manuscript. Certain statements in the Memoir that seem to claim...

The Rock of Our Salvation by Lachlan MacKenzie Pdf

The parish of Lochcarron was in deep spiritual darkness until God visited the area with a revival of religion in the early 18th century. Lachlan Mackenzie became minister of Lochcarron in 1782. He was known as one of the most eminently pious ministers of that era. Every Lord's Day the church was crowded with people eager to hear his powerful preaching. The four searching and edifying sermons in this book are the first published sermons of the minister affectionately and reverentially known as 'Mr Lachlan'. The book also contains a poem by Lachlan MacKenzie and a memoir written by his sister.

The History of the Highland Clearances by Alexander Mackenzie Pdf

The tragedy of the Clearances, brought about by cynical, often absentee landlords, is a black page in Scotland's history. Written while the effects it describes were still unfolding, Mackenzie's history brings the distress before the reader.

Land, Faith and the Crofting Community by Allan W. MacColl Pdf

This book probes the deep-rooted links between the land, the people and the religious culture of the Scottish Highlands and Islands in the nineteenth century. The responses of the clergy to the social crisis which enveloped the region have often been characterised as a mixture of callous indifference, cowering deference or fatalistic passivity. Allan MacColl's pioneering research challenges such stereotypical representations of Highland ministers head-on. Land, Faith and the Crofting Community is the first full-scale examination of Christian social teaching in the nineteenth-century Gaidhealtachd and addresses a major gap in the historical understanding of Gaelic society. Seeking to lay bare the existing myths by a wide-ranging analysis of all the denominational, theological and social factors at play, this study boldly overturns the received scholarly and popular interpretations. A ground-breaking work, it explores a substantial but under-utilised field of evidence and questions whether or not Highland Christians "e; both clergy and laity "e; were committed to land reform as an engine of social improvement and conciliation. The Christian contribution to the development of a distinctively Highland identity "e; which found expression during the Crofters' War of the 1880s "e; is delineated, while wider links between theology and social philosophy are examined from beyond the perspective of the Highlands.
