L'autore analizza l'evoluzione di tali tradizioni, includendo i luoghi di ritrovo e le feste, le sagre e gli appuntamenti legati al culto della Taranta. From Barbarians to New Men : Greek, Roman, and Modern Perceptions of Peoples from the Central Apennines by Emma Dench Pdf

The Central Apennine peoples, represented alternately as decadent and dangerous snake-charming barbarians or as personifications of manly wisdom and virtue, as austere and worthy "new men", were important figures in Greek and Roman ideology. Concentrating on the period between the later fourth century BC and the aftermath of the Social War, this book considers the ways in which Greek and Roman perceptions of these peoples developed, reflecting both the shifting needs of Greek and Roman societies and the character of interaction between the various cultures of ancient Italy. Most importantly, it illuminates the development of a specifically Roman identity, through the creation of an ideology of incorporation. The book is also about the interface between these attitudes and the dynamics of the perception of local communities in Italy of themselves, illuminated by both literary and archaeological evidence. An important new contribution to modern debates on Greek and Roman perceptions of other peoples, the book argues that the closely interactive conditions of ancient Italy helped to produce far less distanced and exotic images than those of the barbarians in fifth-century Athenian thought.

Snake by Erica Wright Pdf

Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Feared and worshiped in equal measure, snakes have captured the imagination of poets, painters, and philosophers for centuries. From Ice Age cave drawings to Snakes on a Plane, this creature continues to enthrall the public. But what harm has been caused by our mythologizing? While considering the dangers of stigma, Erica Wright moves from art and pop culture to religion, fetish, and ecologic disaster. This book considers how the snake has become more symbol than animal, a metaphor for how we treat whatever scares us the most, whether or not our panic is justified. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in the The Atlantic.

Ignazio Silone by Maria Nicolai Paynter Pdf

Throughout his life, the internationally known novelist, short story writer, and journalist, Ignazio Silone (1900-1978) struggled indomitably for social justice. In this book, Maria Nicolai Paynter discusses the many controversial issues surrounding Silone and his writing, analysing in detail his intellectual and political convictions and assesses the artistic achievement and stylistic development in his works. Paynter argues that a profound authenticity is at the core of Silone's writing and that his tragic vision emanates from a concepte of heroism based not on pride and self-serving defiance but rather on moral courage and integrity. Northrop Frye's archetypal criticism and his concept of ironic myth provide the theoretical framework through which Paynter guides the reader to an understanding of Silone's particular brand of realism and his unique message. Ignazio Silone: Beyond the Tragic Visionis a new, expanded version in English of an earlier Italian-language book which won the Premio Internazionale Letterario Ignazio Silone. It is the first comprehensive book in English on Silone's life, his writings, and their critical reception.

Women, Pilgrimage, and Rituals of Healing in Modern and Ancient Greece by Evy Johanne Håland Pdf

This book investigates religious rituals and gender in modern and ancient Greece, with a specific focus on women’s role in connection with healing. How can we come to understand such mainstays of ancient culture as its healing rituals, when the male recorders did not, and could not, know or say much about what occurred, since the rituals were carried out by women? The book proposes that one way of tackling this dilemma is to attend similar healing rituals in modern Greece, carried out by women, and compare the information with ancient sources, thus providing new ways of interpreting the ancient material we possess. Carrying out fieldwork—being present during, often, enduring rituals within cultures, despite other changes—teaches one whole new ways of looking at written and pictorial records of such events. By bringing ancient and modern worlds into mutual illumination, this text also has relevance beyond the Greek context both in time and space.
