Seven Pillars by Michael Rubin,Brian Katulis Pdf

For decades, US foreign policy in the Middle East has been on autopilot: Seek Arab-Israeli peace, fight terrorism, and urge regimes to respect human rights. Every US administration puts its own spin on these initiatives, but none has successfully resolved the region’s fundamental problems. In Seven Pillars: What Really Causes Instability in the Middle East? a bipartisan group of leading experts representing several academic and policy disciplines unravel the core causes of instability in the Middle East and North Africa. Why have some countries been immune to the Arab Spring? Which governments enjoy the most legitimacy and why? With more than half the region under 30 years of age, why does education and innovation lag? How do resource economies, crony capitalism, and inequality drive conflict? Are ethnic and sectarian fault lines the key factor, or are these more products of political and economic instability? And what are the wellsprings of extremism that threaten not only the United States but, more profoundly, the people of the region? The answers to these questions should help policymakers and students of the region understand the Middle East on its own terms, rather than just through a partisan or diplomatic lens. Understanding the pillars of instability in the region can allow the United States and its allies to rethink their own priorities, adjust policy, recalibrate their programs, and finally begin to chip away at core challenges facing the Middle East. Seven Pillars of Science by John Gribbin Pdf

John Gribbin, author of Six Impossible Things, shortlisted for the Royal Society Insight Investment Science Book Prize, presents a tour of seven fundamental scientific truths that underpin our very existence. These 'pillars of science' also defy common sense. For example, solid things are mostly empty space, so how do they hold together? There appears to be no special 'life force', so how do we distinguish living things from inanimate objects? And why does ice float on water, when most solids don't? You might think that question hardly needs asking, and yet if ice didn't float, life on Earth would never have happened. The answers to all of these questions were sensational in their day, and some still are. Throughout history, science has been able to think the unthinkable - and Gribbin brilliantly shows the surprising secrets on which our understanding of life is based.

The Young T. E. Lawrence by Anthony Sattin Pdf

An intimate biography of the years that turned T. E. Lawrence into Lawrence of Arabia. Lawrence of Arabia's heroism during the Arab revolt and his disgust at the subsequent betrayal of the Arabs in the postwar negotiations have become the stuff of legend. But T. E. Lawrence’s adventures in the Levant began long before the outbreak of war. This intimate biography is the first to focus on Lawrence in his twenties, the untold story of the awkward archaeologist from Oxford who, on first visiting "The East," fell in love with Arab culture and found his life's mission. Few people realize that Lawrence’s classic autobiography, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, was not the first book to carry that iconic title. Lawrence himself burned his original draft. Anthony Sattin here uncovers the story Lawrence wanted to conceal: the truth of his birth, his tortuous relationship with a dominant mother, his deep affection for an Arab boy, and the personal reasons that drove him from student to spy. Drawing on surviving letters, diaries, and accounts from close confidantes, Sattin brings a biographer’s eye for detail and a travel writer's verve to Lawrence's extraordinary journeys through the region with which his name is forever connected. In a masterful parallel narrative, The Young T. E. Lawrence charts the maturation of the man and the incipient countries he treasured, both coming of age at a time when the world’s foundations were coming undone.

The Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom by Stephen M. Stigler Pdf

What gives statistics its unity as a science? Stephen Stigler sets forth the seven foundational ideas of statistics—a scientific discipline related to but distinct from mathematics and computer science. Even the most basic idea—aggregation, exemplified by averaging—is counterintuitive. It allows one to gain information by discarding information, namely, the individuality of the observations. Stigler’s second pillar, information measurement, challenges the importance of “big data” by noting that observations are not all equally important: the amount of information in a data set is often proportional to only the square root of the number of observations, not the absolute number. The third idea is likelihood, the calibration of inferences with the use of probability. Intercomparison is the principle that statistical comparisons do not need to be made with respect to an external standard. The fifth pillar is regression, both a paradox (tall parents on average produce shorter children; tall children on average have shorter parents) and the basis of inference, including Bayesian inference and causal reasoning. The sixth concept captures the importance of experimental design—for example, by recognizing the gains to be had from a combinatorial approach with rigorous randomization. The seventh idea is the residual: the notion that a complicated phenomenon can be simplified by subtracting the effect of known causes, leaving a residual phenomenon that can be explained more easily. The Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom presents an original, unified account of statistical science that will fascinate the interested layperson and engage the professional statistician.

The Bible's Seven Pillars of Wisdom by David Hamshire Pdf

The seven pillars of wisdom in Proverbs 9:1–6 deal with preparing a meal. Seven Pillars of Wisdom •1. Wisdom has selected a life to be slain. •2. She has chosen the wine. •3. Wisdom’s table has been furnished. •4. Her servants announce from the highest places of the city: “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” •5. Her servants invite others to attend, including, “Him who lacks understanding.” •6. She commands: “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed.” •7. Wisdom’s finale is: “Forsake foolishness and live, and go in the way of understanding.” These seven pillars have a vivid similarity to the Bible’s first account of Creation and the seven festivals of the Lord (the Jewish people’s seven annual festivals.

The Seven Pillars of Fatherhood by Donald H. Wood Ph.D Pdf

Much has been written about the role of a good father and the importance of a father in his children’s lives. However, in my opinion, little if any has been written about what are the fundamental attributes that make up a good or, what I like to call, a real father. I think that these fundamental attributes can be summed up with seven key traits or pillars as I like to refer to them. These fundamental truths or attributes known as the seven pillars (Ps) of fatherhood encompass the following key attributes: P1: Pilot. A real father is a man who knows how to lead (navigate) his children and family through the storms of life. P2: Provider. A real father is able to provide for his children with adequate shelter, food, and clothing. P3: Protector. A real father knows how to protect his children from the predators of life. P4: Preparer. A real father knows how to prepare and teach his children how to be self-sufficient and independent. P5: Praise. A real father knows how to instill self-esteem in his children through encouragement, support, and affirmation. P6: Patience. A real father is meek and slow to anger. He knows the difference between alienating his children and how to firmly direct his children in the right direction. P7: Prays. A real father knows how to be a prayer warrior on behalf of his children. By embracing and utilizing the seven pillars of fatherhood, all fathers or father figures will reap the benefits of successfully raising children who will be ready to take on the challenges of life. The way in which a man fathers his children can mean the difference between him finding great joy from his children in the future or great sorrow.
