Severn and Somme by Ivor Gurney Pdf

LIVING we loved you, yet withheld our praisesBefore your faces; And though we had your spirits high in honour,After the English mannerWe said no word. Yet, as such comrades would,You understood.Such friendship is not touched by Death's disaster,But stands the faster; And all the shocks and trials of time cannotShake it one jot.Beside the fire at night some far December,We shall rememberAnd tell men, unbegotten as yet, the storyOf your sad glory--Of your plain strength, your truth of heart, your splendidCoolness, all ended! All ended, ... yet the aching hearts of loversJoy overcovers,Glad in their sorrow; hoping that if they mustCome to the dust,An ending such as yours may be their portion,And great good fortune--That if we may not live to serve in peaceEngland, watching increase--Then death with you, honoured, and swift, and high; And so--not die.IN TRENCHES, July 1916.GOD, that I might seeFramilode once again!Redmarley, all renewed,Clear shining after rain. And Cranham, Cranham trees,And blaze of Autumn hues.Portway under the moon,Silvered with freezing dews.May Hill that Gloster dwellers'Gainst every sunset see;And the wide Severn riverHoming again to the sea.The star of afterglow,Venus, on western hills;Dymock in spring: O springOf home! O daffodils! And Malvern's matchless hugeBastions of ancient fires--These will not let me rest,So hot my heart desires....Here we go sore of shoulder,Sore of foot, by quiet streams; But these are not my rivers....And these are useless dreams.

Severn Somme (Classic Reprint) by Ivor Gurney Pdf

Excerpt from Severn Somme To my father and mother; F. W. Harvey (also a Gloucestershire lad) Miss Marion Scott, whose criticism has been so useful, and she so kind, in spite of my continued refusal to alter a word of anything the Vicar of Twigworth Herbert Howells (and this is not the last time you will hear of him) Mr. Hilaire Belloc, whose Path to Rome has been my trench companion, with The Spirit of Man Mr. Wilfred Gibson, author of Friends, a great little book many others also, including Shakespeare and Bach, both friends of mine; and, last but not least, my comrades of two platoons of the Gloucesters, who so often have wondered whether I were crazy or not. Let them draw their own conclusions now, for the writing of this book it was that so distracted me. This is a long list, and even now does not include old Mrs. Poyner, who was so jolly and long-suffering. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dweller in Shadows by Kate Kennedy Pdf

The first comprehensive biography of an extraordinary English poet and composer whose life was haunted by fighting in the First World War and, later, confinement in a mental asylum Ivor Gurney (1890–1937) wrote some of the most anthologized poems of the First World War and composed some of the greatest works in the English song repertoire, such as “Sleep.” Yet his life was shadowed by the trauma of the war and mental illness, and he spent his last fifteen years confined to a mental asylum. In Dweller in Shadows, Kate Kennedy presents the first comprehensive biography of this extraordinary and misunderstood artist. A promising student at the Royal College of Music, Gurney enlisted as a private with the Gloucestershire regiment in 1915 and spent two years in the trenches of the Western Front. Wounded in the arm and subsequently gassed during the Battle of Passchendaele, Gurney was recovering in hospital when his first collection of poems, Severn and Somme, was published. Despite episodes of depression, he resumed his music studies after the war until he was committed to an asylum in 1922. At times believing he was Shakespeare and that the “machines under the floor” were torturing him, he nevertheless continued to write and compose, leaving behind a vast body of unpublished work when he died of tuberculosis. Drawing on extensive archival research and spanning literary criticism, history, psychiatry and musicology, this compelling narrative sets Gurney’s life and work against the backdrop of the war and his institutionalisation, probing the links between madness, suffering and creativity. Facing death in the trenches, Gurney hoped that history might not “forget me quite.” This definitive account of his life and work helps ensure that he will indeed be remembered.

Modern English War Poetry by Tim Kendall Pdf

Tim Kendall's study offers the fullest account to date of a tradition of modern English war poetry. Stretching from the Boer War to the present day, it focuses on many of the twentieth-century's finest poets - combatants and non-combatants alike - and considers how they address the ethical challenges of making art out of violence. Poetry, we are often told, makes nothing happen. But war makes poetry happen: the war poet cannot regret, and must exalt at, even the most appalling experiences. Modern English War Poetry not only assesses the problematic relationship between war and its poets, it also encourages an urgent reconsideration of the modern poetry canon and the (too often marginalised) position of war poetry within it. The aesthetic and ethical values on which canonical judgements have been based are carefully scrutinized via a detailed analysis of individual poets. The poets discussed include Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Wilfred Owen, Charlotte Mew, Edward Thomas, Ivor Gurney, W. H. Auden, Keith Douglas, Ted Hughes, and Geoffrey Hill.

A History of World War One Poetry by Jane Potter Pdf

Situating First World War poetry in a truly global context, this book reaches beyond the British soldier-poet canon. A History of World War One Poetry examines popular and literary, ephemeral and enduring poems that the cataclysm of 1914-1918 inspired. Across Europe, poets wrestled with the same problem: how to represent a global conflict, dominated by modern technology, involving millions of combatants and countless civilians. For literary scholars this has meant discovering and engaging with the work of men and women writing in other languages, on other fronts, and from different national perspectives. Poems are presented in their original languages and in English translations, some for the very first time, while a Coda reflects on the study and significance of First World War poetry in the wake of the Centenary. A History of World War One Poetry offers a new perspective on the literary and human experience of 1914-1918.

Henry V by Christopher Allmand Pdf

Thanks in part to Shakespeare, Henry V is one of England's best-known monarchs. The image of the king leading his army against the French, and the great victory at Agincourt, are part of English historical tradition. Yet, though indeed a soldier of exceptional skill, Henry V's reputation needs to be seen against a broader background of achievement. This sweepingly majestic book is based on the full range of primary sources and sets the reign in its full European context. Christopher Allmand shows that Henry V not only united the country in war but also provided domestic security, solid government, and a much needed sense of national pride. The book includes an updated foreword which takes stock of more recent publications in the field. "A far more rounded picture of Henry as a ruler than any previous study."--G.L. Harris, The Times
