Sewerage and Land-Drainage (Classic Reprint) by George Edwin Waring Jr Pdf

Excerpt from Sewerage and Land-Drainage Attention will be called to the fact that drainage-works. Past and present, are, and have always been, the outgrowth of tradition, as modified from time to time by a better knowledge Of what it is necessary or desirable to accomplish. The earliest subterranean works, as far as they are still retained in use, were Obviously intended to prevent an interference with the convenient use Of' the surface by open water-courses. Later, as inconvenience was felt from the accumulation Of surface water falling on paved and other impervious surfaces, drains were extended to relieve the difficulty thence resulting. When the introduction of a public water-supply overtaxed existing facilities for the storage or removal Of household wastes. First the superabundant liquid and later the whole foul flow was delivered into the Old drains. Annoyance arising from the discharge Of organic wastes into the rough channels originally intended for surface-water, means were devised for improving the form and construction Of the conduit so as to reduce the amount Of deposit. Still more recently a com prehension Of the sanitary importance of a complete immediate removal of foul wastes led to the construction Of sewers especially for this purpose. In many cases storm-water, except that falling on back roofs and yards, was excluded. The latest step, and, as I think, a very important one, and which - in practice - originated with me. Secured the exclusion even Of this relatively small proportion of storm-water and the substitution of artificial means for keeping the sewers clean by frequent and regular flushing. All sanitarians are agreed that, so far as the removal of foul waste is concerned, whatever the system by which it is effected it should be immediate and complete, and that this principle Of imme diate and complete removal should relate not only to the public sewer, but equally to every element of the tributary system by which waste matters are conveyed from their place of production in the house to the sewer. This calls for the consideration Of the construction Of the appliances from which, or through which, waste refuse is carried from its point of production to the public sewer or to other means of disposal - that is, all that is included under the general head Of house-drainage. As I have discussed this subject somewhat fully in a recent work, * it will be considered here less in detail. Land Drainage (Classic Reprint) by W. L. Powers Pdf

Excerpt from Land Drainage This book deals with the subject of drainage primarily from the agricultural standpoint, and the subject has been developed largely as a matter of applied soil-physics. Drainage is considered herein as a means of reclaiming additional areas and of making wet lands more productive. Reclamation of arid and wet lands affords the chief means of increasing our food producing areas and drawing a greater proportion of our population into the rural districts. The present volume is intended, first, as a text book for students of general agriculture or agricultural engineering; second, as a reference book for practical farmers; and third, as an aid to owners of wet, overflowed, marsh, swamp or alkaline land who desire to improve their holdings. The information presented herein has been gathered by the authors, as farmers, students and instructors, in the Corn Belt States and later in the West, where preliminary feasibility surveys and selection of lands for irrigation projects and drainage projects have been an important feature of our work. Review questions, general references and laboratory exercises have been included to help make up the kind of a book that has seemed to the writers to be needed. On the Drainage of Lands, Towns, and Buildings (Classic Reprint) by George Drysdale Dempsey Pdf

Excerpt from On the Drainage of Lands, Towns, and Buildings The flat stone drains shown in Figs. 45 and 47 are economical forms of construction in some localities, namely, where the required slabs are cheap and abundant. The shoulders, shown in Fig. 47 as being left in the soil, may be in some cases better substituted by clearing the drain out level, and introducing two slabs of stone, meeting at the bottom, and having a stone wedged in between them at the top, the upper portion being filled in with loose stones. If the flat stones at the sides can be obtained 6 or 8 inches broad, and 15 inches thick, at about 4d. Per ton, an acre of land may be drained with drains 32 inches deep below the crowns of the gathered-up ridges, and laid at distances of r 5 feet, at a cost of about £2 1zs., exclusive of carriage of materials, and the ploughing by which the upper ridges are formed. Constructed as in Fig. 47, if the covering flags can be procured 12 inches wide and 2 inches thick, at the same rate per ton, the acre may be similarly drained for 8s. Or os. Less. For the draining of bogs, the arrangement represented in Fig. 49 is peculiarly applicable, all the materials being on the spot, as the whole drain is refilled with the peat itself, which is well known to resist the action of water with impunity. Provided the cutting of the drains be done in summer, when the material quickly becomes dried, and sufficient time is allowed between the successive opera tions cf cutting and refilling to effect the required con solidation, no better method is yet devised for effecting this kind of work. The liability of the mess in the bed of the drain to subside in detached parts, and with great irregularity, is certain to destroy any arrangement of tiles, pipes, or other artificial materials. House Drainage Manual by William Spinks Pdf

Excerpt from House Drainage Manual: A Guide to the Design and Construction of Systems of Drainage and Sewage Disposal From Houses A complete treatise on drainage would be of the nature of a trilogy, in that it would have to discuss phenomena at the entrant end of the system, in the connecting ducts, and at the exit end. Each of these divisions can, however, with advantage be treated separately, and this book is the outcome of an effort to consider in the light of modern knowledge more especially the principles to be followed in the proper designing and the apparatus connected with the due construction of' the entrant end of a drainage system. Reference has necessarily been made to the other parts of a system in order to obtain a better understanding of that which has been treated more fully. The preparation of even a short work of this kind takes considerable time, and in these days of rapid progress there must necessarily be apparatus that remains undescribed. The great point to be aimed at is a clear conception of the principles to be followed. The reader having obtained such knowledge will be able to discriminate between the various apparatus as to which is most suitable for any specific purpose. In order to make the work of greater service to property owners and leaseholders, comprehensive chapters have been added on the law relating to house drainage. Excerpt from Tile Drainage: An Explanation of How and Why Tile Will Benefit a Large Percentage of Our Lands and Increase Our Incomes; Together With Instructions for the Proper Installation of an Efficient Tile Drain Age System Drainage is of two kinds. Sanitary drainage, or sewage disposal, is the drainage of surplus water and liquid wastes from cities and towns for sanitary reasons. Land drainage is the removal of surplus surface or soil water from land to make it available for farm uses. Sanitary drainage or sewage disposal is as old as is the habit of human beings to live in settled communities or towns. The earliest known method of sanitary drainage was by means of open surface ditches.
