A CHILD OF THE JAGO (Modern Classics Series) by Arthur Morrison Pdf

This carefully crafted ebook: “A CHILD OF THE JAGO (Modern Classics Series)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. A Child of the Jago recounts the brief life of Dicky Perrott, a child growing up in the "Old Jago", a fictionalization of the Old Nichol, a slum located between Shoreditch High Street and Bethnal Green Road in the East End of London. The Jago is a London slum where crime and violence are the only way of life, and from which there is no escape for the inhabitants. At the start of the novel Dicky Perrott is about 8 years old, undernourished and roaming the streets, forced to do whatever it takes in order to survive. Dicky's affectionate nature and willingness to work provides a glimmer of hope that he can escape from the corruption of the Jago, but this hope is cynically thwarted by the avaricious Weech. The criminalizing of innocence in an environment of poverty and crime echoes the predicament of Oliver Twist. Arthur Morrison (1863-1945) was an English writer and journalist known for his realistic novels and stories about working-class life in London's East End, A Child of the Jago being the best known. Morrison is also known for his detective stories, featuring the detective Martin Hewitt, low-key, realistic, lower class answer to Sherlock Holmes. Martin Hewitt stories are similar in style to those of Conan Doyle, cleverly plotted and very amusing, while the character himself is a bit less arrogant and a bit more charming than Holmes.

Aller Retour New York: Essay (New Directions Revived Modern Classics) by Henry Miller Pdf

Aller Retour New York is truly vintage Henry Miller, written during his most creative period, between Tropic of Cancer (1934) and Tropic of Capricorn (1939). Aller Retour New York is truly vintage Henry Miller, written during his most creative period, between Tropic of Cancer (1934) and Tropic of Capricorn (1939). Miller always said that his best writing was in his letters, and this unbuttoned missive to his friend Alfred Perles is not only his longest (nearly 80 pages!) but his best—an exuberant, rambling, episodic, humorous account of his visit to New York in 1935 and return to Europe aboard a Dutch ship. Despite its high repute among Miller devotees, Aller Retour New York has never been easy to find. It was first brought out in Paris in 1935 in a limited edition, and a second edition, “Printed for Private Circulation Only,” was issued in the United States ten years later. It is now available in paperback as a Revived Modern Classic, with an introduction by George Wickes that illuminates the people and personal circumstances which inform Aller Retour New York.

IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME - Complete 7 Book Collection (Modern Classics Series) by Marcel Proust Pdf

This carefully crafted ebook: "IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME - Complete 7 Book Collection (Modern Classics Series)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. In Search of Lost Time is a series of seven highly acclaimed novels which inspired modern writers with its artistic craft and philosophical insight regarding memory and time. It is often suggested that perhaps Joyce's Ulysses was in some way inspired by this French tour de force. These bestselling novels recount the experiences of an unnamed narrator while he is growing up, learning about art, participating in society, and falling in love. Swann's Way: The young protagonist dreads waking up at night and not having his mother's good-night kiss... Within a Budding Grove beautifully examines the complex adolescent relationships. The Guermantes Way: The adult protagonist steps into the dazzling Parisian society of 19th century along with his obsession for Mme. de Guermantes. Cities of Plain: No matter how hard he tries to ignore or stay indifferent to closeted homosexual relationships around him, these and his own sexual desires become intricate part of his memories. The Captive dwells into the nature of relationships when couples fall out of love and yet don't have courage to break free. The Sweet Cheat Gone: People who leave rarely come back... Time Regained: After the WW1, he goes back to Paris to meet the people he once knew again, but time has never stopped for anyone Marcel Proust (1871–1922) was an inspirational French novelist, critic and essayist who is now considered as one of the most influential authors of the 20th century. His aesthetic craft and deep philosophical insight inspired numerous modern writers.
