The Ploy of Instinct by Kathleen Frederickson Pdf

It is paradoxical that instinct became a central term for late Victorian sexual sciences as they were elaborated in the medicalized spaces of confession and introspection, given that instinct had long been defined in its opposition to self-conscious thought. The Ploy of Instinct ties this paradox to instinct’s deployment in conceptualizing governmentality. Instinct’s domain, Frederickson argues, extended well beyond the women, workers, and “savages” to whom it was so often ascribed. The concept of instinct helped to gloss over contradictions in British liberal ideology made palpable as turn-of-the-century writers grappled with the legacy of Enlightenment humanism. For elite European men, instinct became both an agent of “progress” and a force that, in contrast to desire, offered a plenitude in answer to the alienation of self-consciousness. This shift in instinct’s appeal to privileged European men modified the governmentality of empire, labor, and gender. The book traces these changes through parliamentary papers, pornographic fiction, accounts of Aboriginal Australians, suffragette memoirs, and scientific texts in evolutionary theory, sexology, and early psychoanalysis.

One of the survivors is bitten by a mutated creature and begins showing signs of infection, forcing the group to make a difficult decision on whether to quarantine or eliminate the threat. A rival faction of survivors emerges, challenging the group's claim to a valuable resource-rich territory and igniting a dangerous conflict that threatens to tear them apart. A charismatic leader from a neighboring settlement offers alliance to the group, but his true intentions remain unclear as they must navigate the delicate balance of trust and betrayal. A lone wanderer stumbles upon the group, claiming to have knowledge of a safe haven beyond the wasteland, but his cryptic warnings hint at a darker truth that could endanger them all. A series of mysterious disappearances rock the survivor community, causing paranoia and suspicion to run rampant as they race to uncover the truth before it's too late. The group uncovers a hidden cache of precious resources that could secure their survival but must decide how to distribute them fairly among themselves and the surrounding settlements. A devastating natural disaster strikes the wasteland, forcing the survivors to adapt to new challenges and threats while testing the limits of their resilience and determination to overcome adversity.

Killer Instinct by S. E. Green Pdf

A teen girl version of Dexter meets the high stakes danger and mystery of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in this “unique, beautifully twisted, and rich” (#1 New York Times bestselling author, Jennifer L. Armentrout) debut. Lane is a typical teenager. Loving family. Good grades. After-school job at the local animal hospital. Martial arts enthusiast. But her secret obsession is studying serial killers. She understands them, knows what makes them tick. Why? Because she might be one herself. Lane channels her dark impulses by hunting criminals and delivering justice when the law fails. The vigilantism stops shy of murder, but with each visceral rush, the line of self-control blurs. And when a young preschool teacher goes missing—and returns in pieces—Lane gets a little too excited about tracking down “the Decapitator,” the vicious serial murderer who has come to her hometown. As she gets dangerously caught up in a web of lies about her own past, Lane realizes she is no longer invisible or safe. Especially after the Decapitator contacts her directly. Now she needs to use her unique talents to find the true killer’s identity before she—or someone she loves—becomes the next victim…

Phantom Instinct by Meg Gardiner Pdf

In Edgar Award–winning author Meg Gardiner’s new stand-alone thriller, an injured cop and an ex-thief hunt down a killer nobody else believes exists. When shots ring out in a crowded L.A. club, bartender Harper Flynn watches helplessly as her boyfriend, Drew, is gunned down in the cross fire. Then somebody throws a Molotov cocktail, and the club is quickly engulfed in flames. L.A. Sheriff Deputy Aiden Garrison sees a gunman in a hoodie and gas mask taking aim at Harper, but before he can help her a wall collapses, bringing the building down and badly injuring him. A year later, Harper is trying to rebuild her life. She has quit her job and gone back to college. Meanwhile, the investigation into the shoot-out has been closed. The two gunmen were killed when the building collapsed. Certain that a third gunman escaped and is targeting the survivors, Harper enlists the help of Aiden Garrison, the only person willing to listen. But the traumatic brain injury he suffered has cut his career short and left him with Fregoli syndrome, a rare type of face blindness that causes the delusion that random people are actually a single person changing disguises. As Harper and Aiden delve into the case, Harper realizes that her presence during the attack was no coincidence—and that her only ally is unstable, mistrustful of her, and seeing the same enemy everywhere he looks.
