Shakespeare in the Eighteenth Century (Classic Reprint) by David Nichol Smith Pdf

Excerpt from Shakespeare in the Eighteenth Century At no time since his death has Shakespeare not been placed upon a pinnacle by himself as the greatest of all English writers. But each age has its own point of View, its own special interests, its characteristic method of treatment; and no age can ever say the last word on anything that is a living and life-giving force. Say the last word on Shakespeare, and Shakespeare is dead. There can never be finality in the criticism of a great author. The truth and the beauty embodied in his work exercise the taste and the acumen of one critic, and remain undiminished and untarnished for the next. All the best criticism of the present day. Eighteenth Century Essays on Shakespeare (Classic Reprint) by David Nichol Smith Pdf

Excerpt from Eighteenth Century Essays on Shakespeare The purpose of this book is to give an account of Shakespeare's reputation during the eighteenth century, and to suggest that there are grounds for reconsidering the common opinion that the century did not give him his due. The nine Essays or Prefaces here reprinted may claim to represent the chief phases of Shakespearian study from the days of Dryden to those of Coleridge. It is one of the evils following in the train of the romantic revival that the judgments of the older school have been discredited or forgotten. The present volume shows that the eighteenth century knew many things which the nineteenth has rediscovered for itself. It is at least eighty years since most of these essays were reprinted. Rowe's Account of Shakespeare is given in its original and complete form for the first time, it is believed, since 1714; what was printed in the early Variorum editions, and previously in almost every edition since 1725, was Pope's version of Rowe's Account. Dennis's Essay has not appeared since the author republished it in 1721. In all cases the texts have been collated with the originals; and the more important changes in the editions published in the lifetime of the author are indicated in the Introduction or Notes. Shakespeare and His Critics (Classic Reprint) by Charles F. Johnson Pdf

Excerpt from Shakespeare and His Critics The critics of the eighteenth century were largely occupied with endeavors to establish a standard text by emendation and conjecture. Quite generally they looked at the plays from the standpoint of the theatre, ignor ing the idea that the tragedies were commentaries on human nature and possessed an absolute quality like truth or beauty. Dr. Johnson is typical of this class, if he is not too extreme an instance of common sense to be typical of that excellent quality. Though these critics rebelled rather timidly against slavish obedience to the authority of 'the ancients, ' the idea that the author was an untutored, natural genius, who would have been much improved by a university training, was not fully eradicated. The true nature of art was not philosophically grasped, and the profound relation of the plays to life was but dimly hinted at. The idea that the characters could be discussed exactly as if they were real, that they differed from historic characters in pos sessing more interesting personalities, in being placed in more complicated and trying situations, and, there fore, exemplifying more fully the passions of men, did not occur to the critics till very late in the eighteenth century. Nor was it discovered till towards the close of the eighteenth century that Shakespeare's female characters bear almost as close a relation to feminine nature as his heroes do to manly nature. In fact, both of these views may be said to belong to the romantic school of the nineteenth century. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Shakespeare (Classic Reprint) by Raymond MacDonald Alden Pdf

Excerpt from Shakespeare I hope it may not be judged an incompetent plea, in defense of the act of writing another book on Shakespeare, that the author had not meditated such a deed when it was proposed to him by the editor of the present series. On reflection, however, it seemed that there might be some justification of so agreeable an imprudence, even on the part of one who had no Shakespearean theories to propose, - or perhaps for that very reason. In the first place, some need has been felt for a compendium of the known facts respecting Shakespeare, and of the prevailing critical judgments of modern scholarship, sufficiently untechnical for the purposes of the general reader, and at the same time uncolored by any desire to prove a case. In the second place, the history of Shakespeare criticism has perhaps reached a point where one may profitably attempt some restatement of the main issues involved in the effort to adv just our view of a world-genius, whose values are absolute and timeless, to the special relationship which his work bore to his immediate audience and age. The latter point deserves some further comment. The course of Shakespeare criticism, which began in anything like a formal way with the age of Dryden, may be roughly divided into three periods. Shakespeare's Life and Work by Sidney Lee Pdf

Excerpt from Shakespeare's Life and Work: Being an Abridgment, Chiefly for the Use of Students, of a Life of William Shakespeare This work is a reprint, with some omissions and abbreviations, of the author's 'Life of William Shakespeare, ' and is designed for the use of students and general readers who seek a complete and accurate account of the great dramatists career and achievement in a small space at a moderate cost. The aim of the volume is to present, in language as terse and definite as possible, the net results of trustworthy research respecting Shakespeare's life and writings. In regard to topics of controversy the author confines himself to a statement of his final conclusions, and ventures to refer to the unabbreviated editions of the book all who desire to examine the grounds on which those conclusions are based. The footnotes in the larger editions give ample references to original authorities and discuss in detail points of doubt and difficulty; but although these footnotes are now omitted, the more pertinent pieces of illustrative information which they contain are incorporated in the present text. In accordance, too, with the distinctive scheme of this volume, the chapters which in former editions dealt at length with the character and significance of Shakespeare's sonnets have been greatly abridged, and those sections of the Appendix which were deemed essential to the exhaustive discussion of the subject have been excluded. Shakespeare's a Midsummer-Night's Dream by William Shakespeare Pdf

Excerpt from Shakespeare's a Midsummer-Night's Dream: Edited With Introduction and Notes The Introductions are written with more freedom. They are full, and so far as they have a common spirit it is a spirit of inquiry. No question of history or criticism has been treated dogmatically when it could be treated otherwise. There is indeed no part of literary history where dogma is less in place. It is impossible for any editor of Shakespeare to write a preface without remembering his debts. There are parts of these Introductions where I am conscious of no obligation, but wherever scholarship or learning or interpretation was needed I have found my best guides in the eighteenth-century editors, in Dr. Aldis Wright, and in the Oxford Dictionary. First Readers of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, 1590-1790 by Faith D. Acker Pdf

For more than four centuries, cultural preferences, literary values, critical contexts, and personal tastes have governed readers’ responses to Shakespeare’s sonnets. Early private readers often considered these poems in light of the religious, political, and humanist values by which they lived. Other seventeenth- and eighteenth- century readers, such as stationers and editors, balanced their personal literary preferences against the imagined or actual interests of the literate public to whom they marketed carefully curated editions of the sonnets, often successfully. Whether public or private, however, many disparate sonnet interpretations from the sonnets’ first two centuries in print have been overlooked by modern sonnet scholarship, with its emphasis on narrative and amorous readings of the 1609 sequence. First Readers of Shakespeare’s Sonnets reintroduces many early readings of Shakespeare’s sonnets, arguing that studying the priorities and interpretations of these previous readers expands the modern critical applications of these poems, thereby affording them numerous future applications. This volume draws upon book history, manuscript studies, and editorial theory to recover four lost critical approaches to the sonnets, highlighting early readers’ interests in Shakespeare’s classical adaptations, political applicability, religious themes, and rhetorical skill during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Excerpt from Tragedy of Macbeth: With Introduction, and Notes Explanatory and Critical; For Use in Schools and Classes 'the text of this edition of Macbeth is based upon a collation of the seventeenth century Folios, the Globe edi tion, and that of Delius. As compared with the text of the earlier editions of the Hudson Shakespeare, it is conservative. These notes are printed immediately below the text so that a reader or student may see at a glance the evidence in the case of a disputed reading and have some definite understanding of the reasons for those differences in the text of Shakespeare which frequently surprise and very Often annoy. Mr. William Shakespeare by Henrietta C. Bartlett Pdf

Excerpt from Mr. William Shakespeare: Original and Early Editions of His Quartos and Folios, His Source Books and Those Containing Contemporary Notices The Exhibition of which this is the catalogue was made possible by the generosity of a number of collectors of New York and other places in the United States. Their cooperation has resulted in this remarkable collection of Shake-speareana. The British Museum owns the best single collection of the kind, but it has not all of the books presented here, nor can it bring together for a loan exhibition such a collection as this. The reason is that nearly all the important collections of Shakespeare's works in England are in public institutions and cannot be lent to form one exhibition. The introduction to the Census of Shakespeare's Plays in Quarto mentions the difference in ownership and location of Shakespeare's works in England and in America. In England Shakespeare's works are chiefly in public collections where they may be examined by the student, but may not be withdrawn for exhibition or study elsewhere. In America they are chiefly in the libraries of private collectors whose generosity affords opportunities for the public like the present one. Unfortunately, there are in America but three public collections which contain Shakespeare's works of sufficient value to form the basis of an exhibition. These are in the Boston Public Library, which contains the Barton Collection, in the Elizabethan Club of Yale University, with its famous Huth quartos, and in The New York Public Library, with its Lenox Collection. The Lenox Collection is the basis of this exhibition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
