Shakespeare - The Disturbing World of Richard III and Edmund by Tanja Lins Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 90% (High Distinction-highest), Monash University Melbourne (School of Literature), course: Shakespeare- Interpretations and Transmutations, 16 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: 'Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this sun of York' (Richard III, 1.1.1). The famous opening scene of the 'history play' Richard III is known throughout the world and not a few spectators have been fascinated by the character of Richard described by Greenblatt as the 'monster of evil' or the 'virtual devil incarnate' (1997, p.507). In the play itself, Richard is characterized by Margaret as 'elvish-marked, abortive rooting hog' (1.3.227). The play focuses on Richard, who murders his way to the crown. Shakespeare's Edmund in King Lear shows as well a high amount of ruthlessness. Greenblatt, again, states that 'language' and 'social order' are 'merely arbitrary constraints' or 'obstacles' in the way of the 'triumph of his will' (1997, p.2309). He 'seethes' with 'murderous resentment' over the advantages of his brother Edgar, who is a legitimate child (Cohen 1997, p.2309). Whilst generally agreeing on the villainy of both characters, scholarly attention given to them has been generally less convergent over the years. According to Oestreich-Hart (2000), Richard has been described as an 'intrepid warrior', a 'comic or satirical Vice', a diabolic Machiavel', 'a heartless villain of Senecan melodrama', 'a proficient rhetorican' or even a 'spurned child' (p.242). Edmund, the subplot character of King Lear, has been described as 'a most vile' (Utterback 1976, p.203) or 'most toad-spotted traitor' (5.3.137). Due to the fact that both characters show tendencies making them extremely atrocious and unpredictable, the aim of the essay, in contrast, is to explore the idea of Richard and Edward (Folio- version) being psychopaths according to our un

Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare (Anniversary Edition) by Stephen Greenblatt Pdf

Named One of Esquire's 50 Best Biographies of All Time The Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, reissued with a new afterword for the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. A young man from a small provincial town moves to London in the late 1580s and, in a remarkably short time, becomes the greatest playwright not of his age alone but of all time. How is an achievement of this magnitude to be explained? Stephen Greenblatt brings us down to earth to see, hear, and feel how an acutely sensitive and talented boy, surrounded by the rich tapestry of Elizabethan life, could have become the world’s greatest playwright.

King Richard Iii by William Shakespeare Pdf

Stopping at nothing in his evil obsession for the throne, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, schemes and betrays, deceives and murders as he sees fit. Rarely has Shakespeare created a character that is at the same time so intelligent and evil, so despicable and fascinating. In order to wrest the crown from his brother Edward IV he conspires to have his other brother George charged with treason, arrested and murdered. This is enough to kill the severely ill King leaving Richard to serve as regent until the King's heirs are of age. To strengthen his own claim to the throne Richard woos Lady Anne the widow of the also murdered Prince of Wales. The opposition soon forms and the last Lancastrian heir Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, leads an army from France against Richard. Disturbing and enthralling, Richard III is a gripping tragedy and one of Shakespeare's enduring successes.

An Introduction to Literature, Criticism and Theory by Andrew Bennett,Nicholas Royle Pdf

Lively, original and highly readable, An Introduction to Literature, Criticism and Theory is the essential guide to literary studies. Starting at ‘The Beginning’ and concluding with ‘The End’, chapters range from the familiar, such as ‘Character’, ‘Narrative’ and ‘The Author’, to the more unusual, such as ‘Secrets’, ‘Pleasure’ and ‘Ghosts’. Now in its fifth edition, Bennett and Royle’s classic textbook successfully illuminates complex ideas by engaging directly with literary works, so that a reading of Jane Eyre opens up ways of thinking about racial difference, for example, while Chaucer, Raymond Chandler and Monty Python are all invoked in a discussion of literature and laughter. The fifth edition has been revised throughout and includes four new chapters – ‘Feelings’, ‘Wounds’, ‘Body’ and ‘Love’ – to incorporate exciting recent developments in literary studies. In addition to further reading sections at the end of each chapter, the book contains a comprehensive bibliography and a glossary of key literary terms. A breath of fresh air in a field that can often seem dry and dauntingly theoretical, this book will open the reader’s eyes to the exhilarating possibilities of reading and studying literature.

Shakespeare's History Plays: Richard II to Henry V, the Making of a King by C W R D Moseley Pdf

Part I provides some contexts for what is inevitably our reading of the history plays, so that perhaps we may guess at the impact they may have had on their contemporaries. The author suggests, by implication, a way of approaching Elizabethan drama that may be generally useful. Part II is a consideration of what the author thinks are some major issues in the Ricardian plays.

The language and characters are thoroughly analyzed and lucidity explained to persuade the reader that many commonly held assumptions did not do justice to the drama's intentions. Graham Holderness has written many books including "Who's Who in D.H. Lawrence", "Shakespeare's History", "Shakespeare in Performance: The Taming of the Shrew" and "Romeo and Juliet".
