One Sun, One Shadow by Shane Lavalette Pdf

Shane Lavalette was commissioned by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta to create a new series of photographs for their 2012 exhibition, "Picturing the South." Lavalette's highly anticipated monograph, One Sun, One Shadow, is an extension of this body of work. Native to the Northeast, it was primarily through traditional music -- the sounds of old time, blues, and gospel -- that Lavalette had formed a relationship with the South. With that in mind, the region's rich musical history became the natural entry point for this project and the resulting photographs. Moved by the themes and stories past down in songs, Lavalette let the music itself carry the pictures. One Sun, One Shadow includes a text by artist and poet Tim Davis.

About eighty years ago, the same communities were photographed by Swissh photographer Theo Frey for the 1939 Swiss National Exhibition (Schwizerische Landesausstellung). American Origami by Anonim Pdf

American Origami? is the result of six years of photographic research by Andres Gonzalez. The project closely examines the epidemic of mass shootings in American schools, interweaving first-person interviews, forensic documents, press materials, and original photographs. The book takes its reader through a visual journey of shared grief and atonement to illuminate moments of beauty and pose moral questions embedded in acts of collective healing. Bound in a unique way, the varied elements repeat and fold into each other, creating a parallel world of past and present, and showing the silenced landscape together with the personal artefacts created by those left behind.

Dog Days Bogotá by Alec Soth Pdf

After completing the shooting of Sleeping by the Mississippi in 2002, Alec Soth traveled to Bogot, Colombia to adopt a baby girl. While the courts processed paperwork, he and his wife spent two months in the capital city waiting to take their new baby home. "The baby's birth mother gave the new parents a book filled with letters, pictures and poems. I hope that the hardness of the world will not hurt your sensitivity," she wrote, "When I think about you I hope that your life is full of beautiful things." With these words as a mission statement, Soth began making his own book for his daughter. Soth writes, "In photographing the city of her birth, I hope I've described some of the beauty in this hard place." Beauty makes itself known through ramshackle architecture, the companionship of animals, and the perseverance of the human spirit. Yet, in Dog Days, Bogot, Soth's photographs transcend the simple description of beauty and poetically roam through a cast of strays, tough souls, and hints of hope. Alec Soth, born in 1969, is a photographer born and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the recipient of several major fellowships from the McKnight and Jerome Foundations and was awarded the 2003 Santa Fe Prize for Photography. His work is represented in major public and private collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Soth's photographs have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney and So Paulo Biennials. His monographs Sleeping by the Mississippi and NIAGARA were published by Steidl. Soth is an associate photographer with Magnum Photos

The Mushroom Collector by Jason Fulford Pdf

This publication reissues a beloved photobook classic--acknowledged as such by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger in the third volume of The Photobook: A History--that has been out of print since the hardcover edition was published in 2010. As photographer Jason Fulford (born 1973) recently learned firsthand, mushrooms have a way of growing and spreading wherever they touch ground. It all started when a friend of Fulford's gave him a box, found at a flea market, full of photos of mushrooms--unassuming pictures taken by an unknown but almost certainly amateur photographer, apparently as notes for some mycological studies. Fulford's art photographs (aside from his well-known book Dancing Pictures, which depicted people getting down to their favorite songs) are usually of staid, quasi-mute objects: a smashed Dorito chip overrun with ants, two bronzed doorknobs spooning, the blank back of a street sign. Yet these mushroom images got stuck in Fulford's mind, like a bad song sometimes does, and they started to grow in his own work. The Mushroom Collector combines some of the original flea-market mushroom pictures with his own images and text by the artist about the project.

Bird by Roni Horn,Philip Larratt-Smith Pdf

Roni Horn's "To Place" is an ongoing series of small editions, each book a unique look at the relationship between identity and location. They take as their starting point Iceland and Horn's evolving experiences there, illustrated in watercolors, photographs, typographic drawings, and text. "Doubt Box" is the ninth book in the set, printed in a limited edition of 1,000 copies, and it comes in the form of a collection of 28 loose two-sided images printed on cards, which makes for 56 color reproductions. One face of each shows the glacial river Skafta, proverbially both changing and constant. The other shows any of a collection of possibilities--a boy, an iceberg, birds. Each card offers a hybrid, a composite, while together they suggest the universality of duality, and particularly the dual nature of identity.

Americans Looking In by Emilie Ahern,Sherri Littlefield Pdf

The Americans, by Robert Frank, was a highly influential book in post-war American photography. The photographs were notable for their distanced view of both high and low strata of American society and the book as a whole created a complicated portrait of the period, interpreted as skeptical of contemporary values and evocative of ubiquitous loneliness. Both curators of this exhibition have reflected on what it means to be "American." Having multicultural backgrounds and being raised in the States has given them both moments of confusion and frustration, and has led them to wonder what this country has to do with personal identity. When forming this exhibition, the curators presented themselves, artists, editors, leaders and everyday-people with the question - "What is American culture today, and what does an American look like?"They ask the viewer to consider the question with them starting through the eyes of the artists in this exhibition, leading to self reflection upon exiting the space.

White Planet, Black Heart by Torbjørn Rødland,Gil Blank,Ina Blom,Hillary Raphael Pdf

Torbjorn Rodland is to photography what the Pet Shop Boys are to pop: a master of the delicately orchestrated cliche overload, a surcharge of the too obvious, too cute or too inane, played to the point where, drained of all trace of common sense, it suggests a new sense of silence, of mystery. Rodland has a knack for producing images that make you ask what are, in fact, appropriate motives for art photography: Images of single audio or video cassettes? Bleak black-and-white renditions of countryside churches? George W. Bush's favorite ice cream? A black banana? Girls and pets, pets and girls? He creates a complex of readings that inveigles the viewer into spending time with each single image, to reconsider its meaning and relevance. White Planet, Black Heart makes no excuses as it reinvents the romantic impulses of popular culture. This is Rodland's first book.

New York; the New Art Scene by Ugo Mulas Pdf

"Inspired by the strong American presence at the 1964 Venice Biennale, the Italian photographer Ugo Mulas made three extended visits to New York over the following years. The result, a massive, handsomely designed volume called New York: The New Art Scene, captures the art world at one of its most volatile and vivid peaks. ... The artists posed for [Mulas--and the book is peppered with terrifically dashing portraits--but more often they went about their business, making art, making dinner, entertaining, carrying on. With more than 500 photos reproduced in heavily inked, knockout black and white, the book has a marvelous scope."--The Book of 101 Books : Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century / Edited by Andrew Roth. New York: PPP Editions in association with Ruth Horowitz, 2001.

A Field Guide to the North American Family by Garth Risk Hallberg Pdf

The very first work of fiction by the best-selling, acclaimed author of City on Fire--his piercingly beautiful treasure box of a novella about two families in the suburbs, now in a newly designed full-color edition For years, the Hungates and the Harrisons have coexisted peacefully in the same Long Island neighborhood, enjoying the pleasures and weathering the pitfalls of their suburban habitat. But when the patriarch of one family dies unexpectedly, the survivors face a stark imperative: adapt or face extinction. In sixty-three interlinked vignettes and striking accompanying photographs, the novella cuts multiple paths--which can be reconstructed in any order--through the lives of its richly imagined characters. Part art object, part Choose Your Own Adventure, A Field Guide to the North American Family is an innovative and deeply personal look at the ties that bind, as well as a poignant meditation on connection in a fragmented world.

Yellowdog by Debra Marlin Pdf

Debra Marlin began photographing dogs nearly eleven years ago, documenting their romps and rambles along the rustic byways and sum-dappled beaches of Martha's Vineyard, and capturing their ever-endearing spirit in her moving images. In each of her photographs, she conjures up the everyday joys of a dog's life - naps on the porch, frolics in the water, gambols along the lane, runs on the beach - and captures the distinct personalities of Sonny, Lake, Tucker, and Breaker, her four lovely golden boys. With a text that celebrates their life together and movingly recounts Marlin's ordeal when Sonny, her beloved pet and first golden, suddenly died, Yellowdog is a heartfelt paean to the special bond between dogs and humans.
