Sharing the Word through the Liturgical Year by Gustavo Gutierrez Pdf

The characteristic mission of Christians is proclaiming the gospel, the good news of the gratuitous love of God for every person but preferentially for the poor and excluded . . . Our greatest wish is that these pages will be useful to those who seek to meditate on the Lord's word and to share it with others . . . . Gustavo GutiŽrrez, the renowned Peruvian theologian, here shares the wisdom of a pastor and homilist in opening up the riches of scripture through the liturgical year. Covering all three cycles (A-B-C) GutiŽrrez offers penetrating reflections on each of the Sunday lectionary readings. With brief exegesis and homiletic guide, GutiŽrrez offers a perspective on sacred scripture that continually emphasizes its themes of liberation and love, and draws connections to the challenge of faithfulness in our time.

Like a Hammer Shattering Rock by Megan McKenna Pdf

Renowned Catholic author Megan McKenna celebrates her 50th book with a controversial interpretation of the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John and what they mean for the Church and society today. In many ways, modern audiences have become so familiar with the gospels that we've stopped listening and integreting their wisdom into our everyday lives. Acclaimed author Megan McKenna explores the messages of the four gospels in the context of daily life when they were originally written and interprets their meaning for our modern world. While some argue for the development of new gospels for the 21st century, McKenna argues that we haven't paid due attention to the ones we already have; in many cases, we've ignored sections of these teachings entirely and twisted their meaning to suit our own agendas. McKenna breaks it down, gospel by gospel, and shows us how the lessons of Jesus's apostles continue to resonate.

My Words Will Not Pass Away by Martin Hogan Pdf

‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away’ (Luke 21:33) At the weekday Eucharist we read from sections of all four gospels in the course of the liturgical year. The reflections in this book are based predominantly on the gospel readings for the weekdays of the coming liturgical year, 2021/22, with occasional references to the first reading. They follow the sequence of the weeks of the calendar year, beginning on the 29th November, Monday of the first week of Advent. In the course of the liturgical year, the gospel readings present us with a significant selection of the words and deeds of Jesus from all four gospels. In and through these gospel readings we encounter the living word of the risen Lord to his church. There is rich fare here to nourish our faith life and to help us to grow in our knowledge and love of the Lord. These short reflections attempt to listen to the Scripture passages on their own terms, while showing how they can continue to speak to our church and our world today. Many people feel drawn to basing their prayer on the Scriptures, in particular the gospels. It is hoped that these reflections will serve as a help to prayer for people of faith. They may also be of service to priests who seek to offer a short reflection on the gospel reading of the day to their parishioners. In parishes where, from time to time, there is a Liturgy of the Word in place of Mass, the Minister of the Word might read the corresponding reflection after the gospel reading. On most week days, the same readings are proclaimed in the church throughout the world in the setting of the Eucharist. To read and reflect upon the readings for the weekdays of the liturgical year is to go on a spiritual journey with the universal church.

Between Memory and Hope by Maxwell E. Johnson Pdf

This anthology surveys the development and theology of the liturgical year in the order of its historical evolution: From Sabbath to Sunday"; "From Passover to Pascha" (Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost); and "From Pascha to Parousia" (Epiphany, Christmas, and Advent). In addition, introductory essays on the meaning of the liturgical year and a short concluding section on the sanctoral cycle ("From Parousia to Persons") are also provided. While written as a companion to standard works in the field, beginning with graduate students in liturgy and seminarians, this book is intended for all - pastors, liturgists, catechists, religious educators - who seek to live according to the Church's theology of time as it is reflected in its calendar of feasts and seasons. Through feast and fast, through festival and preparation, the liturgical year celebrates the presence of the already crucified and risen Christ among us today. Between Memory and Hope shows that to live between past and future, between memory and hope, is to remember Christ's passion as we encounter his presence among us now and as we await his coming again in glory. Articles and their contributors are "The Liturgical Year: Studies, Prospects, Reflections," by Robert F. Taft, SJ; "Liturgical Time in the Ancient Church: The State of Research," by Thomas J. Latin American Liberation Theology by David Tombs Pdf

David Tombs offers an accessible introduction to the theological challenges raised by Latin American Liberation and a new contribution to how these challenges might be understood as a chronological sequence. Liberation theology emerged in the 1960s in Latin America and thrived until it reached a crisis in the 1990s. This work traces the distinct developments in thought through the decades, thus presenting a contextual theology. The book is divided into five main sections: the historical role of the church from Columbus’s arrival in 1492 until the Cuban revolution of 1959; the reform and renewal decade of the 1960s; the transitional decade of the 1970s; the revision and redirection of liberation theology in the 1980s; and a crisis of relevance in the 1990s. This book offers insights into liberation theology’s profound contributions for any socially engaged theology of the future and is crucial to understanding liberation theology and its legacies. Many people feel drawn to basing their prayer on the Scriptures, in particular the gospels. These short reflections attempt to listen to the gospel text on its own terms while showing how it can continue to speak to our church and our world today. The book will appeal to priests in parishes who may wish to prepare a short homily for the weekday Mass, as well as to parishioners who wish to prayerfully reflect on the weekday gospel readings, as well as Lectio Divina groups in parishes. The calendar of the book helps the busy presider, as the reflections are linked to the readings by calendar date rather than the church calendar.
