Dreaming Culture by J. Mageo Pdf

Dreams seem the most private territory of experience. Yet Dreaming Culture argues they are a space in which we practice, consider, question, and adapt cultural models of the self, gender, sexuality, relationships, and agency. Through an innovative "dream ethnography" from college students in the northwestern U.S., this book contributes to recent research on dreaming and the brain in psychology and continuing research on dreaming and the self in clinical psychology and psychological anthropology. Dreaming Culture uses critical theory to understand power relations embedded in cultural models, a perspective often lacking in cognitive anthropology and in psychological studies of self and mind.

Women in Game of Thrones by Valerie Estelle Frankel Pdf

Game of Thrones, one of the hottest series on television, leaves hundreds of critics divided on how "feminist" the show really is. Certainly the female characters, strong and weak, embody a variety of archetypes--widow queens, warrior women, damsels in distress, career women, priestesses, crones, mothers and maidens. However, the problem is that most of them play a single role without nuance--even the "strong women" have little to do besides strut about as one-note characters. This book analyzes the women and their portrayals one by one, along with their historical inspirations. Accompanying issues in television studies also appear, from the male gaze to depiction of race. How these characters are treated in the series and how they treat themselves becomes central, as many strip for the pleasure of men or are sacrificed as pawns. Some nude scenes or moments of male violence are fetishized and filmed to tantalize, while others show the women's trauma and attempt to identify with the scene's female perspective. The key is whether the characters break out of their traditional roles and become multidimensional.

Sins of Commission by Cordelia Frances Biddle Pdf

A society woman struggles to solve cases of arson and abduction in Victorian-era Philadelphia, in the series praised as “a fine mix of history and mystery” (Booklist). In nineteenth-century Philadelphia, a case of arson turns lethal—but who was the perpetrator and what was the motive? While Thomas Kelman, Martha Beale’s beau, investigates the blaze, her adoptive daughter, Ella, is abducted. Then another fire destroys the home of industrialist Darius Rause, killing his adulterous wife. Is there a connection between the crimes? Martha and Kelman work to find an answer as they fight to rescue Ella before she also perishes, in this fast-paced historical crime novel in which duplicity reigns and the destinies of rich and poor collide. Praise for the Martha Beale Mysteries “Exceptional attention to period detail helps transport the reader to a past very unlike our own and yet so similar.” —Publishers Weekly “First-rate.” —Julia Spencer-Fleming, New York Times–bestselling author of Hid from Our Eyes “Biddle successfully uses 19th-century Philadelphia, mining the landscape for the kinds of jewels that illuminate a good mystery, and shaping characters that ring true to the elements of their creation.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer

Trends in Contemporary Assamese Theatre by Namrata Pathak Pdf

It is the very nature of representation to be theatrical and self-referential. This book undercuts the fact that all representational knowledge is autonomous and sovereign. At times, theatrical representations can misguide and mislead. Representation can also ineluctably project ones own preferences and preoccupations. Thus, representation and subjective interpretation divulge into myriad domains. This book is concerned with the effects and consequences of representation and its politics. This book examines not only how language as well as representation produce meaning, but also how discursive knowledge connected to power regulates, conducts, and constructs identities and defines the way certain things are thought about practices and are studied. The book takes note of the fact that within the framework of performance, a performative subject does not wear a coherent identity as it is fragmented, decentered, simulated and is unstable, while being both virtual as well as actual. In the field of semiotics, theatre is historically and reciprocally affected by practice, especially within contingent conditions of time. In theatre semiotics, the new image of knowledge is that of turbulence. Here, knowledge is not so much a system as it is a confluence. Carrying this stance further we can say that contemporary Assamese theatre is characterised by shifting counter-voices and sub-textual underpinnings. This act forces reading into two directions: dialogic openness and variability of meaning that question the theatre directors as the only ones who know.
