Memoirs from Mrs. Hudson's Kitchen by Wendy Heyman-Marsaw Pdf

Mrs. Hudson is possibly the most famous landlady in literature. Presiding over the comings and goings at 221B Baker Street, she saw many clients, villains and Baker Street Irregulars during the tenancy of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. This series of columns, thoughts, recipes and memoirs are from a long-running column in the Sherlockian journal Canadian Holmes. In it the author, Wendy Heyman-Marsaw, puts herself in Mrs. Hudson’s shoes, up and down the 17 steps, and recounts not only the time and era but the food, dining and eating habits of Victorian England. This book explores the meals Mrs. Hudson would have prepared and served her two famous lodgers, what food they would have had while on rail journeys or eaten at hotels around London or inns around England. You will also learn about Mrs. Hudson herself, her husband and even her views towards women’s roles and rights in Victorian times. With many illustrations from the Strand Magazine, readers will get a rare peek inside Victorian life.

(Re)Introducing Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson by Elisa Valerie Thieme Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (English and Linguistics), course: Reading/Writing London, language: English, abstract: This paper focuses on the genesis of one of the most iconic friendships and juxtaposes the literary birth of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson with their televisual re-birth. Furthermore, it is primarily concerned with the evolving friendship between the well-known inhabitants of 221B Baker Street and the question of whether or not it might be regarded as “symbiotic”. In addition to an analysis of the homosexual innuendos that occur in A Study in Pink, there will be a brief section on the city of London, which is often perceived as a third protagonist. Due to the finite length of this paper, other aspects concerning the crime case, literary adaptation theory/filming politics, the visual aesthetics of A Study in Pink and the question of (post)modernity have either only briefly been touched on or been omitted altogether.

The Art of Detection by Laurie R. King Pdf

In this thrilling new crime novel that ingeniously bridges Laurie R. King’s Edgar and Creasey Awards—winning Kate Martinelli series and her bestselling series starring Mary Russell, San Francisco homicide detective Kate Martinelli crosses paths with Sherlock Holmes–in a spellbinding dual mystery that could come only from the “intelligent, witty, and complex” mind of New York Times bestselling author Laurie R. King…. Kate Martinelli has seen her share of peculiar things as a San Francisco cop, but never anything quite like this: an ornate Victorian sitting room straight out of a Sherlock Holmes story–complete with violin, tobacco-filled Persian slipper, and gunshots in the wallpaper that spell out the initials of the late queen. Philip Gilbert was a true Holmes fanatic, from his antiquated décor to his vintage wardrobe. And no mere fan of fiction’s great detective, but a leading expert with a collection of priceless memorabilia–a collection some would kill for. And perhaps someone did: In his collection is a century-old manuscript purportedly written by Holmes himself–a manuscript that eerily echoes details of Gilbert’s own murder. Now, with the help of her partner, Al Hawkin, Kate must follow the convoluted trail of a killer–one who may have trained at the feet of the greatest mind of all times.

Medical Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and Dr. Verner by Carl Heifetz Pdf

The Sherlockian Canon, as prolific as it is, contains few accounts in which Mr. Holmes as his medical colleagues Drs. Watson and Verner, solve cases involving frightening medical conditions. It strikes me that many more such cases were successfully solved by Mr. Holmes and his associates. It is unlikely that Drs Watson and Verner would allow such mysteries remain unsolved. However, the likelihood of public fear nod panic has resulted in the stories being kept secret. Thanks to the current Verner family we have now been permitted to read Dr. Watson’s narrative concerning these adventures.

Originally serialised in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, it is set largely on Dartmoor in Devon in England's West Country and tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson investigate the case. This was the first appearance of Holmes since his apparent death in "The Final Problem", and the success of The Hound of the Baskervilles led to the character's eventual revival

A Study in Scarlet by A. Conan Doyle by Arthur Conan Doyle Pdf

Part I: The Reminiscences of Watson[edit] Part I leads with a heading which establishes the role of Dr. Watson as narrator and sets up the narrative stand-point that the work to follow is not fiction, but fact: "Being a Reprint from the Reminiscences of John H. Watson, MD, Late of the Army Medical Department." The story begins in 1881, [4] when Dr. Watson, having returned to London after serving in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, visits the Criterion Restaurant and runs into an old friend named Stamford, [5] who had been a dresser under him at St. Bartholomew's Hospital.[6] Watson confides in Stamford that, due to a shoulder injury that he sustained at the Battle of Maiwand, he has been forced to leave the armed services and is now looking for a place to live. Stamford mentions that an acquaintance of his, Sherlock Holmes, is looking for someone to split the rent at a flat at 221B Baker Street, but he cautions Watson about Holmes's eccentricities. Stamford takes Watson back to St. Bartholomew's where, in a laboratory, they find Holmes experimenting with a reagent, seeking a test to detect human haemoglobin. Holmes explains the significance of bloodstains as evidence in criminal trials. After Stamford introduces Watson to Holmes, Holmes shakes Watson's hand and comments, "You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive?" Though Holmes chooses not to explain why he made the comment, Watson raises the subject of their parallel quests for a place to live in London, and Holmes explains that he has found the perfect place in Baker Street. At Holmes's prompting, the two review their various shortcomings to make sure that they can live together. After seeing the rooms at 221B, they move in and grow accustomed to their new situation. Watson is amazed by Holmes, who has profound knowledge of chemistry and sensational literature, very precise but narrow knowledge of geology and botany; yet knows little about literature, astronomy, philosophy, and politics. Holmes also has multiple guests visiting him at different intervals during the day.
