Sherlock Holmes and his Adventures on American Radio by Ian Dickerson Pdf

It’s been over a hundred and twenty-five years since the adventures of Sherlock Holmes first appeared in print and captivated a generation of readers. Subsequent generations have enjoyed, adapted and expanded on his adventures leading him to become perhaps the most enduring character in fiction. That long run has been helped by his adventures in a variety of media, most notably film and television. But what about radio? Holmes has had a long career in radio on both sides of the Atlantic, indeed the radio adventures of Sherlock Holmes are almost as old as radio itself. He debuted on air in 1922 and just a few years later Holmes and Watson were featuring in a regular weekly series on NBC in the USA. That series ended in 1936 but when Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce made the first of their career-defining fourteen films as Holmes and Watson there was a certain inevitability about Holmes’ return to the American airwaves. The subsequent series ran for seven years and almost two hundred and twenty half hour radio shows. When Rathbone quit the role—in both radio and film – the show limped on for a few years. This book tells the story of those shows.

In these all new adventures of the great consulting detective, writers Steven Philip Jones and Matthew J. Contained within are FOUR tales: THE ADVENTURE OF THE BORGIA RING - Judith Oxley wants to hire Sherlock Holmes to find her missing father, Lord Oxley, along with their family’s prize possession, the Akbar Shah diamond. THE ADVENTURE OF THE PETTY CURSES - Sir Malcolm Angus-Burton, adviser to the Queen on matters of China, insists his Egyptian wife, Halima, has put a curse upon him. A CASE OF UNFINISHED BUSINESS - Soon after Watson returns from the Reichenbach Falls, a former classmate, American Lot Morrill, pays a call. Their visit is cut off by Lestrade, who needs Watson’s assistance in a delicate matter. The body of one of Moriarty’s lieutenants, Harsh Washburne, has been discovered. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle Pdf

In general the stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes identify, and try to correct, social injustices. Holmes is portrayed as offering a new, fairer sense of justice. The stories were well received, and boosted the subscriptions figures of The Strand Magazine, prompting Doyle to be able to demand more money for his next set of stories. The first story, "A Scandal in Bohemia", includes the character of Irene Adler, who, despite being featured only within this one story by Doyle, is a prominent character in modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations, generally as a love interest for Holmes. Doyle included four of the twelve stories from this collection in his twelve favourite Sherlock Holmes stories, picking "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" as his overall favourite.

2017 is the 130th anniversary of the publication of A Study in Scarlet, the first recorded adventure of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson. What an amazing journey it's been! In addition to the pitifully few sixty tales originally presented in The Canon, published between 1887 and 1927, there have been literally thousands of additional Holmes adventures in the form of books, short stories, radio and television episodes, movies, manuscripts, comics, and fan fiction. And yet, for those who are true friends and admirers of the Master Detective of Baker Street, where it is always 1895 (or a few decades on either side of that!) these stories are not enough. Give us more! In March 1998, legendary radio dramatist, producer, writer, director, and founder of Imagination Theatre listened to this request and broadcast the first of an astounding number of Holmes radio shows over their United States network of stations. In the intervening years, 128 original Holmes episodes (and one recently found "lost" episode") were broadcast before Imagination Theatre closed its doors in early 2017. Additionally, the cast and crew performed their version of the entire Holmes Canon between 2005 and 2016, featuring the same actors as Holmes and Watson, (John Patrick Lowrie and Larry Albert, respectively,) as well as having every script adapted by the same author, M.J. Elliott - something that has never been done before. Astonishingly, this great number of episodes were written by a relatively small group of dramatists. Imagination Theatre's departure from the airwaves left a great void, both in terms of those seeking "movies for your mind", but also those wanting new quality stories about the true Sherlock Holmes, set in the correct period, and featuring tales that truthfully represented Holmes and Watson. This book serves both to honor Jim French and his lifetime of achievements, and also Mr. Sherlock Holmes, along with the dramatists, cast, and crew who brought the new adventures to life. Inside this volume, you will find a script by every one of the authors who wrote about Holmes for Imagination Theatre, representing some of the finest new Holmesian storytelling to be found, and honoring the man described by Watson as "the best and wisest … whom I have ever known." Featuring fourteen scripts from every writer who contributed to the series run of Imagination Theatre's Sherlock Holmes.

“If you love Sherlock Holmes, you’ll love this book…the best account of Baker Street mania ever written.”—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Winner of the Agatha Award for best nonfiction work Edgar Award finalist for best critical/biographical work Anthony Award finalist for best critical/nonfiction work Everyone knows Sherlock Holmes. But what made this fictional character, dreamed up by a small-town English doctor in the 1880s, into such a lasting success, despite the author’s own attempt to escape his invention? In From Holmes to Sherlock, Swedish author and Baker Street Irregular Mattias Boström recreates the full story behind the legend for the first time. From a young Arthur Conan Doyle sitting in a Scottish lecture hall taking notes on his medical professor’s powers of observation to the pair of modern-day fans who brainstormed the idea behind the TV sensation Sherlock, from the publishing world’s first literary agent to the Georgian princess who showed up at the Conan Doyle estate and altered a legacy, the narrative follows the men and women who have created and perpetuated the myth. It includes tales of unexpected fortune, accidental romance, and inheritances gone awry, and tells of the actors, writers, readers, and other players who have transformed Sherlock Holmes from the gentleman amateur of the Victorian era to the odd genius of today. The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories Part IV by David Marcum Pdf

In 2015, The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories burst upon the scene, featuring over sixty new traditional Sherlock Holmes adventures, all set within the correct time period, and written by many of today’s leading Sherlockian authors from around the world. This first anthology, spread over three huge volumes, was the largest collection of its kind ever assembled in one place. Response was immediately and overwhelmingly positive, and there were soon calls for additional volumes. The result is this new collection, the next in an ongoing series, featuring twenty-two more Holmes investigations. Since his first appearance in print in 1887, the popularity of Sherlock Holmes has only increased. Although originally chronicled in just sixty exploits, the number of additional Holmes tales discovered since then is literally in the tens of thousands. Along with those original narratives published by Dr. Watson’s first literary agent, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, countless other people have managed to find their way to Watson’s Tin Dispatch Box in order to reveal more exciting cases featuring the Great Detective. These accounts stretch from one of Holmes’s earliest cases, later recounted to Watson as they sit by the fire in the Baker Street sitting room, to an adventure just before Holmes’s retirement that affects both the ancient history and the very future of England. These and all the other excellent tales contained in this volume represent some of the finest new Holmesian storytelling to be found, and honor the man described by Watson as “the best and wisest ... whom I have ever known.” This anthology features contributions by: Derrick Belanger, Deanna Baran, Daniel D. Victor, Mark Mower, Craig Janacek, Jayantika Ganguly, Denis O. Smith, Matthew Booth, J.R. Campbell, Bonnie MacBird, Arthur Hall, Bob Byrne, Andrew Lane, Roger Johnson, Hugh Ashton, David Stuart Davies, Vincent W. Wright, Daniel McGachey, Nicholas Utechin, Jeremy Holstein, David Marcum, and Marcia Wilson, as well as a poem by Andrea Mantin Levy, and forewords by David Marcum, Steven Rothman, Richard Doyle, Steve Emecz, and Melissa Farnham. “This fourth volume continues the tradition set by the first three books in the series. The twenty-three items in this book include twice as many that I rate as excellent as the few I rate only as good. All the rest I rate as very good and that gives the entire volume a rating of 'excellent' as compared to any other Anthology.” - Philip K Jones
