Shine On, Marquee Moon by Zoë Howe Pdf

“A new relationship; the prescient mingling of two record collections. A stark, sonic reflection of your partnership’s potential, or lack of. Never mind compatibility tests and first date small talk, whether or not someone is a suitable prospect can be divined by a glance across the spines of well-loved jewel cases and battered LPs.” Shine On, Marquee Moon, the debut novel of respected music writer Zoë Howe, is a rock ‘n’ roll love story that celebrates the extremes of life in the music business and challenges the myth of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll with plenty of wry humour, strong characters and sharp dialogue along the way. Never mind chick lit. This is rock chick lit. Sylvie is a dresser working for a New Romantic band currently enjoying a 21st century revival. Sylvie becomes romantically involved with Nick – reluctant heart-throb and the least unhinged member of the band – after bonding amid the chaos of touring life over a shared obsession with Television’s seminal album ‘Marquee Moon’. However, a dark secret threatens to destroy their future together and much more besides. Shine On, Marquee Moon exposes the hilarious, heart-wrenching and often bizarre reality of life on and off the road, where the most unlikely people become family, and ‘friends’ aren't always who they appear to be. "A great story, full of sharp and funny observations. Someone needs to form a Concierge tribute band." – Gideon Coe, BBC 6Music "Shine on, Marquee Moon is everything you'd expect from Zoë Howe: warm, wry, evocative and unconventional. This is an author who knows the idiosyncrasies of the music business and captures them all with candour and affection in a novel that is funny, fierce and better than most comeback tours.” – Jane Bradley, founder and director of For Books’ Sake. "Zoë Howe is one of our favourite music writers – a great writer who is in love with rock 'n' roll and a writer who can make the essence and magic of the dark stuff seem so alive…" – John Robb, Louder Than War "Tangled romance, ripe idiocy, monstrous self-delusion and 'that familiar backstage smell - hairspray, sweat, alcohol, dust burning on lightbulbs' ... Zoë Howe's crackling account of life around a rock band is fast, funny and superbly well-observed" – Mark Ellen, renowned music journalist and editor (Smash Hits, The Word, Select, Mojo, Q), broadcaster and author of Rock Stars Stole My Life "Heroin, and a fine heroine – Zoë Howe knows exactly how it'll pan out. Classic, clever, funny tale of what happens in the covens around those all boy-clubs of bands…" – Kirsty Allison, founder and editor of Cold Lips, books/arts editor of DJ Magazine "Hilarious and poignant, a rock ’n' roll love story about a woman seeking her own place in a cock-centric industry. A stylish ride through band-life, written by a woman well-versed in music's tricks and secrets... Lots of fun." – Emma Jane Unsworth, bestselling author of Animals and Hungry, The Stars & Everything Shine On, Marquee Moon is shortlisted for the Virginia Prize For Fiction 2016.

Fly me to the moon by Bik Van der Pol Pdf

Suppose the New Rijksmuseum were in the market for a site on the moon, some time in the near or distant future. Would it be sensible, or nonsensical, for the Rijksmuseum to purchase a lunar plot where it can safely house its collection? Since the "discovery" of the moon, people have laid claim to it, whether symbolic or genuine. The moon has resources that could potentially be extracted using technologies yet to be developed. What is more, it may become possible for people to live on the moon someday. Pending future developments, there is a lively Internet trade in deeds to pieces of the moon, available at bargain prices. The legality of this form of private enterprise is obviously debatable, and yet... Bik Van der Pol took as core item of the project one of the oldest objects in the collection of the Rijksmuseum: a moon rock. The crew of the first manned lunar landing mission, Apollo 11, brought this rock back to earth in 1969. That same year the three astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins visited the Netherlands. Willem Drees, a former Dutch prime minister, received the rock on that occasion as a present from the United States ambassador. And later, this piece of stone was donated to the Rijksmuseum. The moon rock creates links between the site of the museum, the city, the collection and its own origins. These links are examined from various perspectives. In the background are questions concerning the public and private significance of a collection, as well as questions of public interest.

Pick Up the Pieces by John Corbett Pdf

Unless you lived through the 1970s, it seems impossible to understand it at all. Drug delirium, groovy fashion, religious cults, mega corporations, glitzy glam, hard rock, global unrest—from our 2018 perspective, the seventies are often remembered as a bizarre blur of bohemianism and disco. With Pick Up the Pieces, John Corbett transports us back in time to this thrillingly tumultuous era through a playful exploration of its music. Song by song, album by album, he draws our imaginations back into one of the wildest decades in history. Rock. Disco. Pop. Soul. Jazz. Folk. Funk. The music scene of the 1970s was as varied as it was exhilarating, but the decade’s diversity of sound has never been captured in one book before now. Pick Up the Pieces gives a panoramic view of the era’s music and culture through seventy-eight essays that allow readers to dip in and out of the decade at random or immerse themselves completely in Corbett’s chronological journey. An inviting mix of skilled music criticism and cultural observation, Pick Up the Pieces is also a coming-of-age story, tracking the author’s absorption in music as he grows from age seven to seventeen. Along with entertaining personal observations and stories, Corbett includes little-known insights into musicians from Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, James Brown, and Fleetwood Mac to the Residents, Devo, Gal Costa, and Julius Hemphill. A master DJ on the page, Corbett takes us through the curated playlist that is Pick Up the Pieces with captivating melody of language and powerful enthusiasm for the era. This funny, energetic book will have readers longing nostalgically for a decade long past.

Born in Flames by Howard Hampton Pdf

Twenty years as an outsider scouring the underbelly of American culture has made Howard Hampton a uniquely hard-nosed guide to the heart of pop darkness. Bridging the fatalistic, intensely charged space between Apocalypse Now Redux and NirvanaÕs ÒSmells Like Teen Spirit,Ó his writing breaks down barriers of ignorance and arrogance that have segregated art forms from each other and often from the world at large. In the freewheeling spirit of Pauline Kael, Lester Bangs, and Manny Farber, Hampton calls up the extremist, underground tendencies and archaic forces simmering beneath the surface of popular forms. Ranging from the kinetic poetry of Hong Kong cinema and the neoÐNew Wave energy of Irma Vep to the punk heroines of Sleater-Kinney and Ghost World, Born in Flames plays odd couples off one another: pitting Natural Born Killers against Forrest Gump, contrasting Jean-Luc Godard with Steven Spielberg, defending David Lynch against aesthetic ideologues, invoking The Curse of the Mekons against Fredric JamesonÕs Postmodernism, and introducing D. H. Lawrence to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. ÒWe are born in flames,Ó sang the incandescent Lora Logic, and here those flames are a source of illumination as well as destruction, warmth as well as consumption. From the scorched-earth works of action-movie provocateurs Seijun Suzuki and Sam Peckinpah to the cargo cult soundscapes of Pere Ubu and the Czech dissidents Plastic People of the Universe, Born in Flames is a headlong plunge into the passions and disruptive power of art.

The Blue Moment by Richard Williams Pdf

'It is the most singular of sounds, yet among the most ubiquitous. It is the sound of isolation that has sold itself to millions.' Miles Davis's Kind of Blue is the best selling piece of music in the history of jazz, and for many listeners among the most haunting in all of twentieth-century music. It is also, notoriously, the only jazz album many people own. Recorded in 1959 (in nine miraculous hours), there has been nothing like it since. Its atmosphere - slow, dark, meditative, luminous - became all-pervasive for a generation, and has remained the epitome of melancholy coolness ever since. Richard Williams has written a history of the album which for once does not rip it out of its wider cultural context. He evokes the essence of the music - identifying the qualities that make it so uniquely appealing - while making effortless connections to painting, literature, philosophy and poetry. This makes for an elegant, graceful and beautifully-written narrative.

Babylon's Burning by Clinton Heylin Pdf

Destined to become a classic on the subject alongside Legs McNeil's Please Kill Me, Babylon's Burning is a comprehensive, groundbreaking, and definitive account of one of the most influential and lasting music movements in history, one that ironically was built on self-annihilation. In August 1977, just a few months before the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks was released to worldwide controlled chaos, Johnny Rotten commented on Elvis's death, saying, "In a way I don't really feel that [his death] has anything to do with me. . . . He became everything we're trying to react against. . . . I don't want to become a fat, rich, sick, reclusive rock star. . . . Elvis was dead before he died, and his gut was so big it cast a shadow over rock and roll." Thus was launched the first potent salvo in punk rock's vainglorious history. In his provocative and definitive history, Clinton Heylin asserts, among other things, that real punk rock bands don't make second records. He finds the origins of punk in a small circle of critics and social misfits who defined the aesthetic before the music even existed. Writers like Nick Kent, Ben Edmonds, and, most significantly, Lester Bangs reacted against rock as it had evolved by the mid-'70s, and argued for something altogether freer, younger, louder, and more anarchic. As the words, pictures, and fashions depicted in magazines spread, bands sprouted in places like Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Brisbane, and San Francisco in addition to the commonly known movements in New York, London, and Manchester. From early progenitors like Suicide, the New York Dolls, and Patti Smith in New York to Rocket from the Tombs in Cleveland and the Saints in Australia, Heylin brings to life the strands of a global art form that birthed simultaneously. Punk eschewed conventional lyrics and promoted a gutteral musicality, yet contained a keen pop sensibility. Heylin tells the story of the Sex Pistols' meteoric rise and fall, and the bands who legitimately took up the mantle (with evolved underlying principles) in the eighties, nineties, and up to Kurt Cobain's untimely death, which heralded the end of an era.
