The shipwreck of Santa Maria in Padovetere (Comacchio-Ferrara). Archaeology of a riverine barge of Late Roman period and of other recent finds of sewn boats by Carlo Beltrame,Elisa Costa Pdf

The 5th century AD barge of Santa Maria in Padovetere was discovered and investigated inside an ancient river, West of Comacchio. The place, which later hosted the parish of Santa Maria in Padovetere, is considered a strategic crossroads of Late Roman waterways. The anoxic conditions have well preserved the bottom and the entire right side. This extraordinary conservation, coupled with in situ digital documentation, has allowed the reconstruction in 3D of the entire shape of the shipwreck. It was a riverine flat bottom barge with a very high stern and a central long rudder according to a shipshape well documented by Central European Roman sculptures. Scientific analysis allowed to reconstruct the environment where it moved and to make hypotheses on the types of goods transported. This is a very rare example of an ancient riverine barge and an important evidence of the technique of construction by sewing. The book also presents other recent finds of this construction technique which, during the Roman period and the Early Middle Age, was used only in the Upper Adriatic.

The Forgotten Shipwreck by Nick Lyon Pdf

The Forgotten Shipwreck is the true story of the boat which sank the day after England won the World Cup. It spans so many facets, from a village numbed, with whole families wiped out, to angry exchanges in the House of Commons and law courts. There is intrigue, chicanery, deceit, incompetence and greed. It had far-reaching ramifications and yet, for all that, the Darlwyne tragedy lacked an ending. On Thursday 4 August 1966 the sea began to give up its dead. The relatives of twelve of the thirty-one people who had set out on a pleasure trip on 31 July could at least temper their grief to some small extent with the fact that their remains had been found. The loved ones of the other nineteen would have no such solace. Some fifty years later a team of divers, archaeologists, filmmakers, photographers and wreck researchers set about to change that. By piecing together eyewitness accounts, news stories, court proceedings, weather reports and archive material, and by applying modern methods and underwater search techniques would they be able to succeed where the original search mission had been unable? Could they unravel the mystery of complicated waters and pinpoint the final resting place of the Darlwyne?

Please God Send Me a Wreck by Brad Duncan,Martin Gibbs Pdf

This book explores the historical and archaeological evidence of the relationships between a coastal community and the shipwrecks that have occurred along the southern Australian shoreline over the last 160 years. It moves beyond a focus on shipwrecks as events and shows the short and long term economic, social and symbolic significance of wrecks and strandings to the people on the shoreline. This volume draws on extensive oral histories, documentary and archaeological research to examine the tensions within the community, negotiating its way between its roles as shipwreck saviours and salvors.
