Short Studies in the Science of Comparative Religions by James George Roche Forlong Pdf

Excerpt from Short Studies in the Science of Comparative Religions: Embracing All the Religions of Asia The following "Short Studies" on very important subjects are published at the urgent request of friends who have read them in a less complete state in an encyclopaedia of religious terms, rites and symbolisms, upon which the author has been engaged for a great many years, and out of which grew his previous volumes. Other subjects might have been selected as more popular, but none could be so vital or fundamental, and as regards religious ideas, so all-embracing. This volume is virtually an epitome of religions, but is rather for the general reader than the specialist, for it shows the former the result of the researches of the latter, and the important scope of these; and it is hoped makes the general literary position more assured. The public are rarely equipped with the necessary information on which to form a judgment, so that much precious time and literary labour is often wasted in arguing or rehearsing matters, which have long passed beyond the province of controversy. The work of the specialist is rarely attractive to the public, because it is not only technical but destructive and seems to surround one with pitfalls and uncertainty. It is the work of the expositor to search solid ground and the task is often as thankless as it is laborious. He must popularise as far as possible, the knowledge hid away in dusty tomes, and scattered in home and foreign magazines, as well as in scientific journals. Comparative Studies in History of Religions by Erik Reenberg Sand,Jørgen Podemann Sørensen Pdf

It was Max Müller who coined the famous motto of the comparative study of religion "He who knows one, knows none." Since its first beginning in the second half of the nineteenth century, the history of religions has always somehow invoked comparative insights as its very raison d'être. The nature of these insights has been under constant debate and at times, scepticism and devastating critique of the more pretentious comparative projects made regionally specialized studies seem the only legitimate enterprise within the discipline. The fact remains, however, that the major general issues addressed by historians of religions are rooted in considerations of a comparative nature. The dossier of papers from an international conference held at the University of Copenhagen discusses tradition as well as new approaches to the fundamental issues of the aim, scope and validity of comparative studies in history of religions. No longer bound to monolithic visions of history and human nature, these papers critically explore the limits and the roles of comparison in the study of religion.

Comparative Religion, Its Method and Scope by Louis Henry Jordan Pdf

Excerpt from Comparative Religion, Its Method and Scope: A Paper Read (in Part) At the Third International Congress of the History of Religions, Oxford, September 17, 1908 A difficult problem has been confronting students of religion for a considerable period, and the embarrassment of the situation has been steadily growing. If we shall find ourselves able to reach and register a verdict, or if our present discussion should succeed only in making more clear the principles that underlie a widely prevalent diversity of opinion, we shall assist in removing an issue by which many are still perplexed, and in lending impetus to a line of inquiry that desires and deserves our help. To me, it is a source of unbounded satisfaction that room has been made in our programme, this year, for several papers that deal expressly with Comparative Religion. One reader has chosen for his subject 'A Science of Comparative Religion,' and I know in advance that he is going to bring us an affirmative answer to that query. It has long been one of my dreams that I might yet see this vast and expanding department of investigation accorded that place and prominence to which it is entitled. The action of the Executive Committee of this Congress - their courageous new departure, reference to which has already been made - cannot fail to contribute materially towards the realization of this hope. Further subdivision of the work undertaken by these quadrennial conferences will eventually follow, with results of the very first importance for the prosecution of our studies. I. The Methods and Scope of the Science of Religion. - It is desirable that, for a moment, we should make a retrospective glance. Let us recall, as a preliminary step, the methods and scope of the Science of Religion. It is essential that one or two of the considerations which such a survey suggests should be clearly borne in mind. By 'The Science of Religion' we mean that increasing group of studies, diverse yet closely interrelated, by which man is seeking to unravel the mystery of his religious acts and aspirations. In particular, the Science of Religion is the product of the deliberate investigation of the facts of religion - and of all the facts, whatever their relative age, number, or consequence - when these data are dealt with in accordance with some clearly defined scientific method. These methods have varied very greatly, and naturally they have been applied with varying degrees of proficiency. How to do Comparative Religion? by René Gothóni Pdf

Well-known scholars in the study of religions bring up to date and elucidate the discussion on the three most debated approaches in comparative religion, namely, the hermeneutical approach, the explanatory or cognitivist approach, and the critical approach. The approaches and methods of studying religion are disputed in an outspoken and challenging way, critically and radically arguing pros and cons. This work is unique, unrivalled, and full of essential insights into the dialogue of today and of the challenges of tomorrow.

Interreligious Comparisons in Religious Studies and Theology by Perry Schmidt-Leukel,Andreas Nehring Pdf

Can religions be compared? For decades the discipline of religious studies was based on the assumption that they can. Postmodern and postcolonial reflections, however, raised significant doubts. In social and cultural studies the investigation of the particular often took precedence over a comparative perspective. Interreligious Comparisons in Religious Studies and Theology questions whether religious studies can survive if it ceases to be comparative religion. Can it do justice to a globalized world if it is limited on the specific and turns a blind eye on the general? While comparative approaches have come under strong pressure in religious studies, they have started flourishing in Theology. Comparative theology practices interfaith dialogue by means of comparative research. This volume asks whether theology and religious studies are able to mutually benefit from their critical and constructive reflections. Can postcolonial criticism of neutrality and objectivity in religious studies create new links with the decidedly perspectival approach of comparative theology? In this collection scholars from theology and religious studies discuss the methodology of interreligious comparison in the light of recent doubts and current objections. Together with the contributors, Perry Schmidt-Leukel and Andreas Nehring argue that after decades of critique, interreligious comparison deserves to be reconsidered, reconstructed and reintroduced.

Religion in the Making by Arie L. Molendijk,Peter Pels Pdf

This volume explores the ways in which religion became the object of scientific research in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Most obvious is the development of an increasingly autonomous science of religion (with founding fathers like Max Müller and C.P. Tiele). However, within anthropology (Tylor, Frazer), sociology (Durkheim, Max Weber), and psychology (William James), religion also came to be seen as a separate entity to be studied comparatively. To capture this wide field this book focuses on the emergence of the discourse on religion in a broad academic context, among different disciplines. The emphasis is on general socio-historical developments, rather than on individual biographies. Part I deals with the institutionalization of science of religion in France, Britain, and the Netherlands. Part II focuses on boundary disputes between the emerging "sciences of religion". Part III examines new conceptualizations of religion underlying the new endeavour ("ritual", "magic", "survival").
