Shot in Oklahoma by John Wooley Pdf

When inventor and movie studio pioneer Thomas Edison wanted to capture western magic on film in 1904, where did he send his crew? To Oklahoma's 101 Ranch near Ponca City. And when Francis Ford Coppola readied young actors Tom Cruise and Matt Dillon to portray teen class strife in the 1983 movie The Outsiders, he took cast and crew to Tulsa, the setting of S. E. Hinton's acclaimed novel. From Edison to Coppola and beyond, Oklahoma has served as both backdrop and home base for cinematic productions. The only book to chronicle the history of made-in-Oklahoma films, John Wooley's Shot in Oklahoma explores the variety, spunk, and ingenuity of moviemaking in the Sooner State over more than a century. Wooley's trek through cinematic history, buttressed by meticulous research and interviews, hits the big films readers have heard of—but maybe didn't realize were shot in the state—along with lesser-known offerings. We also get the films' intriguing backstories. For instance, President Theodore Roosevelt's fascination with a man purportedly able to catch a wolf in his hands led to The Wolf Hunt, shot in the Wichita Mountains and screened in the White House in 1909. Over time, homegrown movies such as Where the Red Fern Grows (1974, 2003) have given way to feature films including The Outsiders and Rain Man (1988). Throughout this tale, Wooley draws attention to unsung aspects of state and cinematic history, including early all-black movies lensed in Oklahoma's African American towns and films starring American Indian leads. With a nod to more recent Hollywood productions such as Twister (1996) and Elizabethtown (2005), Wooley ultimately explores how a low-budget slasher movie created in Oklahoma in the 1980s transformed the movie business worldwide. Punctuated with photographs and including a filmography of more than one hundred productions filmed in the state, Shot in Oklahoma offers movie lovers and historians alike an engaging ride through untold cinematic history.

The Oxford Handbook of Musical Theatre Screen Adaptations by Dominic McHugh Pdf

Hollywood's conversion to sound in the 1920s created an early peak in the film musical, following the immense success of The Jazz Singer. The opportunity to synchronize moving pictures with a soundtrack suited the musical in particular, since the heightened experience of song and dance drew attention to the novelty of the technological development. Until the near-collapse of the genre in the 1960s, the film musical enjoyed around thirty years of development, as landmarks such as The Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St Louis, Singin' in the Rain, and Gigi showed the exciting possibilities of putting musicals on the silver screen. The Oxford Handbook of Musical Theatre Screen Adaptations traces how the genre of the stage-to-screen musical has evolved, starting with screen adaptations of operettas such as The Desert Song and Rio Rita, and looks at how the Hollywood studios in the 1930s exploited the publication of sheet music as part of their income. Numerous chapters examine specific screen adaptations in depth, including not only favorites such as Annie and Kiss Me, Kate but also some of the lesser-known titles like Li'l Abner and Roberta and problematic adaptations such as Carousel and Paint Your Wagon. Together, the chapters incite lively debates about the process of adapting Broadway for the big screen and provide models for future studies.

Staring at Sound: The True Story of Oklahoma's Fabulous Flaming Lips by Jim DeRogatis Pdf

An engrossing and intimate portrait of the Oklahoma-based psychedelic pop band the Flaming Lips, cult heroes to millions of indie-rock fans. In July 2002, the Flaming Lips released an ambitious album called Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, which merged elements of orchestral pop, electronic dance music, and old-fashioned psychedelic rock with lyrical themes that were simultaneously poignant and philosophical and supremely silly. The album sold a million copies worldwide, introduced the Flaming Lips to a mass audience, and made them one of the best-known cult bands in rock history. Staring at Sound is the tale of the Flaming Lips’s fascinating career (which, in reality, began in 1983) and the many colorful personalities in their orbit, especially Wayne Coyne, their charismatic and visionary founder. Based on hundreds of hours of interviews with the band, it follows the Flaming Lips through the thriving indie-rock underground of the 1980s and the alternative-rock movement of the early ’90s, during which they found fans in such rock legends as Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Robert Plant, and Devo, and respected peers in such acts as the White Stripes, Radiohead, and Beck. It concludes with exclusive coverage of the creation of the group’s latest album, At War with the Mystics.

Oklahoma's Bennie Owen by Gary King Pdf

Before Bob and Barry, even before Bud, there was Bennie, and he might have been the best of them all. He was certainly the most innovative. Best remembered as the mentor of the University of Oklahoma's football team from 1905 through 1926, Bennie Owen also coached baseball and basketball and served as the director of athletics. He retired as intramural director at the age of seventy-five. A visionary and a builder, he exerted the driving force that created the university's Memorial Stadium, one field house, Memorial Union building, men's swimming pool, baseball field and bleachers, concrete tennis courts, nine-hole golf course and intramural playing fields. A true man of all seasons, he laid the foundation for a Sooner tradition of excellence--in football and beyond.

Pitt by Sam Sciullo, Jr. Pdf

From 2001-2004, no Division IA men's college basketball program in the country had a better winning percentage (88-16, .846) than the University of Pittsburgh. Pitt also won (or shared) three consecutive Big East Conference regular-season or tournament championships during that period. Approaching its 100th year of intercollegiate basketball, Pitt could lay claim to the assertion that these were, indeed, a rejuvenation of its glory days. It wasn't always that way. The university--once known as the Western University of PennsylvaniA fielded its first basketball team in 1905-06. The team practiced and played just about anywhere it could find a floor and a couple of hoops. Crowds were small, media coverage was slim, and the future of the program was doubtful. That program officially became known as the University of Pittsburgh's Panthers in 1909. After H.C. Doc Carlson--a former Pitt football and basketball player as well as a physician by trade--became head coach in 1922, the program firmly established itself. In 1925, the Panthers had their first true home facility when they moved into the Pavilion--a gym beneath Pitt Stadium. Carlson would lead the Panthers to a pair of mythical national titles by the end of the 1920s. Pitt: 100 Years of Pitt Basketball is the definitive history of basketball at the University of Pittsburgh. From Charley Hyatt, Doc Carlson's first All-American, through sure and steady point guard Brandin Knight, some of college basketball's most influential players have worn blue and gold. Scoring whiz Don Hennon burst onto the scene in the '50s, followed by rugged Brian Generalovich in the '60s, and silky smooth Billy Knight in the '70s. Sam Bam Clancy helpedturn Pitt's program around in the late '70s, and when Pitt was invited to join the Big East Conference in 1982, the face of the program changed forever. Its rosters and coaching staffs--formerly filled with Pennsylvania boys and men with Pitt backgrounds--would soon include players and coaches from across the nation. Charles Smith and Jerome Lane gave Pitt a dynamic one--two inside punch-and a pair of Big East titles--in the 1980s. And when Ben Howland left Northern Arizona in 1999 to coach the Panthers, aided by a young assistant named Jamie Dixon, Pitt basketball was on the cusp of college basketball greatness.
