Shotgun Sheriff by Delores Fossen Pdf

Comanche Creek's not big enough for two to investigate a murder. That's the feeling Texas Ranger Livvy Hutton gets when she's sent there as a forensic expert. Yes, she's horning in on Sheriff Reed Hardin's territory and can't ignore a distinct chill in the air between them. But according to evidence Livvy uncovers, she senses the cowboy cop's acting ornery to protect his good ol' boys from arrest for the murder. And backing off is not in her nature. Then, just days into the investigation, Livvy detects bigger trouble: a mutual attraction she and Reed have no business acting on. A torrid affair could compromise the case…or spark some much needed—and very satisfying—cooperation!

The Sheriff's Legacy by Linn Keller Pdf

Firelands County, Colorado, just hired a new Sheriff. Firelands County, Colorado, knew their new Sheriff was a Marine, a Gulf War veteran, and was recently graduated from college; they sent their chief deputy to pick up Sheriff Will Keller from the airport. Firelands County, Colorado, did not know their Sheriff would arrive in a tailored, dark-blue suit dress, and high heels. In the Sheriff's first half-hour in-county,she uses a shotgun to stop a barfight, slams a drunk face-first into the painted plasterboard, arrests the Mayor and tells the Board of County Commissioners which of them is an adulterer, with whom and how many times; which of them is a gambler, how much he has lost at the tracks, and at which track; she lets them know in no uncertain terms exactly where they can get off, and proceeds to run her department as she pleases. The Sheriff is here to do a job, and she doesn't fight fair. And she doesn't -- whether it's drug traffickers, a crooked prosecutor, a fiancee or getting justice, Sheriff Willamina Keller gets what she wants. Peacefully, or otherwise. She doesn't care which.

Tales from Kentucky Sheriffs by William Lynwood Montell Pdf

“Wildly funny and deeply tragic . . . these tales chronicle each sheriff’s journey from youth to election to office and, occasionally, into retirement.” —Wayne County Outlook Following the success of his collections of stories from funeral directors, schoolteachers, doctors, and lawyers, folklorist William Lynwood Montell presents a new volume of tales from Kentucky sheriffs. Montell collected stories from all areas of the state to represent the diversity of social and economic backgrounds in the various communities the officers serve. Tales from Kentucky Sheriffs covers elections, criminal behavior, and sheriff’s mistakes in a lighthearted and often humorous manner. The book includes accounts of a drunk driver who thought he was in a different state, a sheriff running a sting operation with the US Marshals, and a woman reporting a tomato thief in her garden. Other accounts involve procedural errors with serious consequences, such as the tale of a sheriff who mistakenly informs a man that his son has committed suicide. Together, these firsthand narratives preserve important aspects of Kentucky’s history not likely to be recorded elsewhere. “The stories Montell collected fill up nearly 300 pages and range from humorous mishaps during incidents and interesting criminal behavior to the more somber topic of death in the line of duty.” —Central Kentucky News-Journal “The numerous experiences shared by the people interviewed cover several decades and provide a very enlightening look into the world of Kentucky county-level law enforcement.” —Kentucky Ancestors “[Montell] has once again mined an important element of the state’s culture with utter transparency, and has—once again—done the state proud.” —Kentucky Monthly

A former forensic photographer and author of Murder in the Midlands chronicles horrific killings that struck at the heart of the Palmetto State. Ax assault, kidnapping, brutal murder: how could these things happen in a small town? Although regional crimes hardly ever make it to the national circuit, they will always remain with the families and communities of the victims and a part of the area’s history. After working with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division as special agent/forensic photographer for twenty-four years, Rita Shuler has a passion for remembering the victims. In Small-town Slayings, Shuler takes us back in time, showing differences and similarities of crime solving in the past and present and some surprising twists of court proceedings, verdicts, and sentences. From an unsolved case that has haunted her for thirty years to a cold case that was solved after fifteen years by advanced DNA technology, Shuler blends her own memories with extensive research, resulting in a fast-paced, factual, and fascinating look at crime in South Carolina. Chester's Last Ride by Nathan Wright Pdf

Chester’s Last Ride by Nathan Wright Nathan Wright has written a stirring adventure story in the best tradition of the western novel. It relates the difficult journey of Zeke Conley from Kentucky and his half-wolf dog, Big Ben, as they wander the frontiers for treasure and excitement. At last, Conley and his ever-faithful companion return home to help his family fight off swindlers and desperadoes. Here, there is rousing action enough to satisfy any reader, but it is in its depiction of the hardships and rewards of life in nature that Chester’s Last Ride rises to true inspiration as it conveys the feel of such details as the refuge of a campfire on a freezing night under the barren sky or the comradeship of a fellow’s horse and his big dog.

Faces on the Clock by Larry Bauer-Scandin Pdf

This guy is tough, and so is his message. (By Ruben Rosario, Pioneer Press, St. Paul, MN August 2011. Edited for length) Like the U.S. Postal Service, apparently nothing keeps Larry Bauer-Scandin - foster dad to 125 - from his self-appointed rounds. Not the weather. Not the heart ailments or the genetic neurological disorder that robbed him of movement and rendered him legally blind. The 64-year-old Vadnais Heights resident just gets up and does it. "My life was normal for the first nine years of my life until 1957 when my foot went to sleep, except that my foot never woke up," Bauer-Scandin told a group of inmates from the 3100 unit at the Dakota County Jail. But that's not the main message that Bauer-Scandin, a retired probation officer and jail counselor, wants to deliver on this day. "Whom do you blame for your problems?" he asks the group of 34 men, who are members of IMC, or Inmates Motivated to Change. Under the program, inmates with chemical dependency or mostly nonviolent offenses sign an agreement to take part in several programs and pledge not to make the same mistakes that keep landing them in lock-up. "What people need to do is stand in front of a mirror and ask: 'How much of the problem is mine and how much is it somebody else?' " I first wrote about Bauer-Scandin five years ago. It was centered on his life as a foster parent. As he told the inmates, two of his former foster kids are cops, one in St. Paul. Two are soldiers deployed to Iraq. One's a millionaire. One's an author. Most are raising families or staying out of trouble in spite of hardships. But "15 are dead," said Bauer-Scandin, author of "Faces on the Clock," an engrossing memoir about his life. The dead include suicide victims, including an 11-year-old, others from AIDS and "my last one, they found in three or four pieces, as I understand." Bauer-Scandin's worth writing about again for what he continues to do at great pain and sacrifice without pay or fanfare. He didn't sugarcoat or pull punches with his audience. "What I'm afraid is still happening is that the system is trying to figure out how to get tighter," he told them. "The sentences are getting tougher." And it's not the police, the sheriffs, the courts or even the folks in state and county-run corrections that are responsible for the race to incarcerate. "It's the legislature," Bauer-Scandin said. "And legislatures have been known to do very stupid things." He also faults the media and a gullible public that forms opinions and dehumanizes people strictly on what they watch on TV and not on real-life experiences or knowledge. "What do they see?" he said. "They see the Charlie Mansons. They see the unusual. They see the extreme. Most of you aren't that way. But that's what makes the news." Yet he doesn't divert from his main message: It's up to the inmate to take a positive step and choose the right way. "Get yourself back into a position where you can influence those people, to be able to go to a school board or a city council or legislative meeting and have your voice heard. "You can't fight the system from in here," he concluded. "You have to be out there." The inmates applauded and, one by one, stood in line to shake his hand on his way out the jail complex. His progressively debilitating disorder is taking more of a toll these days. But he steered the scooter inside the van and deftly wiggled his frail body into the driver's seat. He has no complaints, he told me. He will continue to go out and speak as long as God and his wife allow him. "I hope something stuck," he tells me before he drives off. I hope so too, Larry.
