The coastal belts and hinterlands of East Africa and South Asia have historically shared a number of cultural traits, commodities and cosmologies circulated on the wings of the monsoon winds. The forced and voluntary migrations of Asians and Africans across the Indian Ocean littoral over several centuries have reverberated in the memories, literatures, travelogues and religious, architectural, and socio-political imaginations of both the regions. And, they continue to do so in various forms and platforms. This book explores nuances of various narratives on these long-term transcultural exchanges with a special focus on India. It explores the ways in which Africa and Africans have been narrated in South Asian history and culture in order to unravel the nuanced layers of reflexive, rhetorical, stereotypical, populist, racialist, racist and casteist frameworks that informed diverse narratives in vernacular texts, songs, films and newspaper reports. Emphasizing the interdisciplinary approaches of narratology, Afro-Asian studies, and Indian Ocean studies, the contributors enunciate how the African lives in South Asia have been selectively remembered or systematically forgotten. This edited collection disrupts dominant narratives about space, states, and borders, bringing comparative ethnographic and geographic scholarship in conversation with one another to illuminate the varied ways in which space becomes socialized via political, economic, and cognitive appropriation. Societies must, first and foremost, do more than wrangle over ownership and land rights — they must dwell in space. Yet, historically the interactions between the state’s territorial imperative with previous forms of landscape management have unfolded in a variety of ways, including top-down imposition, resistance, and negotiation between local and external actors. These interactions have resulted in hybrid forms of territoriality, and are often fraught with fundamentally different perceptions of landscape. This book foregrounds these experiences and draws attention to situations in which different social constructions of space and territory coincide, collide, or overlap. Each ethnographic case in this volume presents forms of territoriality that are contingent upon contested histories, politics, landscape, the presence or absence of local heterogeneity and the involvement of multiple external actors with differing motivations — ultimately all resulting in the potential for conflict or collaboration and divergent implications for conceptions of community, autochthony and identity.

Fundamental institutions are core values that originate from beliefs. Beliefs reflect on behaviors and repeated behaviors become habits. Shared habits are peoples’ values, which when ingrained become norms and customs. Societies that believed in human interdependency formed collective institutions. These institutions are compatible with modern economic prosperity. Thus, Contrary to conventional economic teaching, which implies that behaviors, including preferences are biologically determined, all socially relevant behaviors, including economic behaviors are acquired, learned and routinized through habits (institutions) in which individuals find themselves. Again, contrary to popular beliefs that economics is about “pursuit of self-interest” as stipulated by Adam Smith (1776), the “pursuit of self-interest” does not translate to selfishness. For example, an entrepreneur relies on public capitals and skilled labors to succeed; a producer relies on adequate consumption to produce at capacity; a firm’s profit is enhanced with higher consumer income, etc. Therefore, capitalism is a function of collective institutions. Collectivism is a solution to group interdependency. People sharing the same space are interdependent and are faced with interdependency costs. Interdependency cost equals external cost plus decision making cost. Failures to eliminate or minimize external costs (externalities) through collectivization of activities result to resource misallocation. The problem of sub-Saharan Africa. Moreover, modern development theories are constructed around macroeconomic variables. Money, banking, interest rate, savings, trade liberalization, financial assets, deficit and debt management are modern macroeconomic development tools. These are based on aggregation of data and variables. Thus, collectivism is more pronounced in macroeconomic policies. Yet, many emerging nations of sub-Saharan Africa, do not find it mandatory to build all-inclusive economies by mobilizing resources en masse.
