Excerpt from Shĕmets Dávár: A Rabbinic Reading-Book What may be called the Text of the First Chap ter consists of a few very easy extracts from the Book of 'j ashar' or 'j Osher.' These extracts are not of much importance - they serve chiefly as offer ing pegs, so to speak, on which to hang some Notes which perhaps may be of more importance to the Student than the extracts themselves. In the first extract we are told that Noah and Methuselah were bid to call to repentance the people of the times before the Flood, and to promise that if they would repent the threatened destruction should not take place. In the last of the long lines on p. 1 the declaration is given that a fixed time of a hundred-and-twenty years was to be allowed them for repenting and forsaking their evil ways.[on this interval of a hundred-and-twenty years a Note, begun in the double columns below, is continued on the following pages.] The extract ends with an account of their refusing to attend to the warnings addressed to them. After the remark "with regard to the tribunal of a wicked one" mentioned above, there follows immediately "But is it indeed the case that Esau is a Cushite?" And to this the reply is given "Nay but the meaning is that he has acted as Nimrod did (lit. like the doing of Nimrod." Gen. x. 9 is cited in support, stress being laid specially on the "as" before "Nimrod" there.--Then on the statement that 'Esau' has acted in such a Nimrod-like manner the Question is asked "How so?"; and to this the Reply is given: "The one (lit. this, i.e. Nimrod) caught the people for his prey by their mouth; also the other (lit. this, i.e. the 'Esau '-enemy) has caught the people by their mouth;" and two examples are then given of the mode in which the 'enemy' has been in the habit of 'catching' people by their mouth, thus. With seeming kindness, and apparently wishing to recognize fully the innocence of the lamb-like Israelite before the wolfish tribunal, the oppressor says "Oh yes, I see, You are entirely innocent, you have not been concerned in any robbery,"--but then suddenly, so as to catch him into betraying himself.unawares, "Who is it now that committed the robbery along with you?" And so, "Oh yes, it is quite clear, I see that you have not been concerned in murder at all,"--but then suddenly, to catch him unawares, "Who is it that was concerned in the murder along with you?"--No reply on the part of the Israelite is given. And it is understood, of course, that he is convicted and condemned as guilty, and punished, --'while...
