Sidelights on the History, Industries and Social Life of Scotland (Classic Reprint) by Louis A. Barbé Pdf

Excerpt from Sidelights on the History, Industries and Social Life of Scotland In respect of their subject-matter, the score of essays contained in this volume divide themselves into two distinct classes. Those that have been brought to gether in the first part deal with certain matters of intrinsic interest, though of minor importance, in the history of Scotland, or with individuals connected with it as secondary and therefore comparatively little known characters. The second part consists of a number of papers that convey some notion of the social and industrial condition of the country, mainly, though not quite exclusively, prior to the Union. It will also be found that the studies which constitute the first section fall into two separate groups. The former of these is illustrative of the relations between Scotland and France under the reigns of James I and James II. For the latter, materials have been gathered from that of James IV. Edinburgh and the Reformation by Michael Lynch Pdf

Edinburgh's reformation was one of the last of the great city reformations of the sixteenth century. It took on a highly distinctive shape due to the burgh's social and economic problems and its position as a cockpit for English policy in Scotland and the shifting factionalism of Scottish politics. In studies of the Scottish Reformation, too little attention has been paid to the nature of Scottish society itself. In a society so conscious of rank, tradition and precedent, the Reformation was only likely to make progress where it did not disturb the existing order, and in Edinburgh the new religion was obliged to work within the natural constraints of burgh life. This book shows that the early promise of the Protestant reformers of a new society provoked a backlash and had to be abandoned for a new conciliatory approach. The result was that power remained in much the same hands in the 1580s as it had in the 1540s, with one real difference – there was more of it.

The Early Modern Town in Scotland by Michael Lynch Pdf

Originally published in 1987, this volume filled a notable gap in Scottish urban history and considers the place of Scottish towns in urban life during the 16th and 17th Centuries. The first part of the book is based on studies of individual burghs (Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Perth) drawing extensively on archival material. The second part includes a discussion of the pressure put upon the burghs by the town between 1500 and 1650, a process which contributed to the destruction of the medieval burgh and examines the burgh during the Scottish Revolution. The impact of war and plague on Scottish towns in the 1640s is also analysed and much emphasis is given to the relationship between town and country.

She is But a Woman by Fiona Anne Downie Pdf

She is but a Woman, the first in-depth study of medieval Scottish queens, investigates the relationship between gender and power in the medieval Scottish court by exploring the art of queenship as practised by Joan Beaufort and Mary of Guelders, queens of James I and James II. These women were excluded from authority but clearly possessed power as wives and mothers of kings. They established and cultivated relationships with members of the court, learned about Scottish political life and supported their husbands in the business of government. The book examines for the first time the arrivals of Joan and Mary in Scotland, their social and political status, their relationships with their husbands and families, and their roles in international diplomacy. This modern re-evaluation of the role and power of the medieval queen is a thematic exploration rather than a biographical study. It situates the experiences of Joan and Mary within a broader European context and provides a new perspective on Scotland's political, social and cultural links with Europe in the fifteenth century.

Scotland and the Low Countries 1124–1994 by Grant G. Simpson Pdf

This collection of essays presents historical approaches to the links which have existed for over 800 years between Scotland and one of the areas of continental Europe closest to her: the Low Countries. Topics include: Flemish settlers in twelfth-century Scotland; the Count of Holland who claimed the Scottish throne in 1291; the Flemish aspect of the Auld Alliance with France; the view of Scotland taken by a Netherlands-born chronicler, Jean Froissart; Scotland's late-medieval involvement in diplomacy with Guelders and in wool-exports to the Netherlands; the contacts of Scottish patrons with Netherlandish painters in the 15th and 16th centuries; Scots pursuing military careers and studies in the arts and law in the Low Countries in early modern times; parallels between Belgian Art Nouveau painting and the work of some Glasgow artists around 1900; comparisons between Scotland and the Low Countries in the 20th century in the realms of social housing and oil exploration. These varied studies add detailed background to the subject of Scotland within Europe: a question now much debated. This volume is the third in the Mackie Monographs series, based on the Mackie Symposia held in the University of Aberdeen, which have as their theme the historical study of Scotland's overseas contacts.

Women in Scotland c.1100-c.1750 by Elizabeth L. Ewan,Maureen M. Meikle Pdf

This collection of essays addresses women in Scotland in the medieval and early modem period, drawing on archival sources from Court of Session records to Middle Scots poetry. The editors argue persuasively that it is important to know about Scotswomen from all social levels. The book includes a time line and introductory bibliographical essay. The twenty essays in the collection are arranged under the themes of religion, literature, legal history, the economy, politics and the family. They demonstrate the connections between Scottish women's experience and those in England and the continent, as well as highlighting what was unique for the history of Scottish women. Through this comprehensive review of the feminine situation during more than six hundred years of Scottish history, the reader will discover how women really lived and what they really thought, whatever their place in society.

Fresche fontanis by J. Derrick McClure,Janet Hadley Williams Pdf

Fresche fontanis contains twenty-five studies presenting major new research by leading scholars in Scottish culture of the late fourteenth and fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries. The three-part collection includes essays on the prominent writers of the period: James I, Robert Henryson, William Dunbar, John Bellenden, David Lyndsay, John Stewart of Baldynneis, William Fowler, Alexander Montgomerie, Andrew Melville and Alexander Craig. There are also essays on the Scottish romances Lancelot of the Laik, Gilbert Hay’s Buik of King Alexander the Conquerour, The Buik of Alexander, Golagros and Gawain, and the comedic Rauf Coilyear, and the Scottish fabliau The Freiris of Berwick. Chronicles of Fordun, Bower, Wyntoun and Bellenden receive fresh attention in essays concerning Margaret of Scotland, and imperial ideas during the reign of James V. Essays on anthologies, family books, and collaborative compilations make another notable group, providing in-depth analysis, with findings not previously reported, of The Book of the Dean of Lismore, the Maitland Quarto manuscript and The Delitiae Poetarum Scotorum. These studies are enlarged by others on key contextualizing topics, including noble and royal literary patronage, early Scottish printing, performance, spectatorship, and translation. Together they make a significant contribution to a full understanding of the continuities and shifts in cultural emphases during this most imaginatively productive period.

The Scottish Migration to Ulster in the Reign of James I by M. Perceval-Maxwell Pdf

Originally published in 1973, the emphasis of this study is on the Scottish settlers during the first quarter of the 17th Century. It shows that the ‘Plantation’, although a milestone in Ireland’s past is also of considerable importance in Scotland’s history. The society that produced Scottish settlers is examined and the reasons why they left their homeland analysed. The book explains what effect the Scottish migration had upon both Ireland and Scotland and assesses the extent to which James I was personally involved in the promotion of the ‘Plantation’ scheme.
