Siege of Bryan's Station and the Battle of Blue Licks by Reuben T. Durrett,Bennett H. Young,Henry T. Stanton Pdf

A bloody episode of the Kentucky border By 1782 the American War of Independence was all but coming to its close and with it the birth of a new nation and the loss of an important colony for the British. The frontier settlements of Kentucky lay at the farthest reaches of European expansion, far away from the principal towns and cities of the established states, on the eastern seaboard of the continent. This was the frontier of its day where isolated farms, stockades, forts and villages were constantly in peril of attack by Indian tribes, their white allies and the British. Bryan's Station (sometimes called Bryant's Station) was a fortified settlement of forty cabins founded in 1775 on the Elkhorn Creek. It withstood attack on several occasions but in 1782, ten months after Cornwallis had surrendered at Yorktown, it came under siege by Canadian British forces under Caldwell, the renegade Simon Girty and 300 Shawnee Indians. The event was notable for an outstanding feat of bravery by the women of the settlement-which is of course recounted here in detail. When the besiegers discovered that relief was on its way in the form of the local militia they withdrew. After a pursuit of some 60 miles the British and their allies turned and lay in ambush. The combat that followed, known as the Battle of Blue Licks was disastrous for the Americans who lost 83 killed or captured for negligible loss among their enemy. Despite warnings from the veteran frontiersman Daniel Boone, who was with them, the militia blundered into the ambush losing nearly half their number including Boone's son, Israel, and the expedition's commanders, Todd and Trigg. Boone barely escaped on horseback, abandoning the body of his son who was mortally wounded in the neck. The engagement, the worse defeat suffered by Kentuckians during the war effectively ended the conflict in the east. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

History of the Battle of Blue Licks by Bennett Henderson Young Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Battle of Blue Licks: August 19, 1782 Here is nothing more glorious or more heroic in all Kentucky's history than the siege of Bryant's Station, nor is there any thing more tragic or more dreadful in that same history than the Battle of the Blue Licks: The one was the sequel to the other. Hardly had the plaudits of the pioneers for the women of Bryant's Station died on the stillness of the sultry August air ere summer breezes carried the story of the awful carnage and destruction at the Battle of the Blue Licks, from the valley of the Licking, by the buffalo traces, to the settlements on the Kentucky River. Historical Dictionary of the American Revolution by Terry M. Mays Pdf

The American Revolution pitted 13 loosely united colonies in a military, political, and economic struggle against Great Britain: the "mother country" and arguably the most powerful state in the world during the late 18th century. The independent spirit that led many individuals to leave homes in Europe and settle in the New World during the 17th and 18th centuries evolved into the drive that persuaded these same settlers and their descendants to challenge the colonial economic and taxation policies of Great Britain, which lead to the armed conflict that resulted in a declaration of independence. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of the American Revolution contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1,000 cross-referenced entries on the politics, battles, weaponry, and major personalities of the war. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the American Revolution.

The Trans-Appalachian Wars, 1790-1818 by John Eric Vining Pdf

Much is known about the American Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Relatively little is known about the wars to conquer the Trans-Appalachian West; the area between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. Yet, in terms of political ramifications and intrigue, military strategies and tactics, and interactions between different entities and individuals, these campaigns rank high on the scale of complexity and interest. Just as other wars highlighted great generals; Washington, Lee, and Grant, and memorable battles; Spotsylvania, The Bulge, and The Persian Gulf Flank Run, the Trans-Appalachian Wars had impressive features as well. These wars encompassed the five action phases: The Indian (or Woodland) Wars, 1790-1795, The War of 1812 in the Old Northwest, 1811-1813, The Creek War, 1813-1814, The War of 1812 in the Old Southwest, 1814-1815, and The Stabilization of the Gulf Coast, 1811-1818. They brought to the fore three great generals; Mad Anthony Wayne, William Henry Harrison, and Andrew Jackson, who fought and won five great battles: The Battle of Fallen Timbers, August 20, 1794; The Battle of Tippecanoe, November 7, 1811; The Battle of the Thames, October 8, 1813; The Battle of Horseshoe Bend, March 27, 1814; and The Battle of New Orleans, January 8, 1815.

Guide to the Draper Manuscripts by Josephine L. Harper Pdf

In the mid-nineteenth century the Wisconsin Historical Society's first director, Lyman C. Draper, gathered outstanding materials such as the Daniel Boone papers, which include Draper's interviews with Boone's son, and the papers of Revolutionary War hero George Rogers Clark. These two collections alone are of vast significance to frontier history before 1830, but the full collection comprises nearly five hundred volumes of records, including military and government records, interviews, Draper's own research notes, and rare personal letters. For scholars, genealogists, and local historians, the Draper papers offer a wealth of information on the social, economic, and cultural conditions experienced by our frontier forebears. The 180-page index lists thousands of names and is an indispensable guide for all who wish to use the collection, which is available in libraries across the country on microfilm.

Gamble Rogers by Bruce Horovitz Pdf

Florida Book Awards, Bronze Medal for Florida Nonfiction Florida Historical Society Charlton Tebeau Award Beloved raconteur, environmentalist, and down-home philosopher, Gamble Rogers (1937–1991) ushered in a renaissance of folk music to a place and time that desperately needed it. In this book, Bruce Horovitz tells the story of how Rogers infused Florida's rapidly commercializing landscape with a refreshing dose of homegrown authenticity and how his distinctive music and personality touched the nation. As a college student, motivated by personal advice from William Faulkner to stay true to himself, Rogers broke away from his family's prestigious architecture business. Rogers was a skilled guitar player and storyteller who soon began performing extensively on the national folk music circuit alongside Pete Seeger, Doc Watson, and Jimmy Buffett. He discovered a special knack for public radio, appearing frequently as a guest commentator on NPR’s All Things Considered. Rogers was known across the country for his intricate fingerpicking guitar style and rapid-fire stage act. Audiences welcomed his humorous homespun tales set in the fictitious Oklawaha County, which was based on places from his own upbringing and populated by a cast of unforgettable characters. His stories evoked rural life in Florida, celebrated the state's natural resources, and called attention to life's many small ironies. As Florida was experiencing colossal growth embodied by the new Kennedy Space Center and Disney World, Rogers's folksy style cheered and reassured listeners in the state who worried that their traditional livelihoods and locales were disappearing. Horovitz shows that even beyond his genius as a performing artist, Rogers was loved for his compassion, integrity, connection with people, and courage. Rogers displayed these widely admired traits for the last time when—on a camping trip to the beach—he tried to save a drowning stranger despite back problems that made it almost impossible for him to swim. This heroic effort led to his untimely death. The life of Gamble Rogers is a window into an important creative subculture that continues to flourish today as contemporary folk artists take on roles similar to the one Rogers established for himself. A modern-day troubadour, Rogers delighted in entertaining audiences with what was familiar and real—by championing the ordinary people of his home community who were closest to his heart.
