Sight by Jessie Greengrass Pdf

SHORTLISTED FOR THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION 2018 'A dazzling obsessive entry in a burgeoning genre. Unusual and absorbing... the novel as a whole exudes a strange consoling power.' – The New Yorker 'Sight delves into a lot in under 200 pages: mothers and daughters, birth and death, loss and grief, finding one's balance, the ardor and arduousness of scientific discovery. Readers willing to give themselves over to Greengrass' penetrating vision will surely expand theirs.' – NPR 'With visceral, elegantly wrought truths of life and loss, this is an exciting companion to Sheila Heti's recent Motherhood (2018).' – Booklist In Jessie Greengrass' dazzlingly brilliant debut novel, our unnamed narrator recounts her progress to motherhood, while remembering the death of her own mother ten years before, and the childhood summers she spent with her psychoanalyst grandmother. Woven among these personal recollections are significant events in medical history: Wilhelm Rontgen’s discovery of the X-ray; Sigmund Freud’s development of psychoanalysis and the work that he did with his daughter, Anna; and the origins of modern surgery and the anatomy of pregnant bodies. Sight is a novel about being a parent and a child: what it is like to bring a person in to the world, and what it is to let one go. Exquisitely written and fiercely intelligent, it is an incisive exploration of how we see others, and how we might know ourselves.

Language at the Speed of Sight by Mark Seidenberg Pdf

In this "important and alarming" book, see why so many American students are falling behind in their reading skills while others around the world excel (New York Times). In 2011, when an international survey reported that students in Shanghai dramatically outperformed American students in reading, math, and science, President Obama declared it a "Sputnik moment": a wake-up call about the dismal state of American education. Little has changed, however, since then: over half of our children still read at a basic level and few become highly proficient. Many American children and adults are not functionally literate, with serious consequences. Poor readers are more likely to drop out of the educational system and as adults are unable to fully participate in the workforce, adequately manage their own health care, or advance their children's education. In Language at the Speed of Sight, internationally renowned cognitive scientist Mark Seidenberg reveals the underexplored science of reading, which spans cognitive science, neurobiology, and linguistics. As Seidenberg shows, the disconnect between science and education is a major factor in America's chronic underachievement. How we teach reading places many children at risk of failure, discriminates against poorer kids, and discourages even those who could have become more successful readers. Children aren't taught basic print skills because educators cling to the disproved theory that good readers guess the words in texts, a strategy that encourages skimming instead of close reading. Interventions for children with reading disabilities are delayed because parents are mistakenly told their kids will catch up if they work harder. Learning to read is more difficult for children who speak a minority dialect in the home, but that is not reflected in classroom practices. By building on science's insights, we can improve how our children read, and take real steps toward solving the inequality that illiteracy breeds. Both an expert look at our relationship with the written word and a rousing call to action, Language at the Speed of Sight is essential for parents, educators, policy makers, and all others who want to understand why so many fail to read, and how to change that.

Love At First Sight by Rebecca Merz Pdf

After the death of her husband, Rebecca turned to God for everything. She was alone and needed God more than ever. This personal relationship with God became so intense that she experienced Him in ways she never dreamed were possible. Rebecca's journey began when she became convinced God used a man she named Adam to awaken her passion to be a married lady again. When Rebecca shared every little detail of her life with God, she felt certain God orchestrated the funniest situations to give her confidence as she traveled into unknown territory. She insisted God was being playful with her and wanted her to relax and trust that He was the one that was in control. Those times Rebecca experienced doubt, God did some remarkable things to prove He was with her. As a result she developed a boldness to do what she believed God was asking of her. God always confirmed the decisions she made were the stepping-stones leading to her destiny. She learned God was pleased by her faith that she entrusted to Him alone. God demonstrated two-way communication with Him was not only possible but was necessary in order to turn her dreams into reality. This two-way conversation brought her relationship with God to a deeper level. She knew He had prepared the way that would lead her to her future husband. Rebecca claims God is still in the match making business and is the best dating coach any person could ask for because Father knows best.
