Silent Honor by Danielle Steel Pdf

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel, a moving novel of families separated and lives shattered by prejudice during one of the most shameful episodes in American history. A man ahead of his time, Japanese college professor Masao Takashimaya of Kyoto had a passion for modern ideas that was as strong as his wife’s belief in ancient traditions. His eighteen-year-old daughter, Hiroko, torn between her mother’s traditions and her father’s wishes, boarded the SS Nagoya Maru to come to California for an education and to make her father proud. It was August 1941. From the ship, she went to the Palo Alto home of her uncle, Takeo, and his family. To Hiroko, California was a different world. Her cousins had become more American than Japanese. And much to Hiroko’s surprise, Peter Jenkins, her uncle’s assistant at Stanford, became an unexpected link between her old world and her new. On December 7, Pearl Harbor is bombed by the Japanese. Within hours, war is declared and suddenly Hiroko has become an enemy in a foreign land. On February 19, Executive Order 9066 is signed by President Roosevelt, giving the military the power to remove the Japanese from their communities at will. Takeo and his family are given ten days to sell their home, give up their jobs, and report to a relocation center, along with thousands of other Japanese and Japanese Americans, to face their destinies there. Families are divided, people are forced to abandon their homes, their businesses, their freedom, and their lives. Danielle Steel portrays not only the human cost of that terrible time in history, but also the remarkable courage of a people whose honor and dignity transcended the chaos that surrounded them. Silent Honor reveals the stark truth about the betrayal of Americans by their own government . . . and the triumph of a woman caught between cultures and determined to survive.

Recreation by Kanyampa Manda Pdf

An anthology of Poetry and short fiction whose preoccupation is to engage this troubled world, to come to a realization, to forsake its life of vanity and therefore focus onto real issues- the fight against poverty- to raise the status of the least of our brothers to a level of dignity. Thus - ReCreation to remake the world. The introduction to the collection notes the different aspects of the concept of the title, as representing both light diversion and spiritual renewal. This collection accordingly provide for both these aspects, offering pictures of the innocence of everyday life and a readiness to indulge in contemplation. A better idea of the collection’s character would be gained from particular mention of one or two individual poems: This Poetry - a typical twentieth century style poem, moves from an invocation of the setting of its making to more abstract considerations of perfection, harmony and wholeness; Mind, Body and Soul is a remarkable and highly visual sequence of particularities of time, place and landscape, while Who Will Plead for Angola is a more overtly moral and political lament for failed expectations and ideals. A distinctive voice. The verse is dignified, and eloquent in mood and tone, but also visually and metaphorically evocative and very much alive to natural phenomena and human habit and motive. Enjoy.

Baltimore Revisited by P. Nicole King,Kate Drabinski,Joshua Clark Davis Pdf

Nicknamed both “Mobtown” and “Charm City” and located on the border of the North and South, Baltimore is a city of contradictions. From media depictions in The Wire to the real-life trial of police officers for the murder of Freddie Gray, Baltimore has become a quintessential example of a struggling American city. Yet the truth about Baltimore is far more complicated—and more fascinating. To help untangle these apparent paradoxes, the editors of Baltimore Revisited have assembled a collection of over thirty experts from inside and outside academia. Together, they reveal that Baltimore has been ground zero for a slew of neoliberal policies, a place where inequality has increased as corporate interests have eagerly privatized public goods and services to maximize profits. But they also uncover how community members resist and reveal a long tradition of Baltimoreans who have fought for social justice. The essays in this collection take readers on a tour through the city’s diverse neighborhoods, from the Lumbee Indian community in East Baltimore to the crusade for environmental justice in South Baltimore. Baltimore Revisited examines the city’s past, reflects upon the city’s present, and envisions the city’s future.

Opening the Great Depths by Norman C Polmar,Lee J Mathers Pdf

Developed by French physicist Auguste Piccard and his son Jacques, the bathyscaph Trieste was a scientific marvel that allowed unprecedented scientific, technical, and military feats in the ocean depths. France and the United States both acquired and subsequently developed variants of the original bathyscaph. While both France and the United States employed the bathyscaph as a tool for scientific investigation of the deepest ocean depths, the U.S. Navy developed and employed the Trieste for military missions as well. From its earliest years, participants in the Trieste program realized that they were making history, blazing a trail into previously unexplored and unexploited depths, developing new capabilities and opening a new frontier. Comparisons with developments in space and the space-race between the United States and the Soviet Union often were made concerning the Trieste program and contemporary developments in undersea technologies and capabilities. The Trieste opened the entire oceans to exploration, exploitation, and operations. The bathyscaph was a first-generation system, a "Model-T" that spawned an entirely new industry and encouraged new concepts for deep-ocean naval operations. Advances in deep-sea technologies lacked the "gee-whiz" factor of the concurrent space race, but were highly significant in the development of new technology, new knowledge, and new military capabilities. Opening the Great Depths is the story of the three Trieste deep-ocean vehicles, their officers and enlisted men, and the civilians, often told in their own words, documenting for the first time the earliest years of humanity's probing into Earth's final frontier.

The Adventures of an Economic Migrant by Tony Wade Pdf

Who is Anthony Wade and what makes the story of his experiences different or unique from those of the tens of thousands of persons who have migrated from the Caribbean to Britain? Wade's odyssey from the idyllic and unchallenging setting of his homeland of Montserrat in the 1950s to a cold, unfamiliar and racially hostile England is a familiar story among Caribbean migrants of his and later generations. Not so familiar is the intriguing story of how he established the most successful black enterprise in Britain at a time when it was difficult to obtain business financing, penetrate the market for hair and beauty products and gain acceptance in an environment hostile to non-white immigrants. Wade overcame all these obstacles - and more, including the near collapse of his company Dyke and Dryden, following a change in majority ownership - to become one of Britain's first black multi-million pound company and mentor an entire generation of black entrepreneurs. Wade's story is not only about how he achieved phenomenal business success or about the relentless pursuit of personal wealth; it is also one of involvement in community affairs and leadership of a diverse range of business and community development organizations. In this role he opened up new avenues for self-employment, greater job opportunities and improvement in the quality of life for countless numbers of Afro-Caribbean people. The most striking example of Wade's civic-minded career was his leadership of the Stonebridge Housing Action Trust which today stands as one of the most successful community redevelopment projects in the entire UK. Written in an engaging and at times, amusing style, Wade is not shy in revealing intimate details of his personal life. A romantic at heart, he introduces readers to his three beautiful wives, Daphne, Rosalyn and Vasantha and writes about the joys of raising three children. The story of Wade's 'Adventures' provides an important lesson for young black entrepreneurs. IT teaches that success come from not who you are but from the ability to remain focused in pursuing objectives, and perseverance in complex times, while maintaining integrity and honesty in business practices and in our personal lives. Anthony Wade now enjoys a life of quiet retirement with Vasantha in Jamaica but still finds time for community involvement and his latest passion, writing.
