The Silk Dragon II by Arthur Sze Pdf

National Book Award–winner Arthur Sze presents a one-of-a-kind anthology that vividly traces Chinese poetry from its centuries-old lyrical traditions up to the present day. In The Silk Dragon II, National Book Award–winning poet Arthur Sze presents a sophisticated vision of the vitality, diversity, and power of the Chinese poetic tradition. Traveling over one and a half millennia, Sze guides readers through a luminous history of verse, from the contemplative insights of fifth century poet Tao Qian, through Tang dynasty poets such as Wang Wei and Du Fu, and into subsequent centuries in which lived such innovative artists as Li Qingzhao and Bada Shanren, among many others. Extending the work from the original 2001 volume, The Silk Dragon II then traces classical Chinese poetry’s eruption into the free verse of the modern and contemporary eras, introducing groundbreaking poems by the Chinese Modernist master Wen Yiduo, as well as those from major living poets such as Wang Jiaxin, Zhai Yongming, and Xi Chuan. Through this remarkable journey—deepened by Sze’s personal introduction—we see that the “impossible task” of translation is yet rich with encounter, as both long-lost voices and those still speaking enter the same conversation, with the same vivacity.

Raw Silk by Meena Alexander Pdf

Alexander's cross-cultural perspective and sense of global identity (gained from her childhood in India and the Sudan, and her adult life in New York City) infuses her poems. She writes about violence and civil strife, love, despair, and a hard-won hope in the midst of a post-September 11 world.

Dark Legs and Silk Kisses by Angela Jackson Pdf

Winner of the Carl Sandburg Award for Poetry Angela Jackson brings her remarkable linguistic and poetic gifts to the articulation of African-American experience. The recurrent motif of the spider, which she presents as both creator and predator, demonstrates her deliberate reshaping of myth in the context of contemporary human experience. Informed by African-American speech and poetic traditions, yet uniquely her own, these poems display Jackson's stylistic grace, her exuberance and vitality of spirit, and her emotional sensitivity and psychological insight.

The Silk the Moths Ignore by Bronwen Tate Pdf

The Silk the Moths Ignore animates the liminal, sometimes gothic, spaces of miscarriage, pregnancy, and early parenthood with exquisite defamiliarizing detail. Weaving together prose versets, sonnets, and short poems with titles like "Against Choking" and "To Acknowledge Damage," the collection sings, bleeds, and casts spells to "carry hope like a weight." As evidenced by the reception to Michelle Obama's Becoming, as well as recent writing by Chrissy Teigen and Meghan Markle, The Silk the Moths Ignore arrives at a moment when people finally seem willing to discuss miscarriage with an openness that has previously been taboo. Tate brings a fresh and embodied language of grief and song to a conversation still beset with platitude and euphemism. For the many people who have experienced loss, this book offers the peculiar comfort of an alien yet instantly recognizable landscape.

Washing Silk by Robin D.S. Yates Pdf

Wei Chuang was a prolific Tang dynasty poet. He not only wrote in the shih form (poems in the old and new styles, the latter having strict rules of meter, rhyme, and euphony), but also was one of two literati founders of the tz’u (lyric) tradition, based on a popular song form. This tripartite study provides a thoroughgoing picture of his life and work. The book begins with the first detailed biography of Wei Chuang in a Western language, drawn both from historical sources and Wei’s poetry. The shih poems are intensely autobiographical and provide insight into Wei’s own experience and into the situation in China at the end of the ninth century. A second section analyzes the poetry, demonstrating that Wei’s tz’u cannot be understood without reference to his shih compositions, a new approach to the totality of Wei’s work. Finally, this volume presents translations, briefly annotated, of 110 shih poems, including his major narrative poem, The Lament of the Lady of Chin, and almost all the tz’u attributed to him, constituting more than a third of Wei Chuang’s extant poetry. The translations, while hewing close in meaning to their Chinese originals, have considerable value as poems in English. This work offers information that is useful to those interested in the literature, history, and general culture of medieval China. The translations bring to modern readers of English poetry the pleasures of becoming acquainted with a complex and innovative voice from the Chinese past.

Feel Free by Nick Laird Pdf

Celebrated for his novels and screenplays, Nick Laird has been 'an assured and brilliant voice' (Colm Toibin) in contemporary poetry ever since his impressive debut, To a Fault, in 2005. This is his strongest collection to date, in which we sense the deep American influence from living in New York meeting his familial shores of Northern Ireland: the acoustically generous, longer lines of the new world's Ginsberg or Whitman, and the lyricism of his forebears Heaney, MacNeice and Yeats. These are smart, energetic, worldly poems of political edge and family tenderness.

The Collected Poems of Robert Penn Warren by Robert Penn Warren Pdf

Winner of the C. Hugh Holman Award A central figure in twentieth-century American literature, Robert Penn Warren (1905–1989) was appointed by the Library of Congress as the first Poet Laureate of the United States in 1985. Although better known for his fiction, especially his novel All the King’s Men, it is mainly his poetry—spanning sixty years, fifteen volumes of verse, and a wide range of styles—that reveals Warren to be one of America’s foremost men of letters. In this indispensable volume, John Burt, Warren’s literary executor, has assembled every poem Warren ever published (with the exception of Brother to Dragons), including the many poems he published in The Fugitive and other magazines, as well as those that appeared in his small press works and broadsides. Burt has also exhaustively collated all of the published versions of Warren’s poems—which, in some cases, appeared as many as six different times with substantive revisions in every line—as well as his typescripts and proofs. And since Warren never seemed to reread any of his books without a pencil in his hand, Burt has referred to Warren’s personal library copies. This comprehensive edition also contains textual notes, lists of emendations, and explanatory notes. Warren was born and raised in Guthrie, Kentucky, where southern agrarian values and a predilection for storytelling were ingrained in him as a young boy. By 1925, when he graduated from Vanderbilt University, he was already the most promising of that exceptional set of poets and intellectuals known as the Fugitives. Warren devoted most of the 1940s and 1950s to writing prose and literary criticism, but from the late 1950s he composed primarily poetry, with each successive volume of verse that he penned demonstrating his rigorous and growing commitment to that genre. The mature visionary power and technical virtuosity of his work in the 1970s and early 1980s emanated from his strongly held belief that “only insofar as the work [of art] establishes and expresses a self can it engage us.” Many of Warren’s later poems, which he deemed “some of my best,” rejoice in the possibilities of old age and the poet’s ability for “continually expanding in a vital process of definition, affirmation, revision, and growth, a process that is the image, we may say, of the life process.”

Wild Geese Returning by Mich?le M?tail Pdf

The genre of poems that may be read both forward and backward, producing different creations was known as the "flight of wild geese." These poems were often sent so that a distant lover, like the migrating birds, would return. Its greatest practitioner, and the focus of this critical anthology, is Su Hui, a woman who, in the 4th Century, embroidered a silk for her distant husband using a grid of 840 characters that created perhaps 12,000 ways to read this poem. With examples from the 3rd to the 19th centuries, Michele Metail describes reversible poems as "a singular adventure at the edge of meaning, of language, and of writing."

The Atheist Wore Goat Silk by Anna Journey Pdf

In her third collection of poems, The Atheist Wore Goat Silk, Anna Journey once again celebrates the profusion of sensuality erupting from the material world. As she weaves dark fables, luminous family memories, and hard-edged personal tales into a singular fabric, Journey charts the boundaries of absence and departure, delineating the separations that we often hope to stitch back together at the intersections of the body and the imagination. Rhythmically charged and lyrically narrative, these poems are rich with verbal cascades and currents of mordant reflections. Throughout this collection, both readers and the poet are linked by a delicate and elegantly spun web of verse.
