The Bonanza Trail by Muriel Sibell Wolle Pdf

This classic account of Old West mining camps and gold-hunting prospectors is “a successful digging of a rich historical vein . . . phenomenal” (The New York Times). This colorful blend of history, reference, and travelogue brings to life the frenzied search for precious metals in nineteenth-century America through a tour of mining camps and former boomtowns, many now abandoned. It reveals the unbelievable privations men endured in the high Sierra and the Rockies and in crossing the desert wastes of Arizona, Utah and Nevada; the mines first discovered in New Mexico by Coronado and his men four centuries ago; and the first great rush that hit California in 1849. She follows the miners who poured in successive waves into the golden gulches of Oregon, Washington and Idaho, climbed to the deeper mines high in the mountains of Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, and dared at last to penetrate the hostile Black Hills of South Dakota. In personally following the trails of the pioneering prospectors, Wolle stumbles upon mute evidence of past bloodshed, lust, and struggle, and recreates the excitement of the period. A gifted artist, she also includes maps and “more than a hundred poignant sketches conveying the loneliness, melancholy and crumbling dryness of ghost cities which throbbed once with the hopes of many people” (The New York Times). “The fascinating and definitive book on the ghost and near-ghost towns of the Old West.” —Lucius Beebe, The Territorial Enterprise “Good popular history and [a] useful reference work.” —Library Journal

Spain and Portugal in the New World, 1492-1700 by Lyle N. McAlister Pdf

Spanish and Portuguese expansion substantially altered the social, political, and economic contours of the modern world. In his book, Lyle McAlister provides a narrative and interpretive history of the exploration and settlement of the Americas by Spain and Portugal. McAlister divides this period (and the book) into three parts. First, he describes the formation of Old World societies with particular attention to those features that influenced the directions and forms of overseas expansion. Second, he traces the dynamic processes of conquest and colonization that between 1492 and about 1570 firmly established Spanish and Portuguese dominion in the New World. The third part deals with colonial growth and consolidation down to about 1700. McAlister's main themes are: the post-conquest territorial expansion that established the limits of what later came to be called Latin America, the emergence of distinctively Spanish and Portuguese American societies and economies, the formation of systems of imperial control and exploitation, and the ways in which conflicts between imperial and American interests were reconciled. This comprehensive history, with its extensive bibliographic essay and attention to historiographic issues, will be a standard reference for students and scholars of the period.

The Pursuit and Capture of Hidden Treasure by Paul L. Jones Pdf

After three years in the U.S. Army, Paul Jones acquired a B.S. in Mining Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. His fifty year career was devoted to mine exploration and the management of producing mines and mills with two million miles of travel in the U.S. and a dozen foreign countries. At two New Mexico uranium mines, his management yielded the highest productivity in the district. In Honduras, he regained control of a collapsing silver mine that killed the former manager. In Nicaragua, he reopened a gold mine that defied the efforts of former managers. However, he barely escaped armed men chasing him and the gold. During a period of intense violence in El Salvador, he maintained the security of explosives and shipments of a million dollars gold per month. A Registered Professional Geologist, he developed and sold on six continents an exploration tool that detected many new mines including a multi-billion dollar deposit that generated a major portion of the tax revenues for Jefferson County, Montana for twenty years.
