Singapore 2065 by Euston Quah Pdf

As Singapore enters its 50th year of independence, it is a time for introspection to look back at the successes and challenges of the past, but is also a crucial time to consider what the future holds for the nation. Singapore 2065: Leading Insights on Economy and Environment from 50 Singapore Icons and Beyond is one such key contribution to the endeavour of thinking about what lies ahead. While many forthcoming projects and books take a more retrospective approach reflecting upon Singapore's past, this book adopts a forward-looking perspective, contemplating Singapore's distant future, which is important for posterity. This book is a collection of key insights from 50 iconic individuals of Singapore and beyond, and contains reasoned arguments, speculations and visionary expectations of Singapore's future in 50 years' time. The book discusses the distant future of Singapore's economy and the environment. What will Singapore's economic and environment landscape be like 50 years from now? Are there trends or scenarios common to the various discussions contained in this book? If there are, how big would be the impact of some of these trends? What and how should the government respond to these projections, expectations and informed visions of tomorrow? In sum, what would Singapore's economy and environment be like in 2065? The book explores a range of possible answers to these questions and more. Not only will the generations of today be able to gain much insight into Singapore's future by reading this book, but future generations, specifically 100 years after Singapore's independence, will be able to understand and affirm what and how today's generations think about their time. The book is a key contribution to envisioning Singapore's future, which is also vital for understanding what shapes Singapore's landscape today. Contents: --> Readership: Educational institutions of higher levels; research institutions; various professional societies; the Singapore government and ministries; foreign governments; and general readers who are interested in finding out more about what leaders in Singapore envision for Singapore's future. This volume also celebrates the country's exceptional success, retelling the invaluable stories and anecdotes that have paved Singapore's tremendous journey over the last 50 years. As Singapore continues to chart into the next half century, Singapore 2065 leaves plenty to ponder and will remain a valuable repository of knowledge for many years to come." Bertil Andersson President Nanyang Technological University "Singapore 2065 has brought together a diverse and intriguing range of ideas and insights from a rich cross-section of contributors: policy makers, researchers, close observers of Singapore, student leaders, and others. These essays reflect on Singapore's remarkable progress and development over the past half-century, and explore the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Over the next 50 years, the world will continue to be an uncertain place, offering exciting opportunities, but subject to bouts of deep uncertainty and disruptive events and trends. Ultimately, Singapore's continued success over the next 50 years will depend less on our material resources, but on our people, and specifically our key attributes of nimbleness, adaptability, creativity, resilience and the willingness to strive for a common purpose." Tan Chorh Chuan President National University of Singapore "Singapore's success came in large part from its continuous efforts to anticipate what changes are likely, not often looking as far as ahead as 50 years ahead, but certainly not afraid to try. Here are 50 minds stretching forward into the 21st century — confirming that the city-state's spirit lives on. I am confident that our environment will have a better future thanks to the projections in this volume. Everyone who cares should read and think about them." Wang Gungwu Chairman East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore "There are few issues that are more important than the economy and the environment in the 21st century for any country. They are especially important to Singapore, given its size and open economy. As the nation celebrates its 50th birthday, justifiably proud of its achievement, it is also timely to contemplate what the future might hold and what we need to do to ensure continued success as a nation. In Singapore 2065, you will find food for thought. What is of particular interest is that the deeply thoughtful essays collected in this volume crisscross at different points, and also raise a number of fundamental issues concerning value and identity that are inextricably tied to Singapore's future development. This book certainly provides keen insight into the economic and environmental challenges we face, but it also compels us to reflect on the larger story of "Majulah Singapura" as we march into the future." Singapore by Kent E. Calder Pdf

How Singapore’s solutions to common problems can provide examples for other societies. Nearly everyone knows that Singapore has one of the most efficient governments and competitive, advanced economies in the world. But can this unique city–state of some 5.5 million residents also serve as a model for other advanced economies as well as for the emerging world? Respected East Asia expert Kent Calder provides clear answers to this intriguing question in his new, groundbreaking book that looks at how Singapore’s government has harnessed information technology, data, and a focus on innovative, adaptive governance to become a model smart city, smart state. Calder describes Singapore as a laboratory for solutions to problems experienced by urban societies around the world. In particular, he shows how Singapore has dealt successfully with education, energy, environmental, housing, and transportation challenges; many of its solutions can be adapted in a wide range of other societies. Calder also explains how Singapore offers lessons for how countries can adapt their economies to the contemporary demands of global commerce. Singapore consistently ranks at the top in world surveys measuring competitiveness, ease of doing business, protection of intellectual property, and absence of corruption. The book offers concrete insights and a lucid appreciation of how Singapore's answers to near-universal problems can have a much broader relevance, even in very different societies.

Private Education In Singapore: Contemporary Issues And Challenges by Sam Choon-yin Pdf

Not much has been written about the private education sector in Singapore despite the fact that the sector houses about 300 private education institutions (PEIs) and enrolls about 150,000 students. Private Education in Singapore: Contemporary Issues and Challenges is an exciting book that aims to fill a gap in the literature. In the book, the author offers an extensive discussion on (i) the key elements of the sector — types and features of the PEIs, (ii) the regulatory framework for private education, (iii) students' aspiration and the impact of the ASPIRE report on PEIs, and (iv) the provision of external degree programme through transnational partnership. The book also tackles the hotly debated discussion in relation to academic quality and standard of PEI courses. The author identifies the reasons — some of them have more characteristics of a myth — and suggests a number of ways to overcome the issues and challenges.

Singapore Malay/Muslim Community, 1819-2015 by Hussin Mutalib,Rokiah Mentol,Sundusia Rosdi Pdf

Singapore’s Malay (Muslim) community, constituting about 15 per cent of the total population and constitutionally enshrined as the indigenous people of Singapore, have had its fair share of progress and problems in the history of this country. While different aspects of the vicissitudes of life of the community have been written over the years, there has not been a singularly substantive published compendium specifically about the community – in the form of a Bibliography – available. This academic initiative fills this obvious literature gap. The scope and coverage of this Bibliography is manifestly comprehensive, encompassing the different sources of information (print or non-print) about the many facets of life of the Republic’s Malays/Muslims – such as education, economy, politics, culture, history, health, language, religion, arts, and more. The result is a Bibliography that is arguably the most expansive, if not exhaustive treasury collection about the community, ever available anywhere. Scholars and researchers in particular and the public in general should find this Bibliography a highly valuable, indispensable source of information about the rich and varied life of Singapore’s Malay/Muslim community, stretching a period of two centuries – from the time of Stamford Raffles in 1819 until today. The Editors – Hussin Mutalib, Ph.D. (a senior academic with the National University of Singapore), Rokiah Mentol, and Sundusia Rosdi (former senior librarians with Singapore’s National Library Board) – are assisted by professional and experienced librarians.

The Sociotechnical Constitution of Resilience by Sulfikar Amir Pdf

This book considers the concept of resilience in a global society where coping with the consequence and long term impact of crisis and disaster challenges the capacity of communities to bounce back in the event of severe disruption. Catastrophic events such as the 9.11 terrorist attack, the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and the volcano eruption in Central Java entailed massive devastation on physical infrastructures, and caused significant social and economic damage. This book considers how the modern sociotechnological system facilitating human activity defines how societies survive and whether a crisis will be short-lived or prolonged. Drawing on the concept of sociotechnical resilience, this book closely examines a range of events North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. By presenting the successes and failures of sociotechnical resilience, it offers important insights and practical lessons to build better and comprehensive understandings of resilience in a real-world setting, significantly contributing to the study of disaster resilience.

Corpora, Constructions, New Englishes by Samantha Laporte Pdf

This book takes an integrated approach to the fields of Corpus Linguistics, Construction Grammar, and World Englishes through a thorough constructional and corpus-based examination of the patterning of the versatile high-frequency verb make in British English and New Englishes. It contributes to Construction Grammar theory by adopting a verb-based, rather than construction-based, perspective on argument structure. This allows the probing of the interface between verb-independent generalizations and item-specificity from an underexplored angle that offers new insights into the shape of the constructicon. From a variationist perspective, it seeks to (i) identify features of New Englishes and gauge whether these features exhibit traces of conventionalization, and (ii) assess whether the degree of institutionalization of the New Englishes correlates with linguistic behavior, both from a social and cognitive perspective, thereby contributing to the budding effort to integrate the cognitive and social dimensions into the modeling of linguistic variation in World Englishes.
