Excerpt from Sir Edward Burne-Jones: A Record and Review Shown for the previous editions of the work, the publishers are pleased to issue it again at a price which it is hoped will bring it within the reach of many who have not hitherto been able to obtain it. For the present edition the letterpress has been carefully revised by the author so as to bring the information up to the present date. The illustra tions are the same as in the previous editions, except that it has been found necessary, on account of size, to omit eight blocks, viz. One pic ture, four windows, and three chalk studies, none of which, however, could be considered of first impor tance. The Life of William Morris, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by J. W. Mackail Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of William Morris, Vol. 1 This biography was undertaken by me at the special request of Sir Edward burne-jones. I will not attempt to say how much it owes to his guidance and encourage ment, nor how much it has lost by their removal. When the task of writing the life of Morris was placed in my hands, his family and representatives gave me un reserved access to all the materials in their possession. To them, and more especially to his executors, Mr. F. 8. Ellis and Mr. S. C. Cockerell, I owe my best thanks for their friendly help. I am further indebted to Mr. Ellis for the index at the end of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Stained Glass as an Art (Classic Reprint) by Henry Holiday Pdf

Excerpt from Stained Glass as an Art In the first place I desire to express my sincere and cordial thanks to my friends Sir Edward Burne Jones and Mr. William Blake Richmond, for their courtesy in allowing me to reproduce some Of their designs, and thus to give specimens of the best work in stained glass of the nineteenth century. In the next place I must explain why the direct illustrations of my text are taken from my own work only. Considerations of convenience and of good taste determined me to take this course. I am quite convinced of a general accord between my brother artists and myself as to the main principles laid down in this treatise, but it is more than probable that we may differ on minor points; and I might find myself quoting some features in their designs in illustration of an argument of my own, with which they might not wholly agree, I might read some thing into their work which was not really in their Intention. On the other hand, there are some few matters about which we do not absolutely agree, and by employing my friends' designs in direct illustration of my principles, I might appear to be guilty of an inconsistency, unless I adopted the Objectionable alternative of calling attention to the points in question for the purpose of adverse criticism. British Contemporary Artists (Classic Reprint) by William Cosmo Monkhouse Pdf

Excerpt from British Contemporary Artists But though so different in many respects they are alike in one - their subject is mankind, and their works are all more or less rich in those human elements which are the very life of all great art, whether it be music or poetry or painting. Whether we look at those spiritual conceptions in which Watts has suggested the profoundest problems of human life, or wander in that romantic wonderland where the deli cate fancy of burne-jones lived and revelled; whether we visit with alma-tadema a Roman villa in the days of the Caesars, or, with Orchardson, a Salon in Paris in those of Louis XVI; whether we drink the classic air with Leighton or the very breath of daily life with Millais, we are never far from our kind - its beauty or its char acter, its hopes or its fears. The sights of its eyes or the dreams of its imagination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Five Great Painters, of the Victorian Era, Leighton, Millais, Burne-Jones, Watts, Holman Hunt It seems fitting then that a few words should be said by way of preface about the Society itself. For, if Leighton, and Millais, and burne-jones, and Watts, and Holman Hunt are representatives of the Victorian age, so also is the Royal Society of British Artists. If they are the ower of Art, it is the field where such owers grow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Art of William Morris by Aymer Vallance Pdf

Excerpt from The Art of William Morris: A Record Hough it was not my intention to write a preface, circumstances have made it necessary that I should do so. In the first place I wish it to be noticed that I chose purposely to call my book The Art of William Morris so as to show that it makes no claim to be a biography nor a record of any of his private and family affairs. Such a work I was neither asked nor authorized to write. It is true, of course, that I had the privilege of knowing the late Mr. Morris personally - from the year 1883 onwards until his death. At the same time I submit that, with two Or three very trifling exceptions, I have not introduced into the book any details of his life which were not already common property - which could not just as well have been strung together by any one who knew where to find the scattered references in Mr. Morris's own writings, and in various other publications, without ever having met Mr. Morris face to face; nor more than such as were necessary to link together the contents of the book in some sort of consecutive order. Religion in Recent Art by P. T. Forsyth Pdf

Excerpt from Religion in Recent Art: Being Expository Lectures on Rossetti, Burne Jones, Watts, Holman Hunt,& Wagner It may account for several features, and especially for the style, of the following pages if it be explained that, with the exception of the Sixth Lecture, they were written for a promiscuous audience, to whom they were also, in the simpler parts, spoken. The discourses on the painters arose out of a desire much less ambitious than publication, which was not originally contemplated. They may be regarded as residuary products of the unique Art Collection in the late Manchester Exhibition. And they sprang from a desire to lend some help for the opportunity to those whom it was the writer's business to teach in spiritual things, and who were much more likely to be grateful for fragments of assistance than critical of blunders on which the clergy of art might be severe. They were lay sermons. During the Exhibition there was no dearth of admirable technical criticism - especially in the brilliant columns of the Manchester Guardian. Edward Burne-Jones, Victorian Artist-dreamer by Stephen Wildman,Edward Coley Burne-Jones,John Christian,Alan Crawford,Laurence Des Cars,Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.),Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery,Musée d'Orsay Pdf

This publication is issued in conjunction with the 1998 exhibition of the same name held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and scheduled for venues in England and France. Burnes-Jones (1833-1898) created a style that had widespread influence on both British and European art--a narrative style derived from medieval legend and fused with the influence of Italian Renaissance masters, a style that ceded popularity to a growing taste for abstraction at the end of the 19th century. Now Burne-Jones's star has risen again, and this catalogue contains full discussion of his life and work and representation of his prodigious output of drawings and paintings. 9.5x12.5"Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

A Private Passion by Stephan Wolohojian,Anna Tahinci Pdf

"For the Winthrop collection's international debut exhibition, curators at the Fogg Art Museum of the Harvard University Art Museums, headed by Stephan Wolohojian, organized the selection and invited more than sixty specialists to write on artworks in their particular area of expertise. Works include such highlights in their creator's oeuvre as Jacques-Louis David's sketchbooks for The Coronation of Napoleon and the Crowning of Josephine, Theodore Gericault's Mutiny on the Raft of the Medusa, Vincent van Gogh's The Blue Cart, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's Odalisque with the Slave, William Blake's illustrations for the Divine Comedy, Dante Gabriel Rosetti's Blessed Damozel, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler's Nocturne in Blue and Silver. In addition, an essay by Wolohojian provides a fascinating and informative description of Winthrop and the growth of his collection."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
