Six Years With the Texas Rangers by James B. Gillett Pdf

Excerpt from Six Years With the Texas Rangers: 1875 to 1881 To write a true and complete history of the Texas Rangers as a state organization would require much time and an able historian. I am not a historian and could not undertake such an exhaustive treatise, which would fill several volumes the size of this, and it is only at the earnest solicitation of my chil dren, frontier friends, and old comrades that I have undertaken to write a short history of the rangers during the years I served with them. This little volume, then, has only the modest aim of pictur ing the life of the Texas Rangers during the years 1875-1881. I cannot, at this late date, recount in detail all the scouts that were made while I was in the service. I have, therefore, confined myself principally to the description of those in which I was a participant. Naturally, I remember those the best. Six Years With the Texas Rangers by James B. Gillett Pdf

It has been said that truth never makes very interest ing reading. Of the accuracy of this dictum I leave my readers to judge, for I have told my story just as I remember it, to the best of my ability and without any effort to embroider it with imagination. If I can inter est any of my old ranger comrades or even one little boy who likes to read about a real frontier, I shall feel amply repaid for all the labor and expense involved in preparing this work.

Rangers and Outlaws by James B. Gillettt,Sam Bass Pdf

Texas Rangers, Hostile Indians and Frontier Badmen in the wild South-West James Gillett was born in Austin, Texas and made his living as a cowboy before joining the Texas Rangers in Company D, assigned to the notorious West Texas borderlands. This was untamed country and besides dealing with outlaws, the rangers had numerous fights with hostile Indian tribes of the South-West including the Kiowa, Apaches and the Comanches. Gillett was involved in putting down the Mason County War and Horrell-Higgins Feud. In 1878, he was also involved in hunting for and the eventual killing of the Train Robber, Sam Bass, one of the infamous badmen of the Old West. There are adventures in quantity within the pages of this excellent book as Gillett recalls the pursuit of hostile Apaches who had attacked a stagecoach, how he killed outlaw Dick Dublin in a gunfight, became an El Paso deputy- marshal with gunfighter Dallas Stoudenmire and more. Since Sam Bass was a significant incident in James Gillett's long career as a ranger, an account of his career is also included in this unique Leonaur edition. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

The Texas Rangers by Mike Cox Pdf

Texas writer/historian Mike Cox explores the inception and rise of the famed Texas Rangers. Starting in 1821 with just a handful of men, the Rangers' first purpose was to keep settlers safe from the feared and gruesome Karankawa Indians, a cannibalistic tribe that wandered the Texas territory. As the influx of settlers grew, the attacks increased and it became clear that a much larger, better trained force was necessary. From their tumultuous beginning to their decades of fighting outlaws, Comanche, Mexican soldados and banditos, as well as Union soldiers, the Texas Rangers became one of the fiercest law enforcement groups in America. In a land as spread-out and sparsely populated as the west itself, the Rangers had unique law-enforcement responsibilities and challenges. The story of the Texas Rangers is as controversial as it is heroic. Often accused of vigilante-style racism and murder, they enforced the law with a heavy hand. But above all they were perhaps the defining force for the stabilization and the creation of Texas. From Stephen Austin in the early days through the Civil War, the first eighty years of the Texas Rangers is nothing less then phenomenal, and the efforts put forth in those days set the foundation for the Texas Rangers that keep Texas safe today. Firearms of the Texas Rangers by Doug Dukes Pdf

From their founding in the 1820s up to the modern age, the Texas Rangers have shown the ability to adapt and survive. Part of that survival depended on their use of firearms. The evolving technology of these weapons often determined the effectiveness of these early day Rangers. John Coffee “Jack” Hays and Samuel Walker would leave their mark on the Rangers by incorporating new technology which allowed them to alter tactics when confronting their adversaries. The Frontier Battalion was created at about the same time as the Colt Peacemaker and the Winchester 73—these were the guns that “won the West.” Firearms of the Texas Rangers, with more than 180 photographs, tells the history of the Texas Rangers primarily through the use of their firearms. Author Doug Dukes narrates famous episodes in Ranger history, including Jack Hays and the Paterson, the Walker Colt, the McCulloch Colt Revolver (smuggled through the Union blockade during the Civil War), and the Frontier Battalion and their use of the Colt Peacemaker and Winchester and Sharps carbines. Readers will delight in learning of Frank Hamer’s marksmanship with his Colt Single Action Army and his Remington, along with Captain J.W. McCormick and his two .45 Colt pistols, complete with photos. Whether it was a Ranger in 1844 with his Paterson on patrol for Indians north of San Antonio, or a Ranger in 2016 with his LaRue 7.62 rifle working the Rio Grande looking for smugglers and terrorists, the technology may have changed, but the gritty job of the Rangers has not.
