Korean Art from the 19th Century to the Present by Charlotte Horlyck Pdf

Walk the galleries of any major contemporary art museum and you are sure to see a work by a Korean artist. Interest in modern and contemporary art from South—as well as North—Korea has grown in recent decades, and museums and individual collectors have been eager to tap into this rising market. But few books have helped us understand Korean art and its significance in the art world, and even fewer have told the story of the formation of Korea’s contemporary cultural scene and the role artists have played in it. This richly illustrated history tackles these issues, exploring Korean art from the late-nineteenth century to the present day—a period that has seen enormous political, social, and economic change. Charlotte Horlyck covers the critical and revolutionary period that stretches from Korean artists’ first encounters with oil paintings in the late nineteenth century to the varied and vibrant creative outputs of the twenty-first. She explores artists’ interpretations of new and traditional art forms ranging from oil and ink paintings to video art, multi-media installations, ready-mades, and performance art, showing how artists at every turn have questioned the role of art and artists within society. Opening up this fascinating world to general audiences, this book will appeal to anyone wanting to explore this rich and fascinating era in Korea’s cultural history.

Seoul's Historic Walks in Sketches by Janghee Lee Pdf

Seoul is a rapidly changing city, the epitome of the latest trends and technology. But looking closely in between the skyscrapers, there lie hints that reveal an alternate story, a story of a 600-year-old capital city. Seoul’s Historic Walks in Sketches discovers and brings to life these stories. From the Joseon era’s palaces and fortresses to modern skyscrapers of glass and steel built on historic sites, the author’s pencil sketches bring forth a new dimension of Seoul. Accompanying the illustrations are his insightful, witty commentaries on local history that go a long way in presenting readers with a captivating view of the unknown city, a city almost exotic in its mystery. A city, its architecture and its history: 15 must-see attractions in old town Seoul Through the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910), Japanese colonial rule, the Korean War, industrialization, and democratization movements, countless stories of the changing times have been engraved in the nooks and crannies of Seoul. This book is a retrospect of the forgotten city of Hanyang (old Seoul), reviving the history once lived within the four ancient great gates. Many of the places covered in this book are among Seoul’s most famous landmarks and popular tourist attractions, yet the sagas unraveled at each destination impart an unconventional perspective. The author’s remarkably discerning eye notices and depicts the minute details most would miss around the city. For those unmoved by the textbook photographs and dry histories of existing guides to Seoul, this book’s intimate charm is sure to please. The ever-changing city of Seoul: Sites and stories unfamiliar even to locals It would be an understatement to say that this book is only dedicated to tracking down the historical traces of Seoul. As the author says, “Seoul isn’t an antique—it’s an ever-changing organism.” He discusses the recent changes that have proven significant to the city and introduces hidden attractions around the city, from an ecological park on a skyscraper rooftop to evidence of historical figures cleverly hidden in amongst the buildings. Seoul Historic Walks in Sketches contains extraordinary and unmatched insight into the city.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... VIII KOREA AND THE KOREANS According to the verdict of certain scientists our aborigines are supposed to have come from Korea. In the comparatively short time during which the Spanish kept records on our Pacific coast, over one hundred junks are said to have drifted across that ocean, along the Aleutian Islands and the Alaskan coast, in the track of the Japan current. This would indicate that considerable numbers of human beings may have so reached what are now our shores during the centuries that preceded the advent of the European. When in Washington with the Korean Legation in 1888, the then minister from Nicaragua expressed himself to me as much struck with the resemblance of the Koreans to the educated natives of his country. Certainly there is a strong resemblance between some of our native Indian tribes and the Koreans. A White Man's Land.--Korea has been aptly termed " A white man's land." Although it is a continuation of Siberia, extending down between the Yellow and the Japan Seas, it has a climate much the same as that of our northern central states, with more equable winters, and a regular rainy season during two of the summer months. The winters are one succession of bright sunny days with just enough gray days to relieve the monotony, and growing almost imperceptibly colder day by day until the great navigable river at the capital is frozen over so that the cart road is extended across the ice. The mornings are overcast until the sea breeze blows away the vapours towards noon. This gives to the country its name of the land of the morning calm. Products.--The great product of Korea is rice, which is the staple of diet. Next come beans, which are largely used as a food for man and beast, being mixed with rice in the human...
